Jamaica has Spanish names because our country was first colonized by Spain and then the British fought them with the help of the Maroons and won in 1667. Then Jamaica became a British colony.

Half Way Tree was originally known as Half-Way-Tree Pen. It was named after a cotton tree which was located at the junction of four roads and up to 1866 was half way between two places: Greenwich in St. Andrew Hill, where the English soldiers had their camp and the fort near Spanish Town.

These people who are doing these videos really need to take a little time to get some knowledge before exposing themselves like this. Spanish is not Jamaica's second, third, fourth or any language of Jamaica. It's so annoying to give my valid time watching these videos hoping to get something from them except it feels like a waste of time that I'll never get back. You KZbinrs, you've got an opportunity to share good and bad facts. Stop squandering the opportunity!! Please do even a little research before you do these postings.

Our school system needs to introduce some African history in the curriculum.. They also need to know who were the families that enslaved them and how those families lived on the island..

Half Way Tree from what I learnt was a mid-point rest stop in the early colonial years circa 1700s -1800s when there were not a lot of roads and people used to walk between uptown St. Andrew to downtown Kingston. It said that there was a tree in the vicinity of what is now Half Way Tree, that folks would rest under when tired from walking. There you have it: Half Way Tree.

Half Way Tree is the capital of the parish of Saint Andrew. It was formerly named Half Way Tree Pen when the parish was formerly named Liguanea meaning iguana or lizard. Now Ligunea is now a small area of Saint Andrew. Half Way Tree got its name from a large Cottonsilk Tree which was located where four roads meet near the Half Way Tree Parish Church. People travelling to kingston from east or west would stop at this halfway point for rest and refreshment at a nearby tavern.

There are not many Spanish speaking people in Jamaica. If anything English is the second language or patois (an English, African and other language derivative) depending on the class status). The Spanish names of places across Jamaica is due to the fact that they were the first colonizers before the British took over. You need a better “tour guide .”

@@lisalewis2650 I did French in school not Spanish. Also because Spanish or any another language is being taught in a school does not make it the second language of a country. Jermaine, that’s not the traditional way of the patty shape. Tastee,Mother’s and Juicy Beef does it the traditional way. And as for shopping, everything sells downtown, from a pin to an anchor sells down there, the thing is downtown is much cheaper than uptown and you’ll find more sophisticated stores and things uptown but it’s more pricey. @Karen-rp4gz8 ай бұрын
You sure your sister wasn't in a Spanish class at her middle school? We have primary, prep and high schools in Jamaica. If you were learning languages, then of course you would need to speak that in that lesson and sometimes when you entered the classroom, namely Spanish, French and German. Latin phased out in the early 80s.
