Kevin, one of my favorite part of your death metal videos is how clear and crisp the production is. I love brutal, old-school death metal but I can't pretend that the muddy production doesn't irritate me occasionally.

@@KevinHeiderich i shouldve chosen a better word, what i tried to convey with "no-bullshit" was that your technique does not contain any waste of movement and is on point, every movement serves a purpose. therefore a "bullshit" technique would be a one with lots of excess, unnecessary movement and flair, wasting energy!

Bro.. what did you use for the tones... oh my god... PERFECTION!
@KevinHeiderich11 ай бұрын
Jo dude, thanks!!! :) So, in both cases, this Winds of Creation video and the Day69 video from Alex Rüdinger, I used my Axe Fx II and dialed in tones specifically for those songs. I recently started experimenting with the tone match block. But instead of fully matching a record I only use it to a certain amount. Basically like a blend EQ, to get more presence and a more hifi-tone, as well as getting some of the characteristics of that tone I matched. For Winds of Creation I matched the same album but only blended it in 50%, and then changed some amp settings after I matched the tone. So technically it's not an accurate tone match anymore. Imagine the tone match as a global EQ that I dial my tone into. Amp-wise it's pretty simple, just an T808 into an Atomica High. Really love that amp in the axe fx. For Day69 it was the same approach but a different amp. So the Atomica has this weird thing, that if you hit hard, then it sort of sounds like some of the DI comes through. You get this spongy kind of tone, which I usually like. I didn't for Day69 so I just used one of those 5150 amp models. My tone match reference was actually the song "Homo Sum" in that case which is not even from the same album. Another thing to keep in mind for Day69. Since I didn't have to play it one take and basically had unlimited takes (unlike this video for example) I was able to really sculpt every part of the song the way I wanted, playing-wise. I really love that process and that's one of the reasons I wanted to work with Alex. So most of the tone comes from hitting hard and being tight. All tremolo picking is actual 16th notes and almost perfectly on grid. Instead of quantizing I just recorded as many takes as I had to, in order to be as close to the grid as possible. Some manual nudging here and there and that's it. The palm muting in the opening is also a super choked kind of palm muting which is not my regular way of doing it. (Hand is closer to the pickups, away from the bridge, and I also dug in super hard in that tremolo picking). That's it for the most part I think :)

I wanna hurl all my money at that where did you get it? :O I can't find it on their store Also you crushed this but you always crush it at these covers :) And holy shit you got such a good/accurate tone for this.

They have a compilation tab book and also a full album tab book of Nihility. Here's a link to the best of compilation with Winds of Creation: rebellionrepublic.com/products/decapitated-the-art-of-death-metal And thanks man! I started incorporating the tone match feature on my axe fx. But instead of just matching it 1:1 I use the tone match block as a blend eq and sculpt my tone with it. In this case, a 1:1 tone sounded a bit too thin and scooped for me, so I only used the tone match block for presence and an overall Decapitated-tone-feel mixed with my own tone :)
@jamespeterson1630 Жыл бұрын
@@KevinHeiderich Oh hell yeah bro thank you for that link! Very unfortunate that the title track is the only Winds song there and seems to be the only song they give a shit about playing live tho cos I think the whole album is a masterpiece as I said. Most people seem to prefer a different album which is ofc fine people are entitled to their opinion! That said Im glad to see some songs from Negation and Organic there tho as I think they're fucking great as well. And yeah dude you have a good ear for tone sounds great! By the way Kevin Im super stoked you're playing on Hannes's "Blottedy/Necroy" EP as Hannes is my favorite death metal composer :) (Like I said Winds is my fave if you don't count prog stuff and I think Hannes's compositions are very progressive) So stoked to hear you and his collaboration on that full recording! Would also love to hear you collaborate more with Hannes's solo stuff since I have good reason to believe Danny won't be his rhythm guitarist moving forward (that whole situation is super unfortunate and sad). I dunno if you and Hannes have talked about you continuing to do guitars for his solo work but you'd be the perfect guy to continue working with him just in my humble opinion at least as far as someone who's musically very well suited :) All the respect in the world man been loving what you've done on this channel for many moons since you did that Universe Momentum cover a decade ago! I've also been very keen on the possibility of you ever releasing any original compositions because I remember hearing your video titled "Riff #2" and being blown away cos I love stuff in that vein. Im sure since that video is just as old as the Universe Momentum cover perhaps you don't feel the same about your ideas from back then and I imagine you've evolved as a composer since then, but regardless if and when you release something you've written (or if you have already pls enlighten me!) Id be super down to buy it and support :) Even if it's different stylistically like Im pretty open (Like I was just listening to the band Kansas for almost 2 hours just now lol) Cheers!

@KevinHeiderich Жыл бұрын
Still the Axe Fx II. But I changed my workflow a bit. I started using the tone match feature, but in a weird backwards way haha. So first I make a tone that's close to the album, then I tone match it with a passage where only the guitar is playing in the original track (the intro in this one), and then with the tone match block in th chain, I go back and make some changes on the amp and drive block, so it's more to my liking and fits better in the mix. In this case, just tone matching it without a change afterwards, sounded thin and weak, and you couldn't make out what I play too well, because the tone was very close to the original. So yeah, that's it now haha

This album still has some of the very finest metal riffs to ever be recorded! Btw; what string gauges do you usually use for D standard and drop C?
@KevinHeiderich Жыл бұрын
11-56 for both. Tremolo is blocked on that guitar so I can back and forth between standard and dropped
@nj1255 Жыл бұрын
@@KevinHeiderich I've also gravitated towards heavier gauges for those tunings (I use 10-52 for everything from E standard to drop C), but I've had many people telling me lately that I use too heavy strings and that 10-46 should be enough for everything down to drop C. The problem I face when using 10-46 - even for E standard - is that all notes go sharp/out of tune when I'm picking. I pick somewhat hard, but not anywhere close to how hard some people pick, so I find it strange that others can use 10-46 without any issues. I like the feeling of lighter gauges, but it sounds horrible when all notes go sharp for a split second, (and there's also way more fret noise even with the guitars set up perfectly).
