When Anne said "And how can there be anything wrong with a life if it's spent with a person you love?" It gets me everytime 😭 It's just I don't know if I'll ever find a romantic partner in my life, but that line made me realize how I'm already loved abundantly and it is more than enough. As I've said before I have so much more love of life, because of the things I've realized through this show.

Also “Love doesn’t look the same for everyone.” I’m single by choice and have no desire for a romantic relationship with anyone and that line resonates with me.

This episode has to be one of my favourites. I can't believe we got a queer pride party in a show based in the 19th century, and yet some other shows based in the 21st century can't even show basic representation... mind boggling, but also this show is just overall fantastic
@peterlewis2178 Жыл бұрын
Just to play devil's advocate, not every story needs to have queer representation. There are plenty of places and stories that the representation isn't there or isn't evident in real life, and imo forcing it in inorganically purely for the representation isn't the greatest move. Of course, I'm not saying that representation is bad. It's amazing, and we absolutely need more. I'm also not implying that it was forced into this show. I actually love what they did with this show and how they entwined social issues into it. I'm just saying that it's not as black and white as no representation = bad.
@shorkelili Жыл бұрын
@peterlewis2178 oh I completely agree with you, I don't think representation should be forced either when the show or film has nothing to do with that etc. I probably should've worded my comment better. What I meant by shows not being able to show basic representation, is that some shows actively exclude communities for no reason other than a behind-the-scenes issue where the crew/staff has some prejudices. And then in some shows that do include representation, its done very awkwardly and in an uncomfortable manner - like some shows will have a gay character and make it their only character trait.

Coles journey throughout the show is just honestly one of the best in my opinion, it’s great to see him discovering who he is during the show!

Thie episode will always be my favourite. There's something about a show set in the 19th century having such a hopeful outlook on queer life and love that shocked me to my core when I first watched it. In any other show, queer characters in this time period would face nothing but isolation and misery (and yes, I know that often is realistic) but sometimes it's just nice to hear them say 'yes it will be difficult, but it's so worth it anyway.' Even thinking about the scene between Cole and Josephine brings tears to my eyes.

Queer people have existed all throughout history so it was refreshing to see queer people portrayed in a historical show where things were hopeful, for sure.
@shorkelili Жыл бұрын
queer people have always existed, mostly in seclusion to protect themselves - but, there have also been very open parties like this and gatherings in history. I loved that about this episode. It shows that the queer community was alive and thriving back then too, even if the general public wasn't aware of it. There's no doubt stuff like this happened in the 19th century and before too. Y'know, Historians would call Josephine and Gertrude roommates

In the books, Marilla and John Blythe never got together because they got into an argument and her pride got in the way, so she never apologized. It's interesting what they did in the show since Michael is an original character. Michael's passing meant Marilla had to take care of Matthew and she couldn't leave him to be with John.

I love the costume designs in this ep and the set piece of Aunt Jo’s ballroom! It is so colorful and whimsical and daring. Everything feels so rich and real, like I’m not just watching a show. One of the reasons I love this series because it captures the atmosphere and wraps me up in it. Very excited for the next ep because there is a specific scene/direction that really hits 🤌🏻

Hey guys! I wanted to let you know that there's an episode of the great british baking show (holiday edition, s3 e1) where the cast of derry girls compete! Its absolutely hilarious and I think you would really like to see them out of character as sort of a final send off. I remember that one of you mentioned once that youve binged tgbbs before, so you may have seen it, but if you haven't, I very much recommend it. I laughed so hard I almost cried.

In the future you should mention what your spoiler is for. I assumed it was a spoiler for the show, not the books, and so I got spoiled. I usually just say something like "Spoiler for season/episode X", "Spoiler for Y book", etc.

To be fair, Diana's parents aren't excessively old fashioned for the time. Homosexuality you remember was in no way openly accepted in society. If the Barrys were completely open about the fact of their sister being a lesbian they would have been extraordinarily progressive. They probably don't even know, if they had they wouldn't have allowed her to come to Josephine's house. In fact, it's a bit of a plot hole to think that she'd come out to Diana and Anne and risk them talking about it.
@colonyofrats4193 Жыл бұрын
It’s not really a plot hole there’s always been people and small groups and in some cultures throughout history that accepted or at least tolerated it. Even if it was and in places still is “taboo”. Humans being have always done what they want regardless. I’m not denying all the hardships but there have always been safe places. Even small. Especially in the arts. Anne figured it out on her own and she probably had high hopes on Diana thinking for her self. Besides she’s very old not a lot could really happen now

I think they know but pretend not to know. like parents usually do about their gay children(I think parents almost always know their kid is diferent, but they prentend not notice, so they dont have to deal with it)

@@colonyofrats4193 Sure. People found below the radar ways to connect. But Josephine has no reason to believe that her 12 or 13 year old small town niece is going to be part of that safe space or that she won't tell everyone.
@moonlily1 Жыл бұрын
@@tsunamikent I think if they strongly suspected it they wouldn't let Diana go. If you remember they're very proper and wouldn't have even let Diana be friends with Anne if she hadn't saved Minnie Mae. Marilla probably wouldn't have even let Anne go if she knew.

You guys knew abt Cole being gay this whole time?? Well good for y'all but I can't take it, do you guys also know that the teacher Mr Phillips has severe internalized homophobia? It's the reason he often singles out and mocks Cole who seems to be more secure in his own sexuality
