Actually Latin America is very diverse, but the american mass media represent us as if everybody were the same.

I think the government has some responsibility for that as well. A couple of years ago in Costa Rica there was a HUGE media campaign that completely excluded the black... Caribbean side of the country. Same thing happened here in Ecuador. I believe the campaign here centered around futbol w/ no mention or show of Afro-Ecuadorians (outside of the champions). It has to be intentional and it will never be if we....(people of color) don't raise our voices in unison. I notice that the Afros here love this country and want to be included.

@@TheYarbros Yeah, because colonial times the african american and native american roots were depreciated, so the people that descend from europeans have more political and economical power. Before Evo Morales, the indigenous people in Bolovia were very marginated and treated almost as slaves.

So they want to show these countries as mixed but standing out the european root. I expect that with the decline of european and anglosaxon countries and the arise of China and India this change, even so India is a very racist country too.

There's a catholic church on the Southside of Chicago named St. Sabina, where they celebrate African culture. Depending on the celebration, the processional is very similar to this. It's amazing how our (black) history is so similar, just in different languages and cultures. They are a proud people. I wish we could've, would've kept our traditions alive. I could see in Apryl's face that she wanted to volunteer right then and there; she genuinely wanted to help. I've been watching KZbinrs in Ecuador for at least two years now, and have never seen ANYTHING like this. Ecuador is about so much more than beaches, birds, fauna and food. Thank you for changing the narrative that we've been getting about Ecuador.

The ceremony was mesmerizing and deeply felt. We are such a spiritual ppl. Didn't understand the Spanish priest being there....it seemed a little odd to me but hey who am I. The pride, the cultural preservation and the ancestors emanating through their vibes, ours, cubanos, Caribbean.....all of the Afro cultures that we have had chance to engage with so many common factors. Loved it but hated the poverty of it all 🤨

I was thinking about St. Sabina too while watching and several other Black Catholic congregations in Chicago. I grew up with a set of identical twins who went on to become the first Black twins ordained in the Catholic church.

What traditions you wanted to keep alive? People create traditions. Old traditions dies, new ones are created as some evolve or die. Don't forget that Africans with African tradition captured and sold slaves to Europeans. So, if those traditions didn't help our people then, well we should let it go.

George Stallings is the founder of the Imani Temple African-American Catholic Congregation and was long active in the Black Catholic Movement. He served as a Catholic priest from 1974 to 1989, and was based in Washington, DC, for many years. He established the Imani Temple as an independent denomination in 1989, making a public break in 1990 with the Catholic Church on The Phil Donahue Show. The Archbishop of Washington excommunicated him that year.

This video really warmed my heart. I teared up seeing the indigenous folk come into the church to pay their respect to our people. That showed true love and community. The camaraderie of you all within the community was special. This will remain one of my very favorite videos that you have done. Please do more of that highlighting the cultural influences in the countries you visited, because in North America we are ignorant about our South American neighbors. I would like to know what other Languages did you heard spoken besides Spanish? From my reading, I understand there are many indigenous languages spoken as well! Please highlight that as well. Most of the African presentations, from the African continent to the conceptual West, are not driven by consciousness, by questioning values and standards, but appear to imitate Euro-Western standards of behaviour and acquisitive culture. OMG.....THISSSSSS...... Brought a tear to my eye. THIS is what we need to see more in these travel vlogs, more connections with locals. I've been fortunate to experience and see both sides.....from visiting my own family on my dad's side in Nigeria, and visiting these different countries with large diaspora populations. I love how those traditions have held together through slavery. It puts so much into perspective being a black person here in the US. And another thing; black sho does NOT crack-everyone looks 10-20 years younger than what they stated in the interviews!

Los blancos y mestizos decimos a nuestras parejas Mi Negro o Mi Negra, pero es con cariño, con amor. Decir Mi negro en Ecuador no es despectivo, es con estima hacia un amigo o a la pareja sentimental. La historia entre indígenas y afros en Ecuador y países de LATAM tienen una historia en común, los indigenas siempre se sublevaron ante la corona española por la esclavitud y abusos que recibían y los afros tomaron eso como ejm para revelarse, ambos grupos en muchas ocasiones se unían para rebelarse en contra de la corona a la cual se unieron mestizos y criollos. 👍

OMG! I'm so emotional. This video brought some tears to my eyes. Mi gente. Mis primos! Wherever we are on the globe, it's never too nice of a nice place, always some chaos, some darkness. They are the places they tell you not to go to and perhaps with some truth to it, but why? Hmmmmmm! When the indigenous people came in to make their offering, it was so heartfelt. Also, what a beautiful Mass! I am Catholic, and I love watching the African Masses in Nigeria online. Really special. Did you know that African Catholic communities have a special “papal permission” (or “dispensation”) to dance in the liturgy, as movement is such a part of their communication in worship. I love to watch, and pray with them online. A sad fact for the USA: after the civil War, during reconstruction, a bishop in the South was commissioned to help and catechize the black people, but he didn’t, because he was very racist. The Catholic Church in America might look very different today, if he had been faithful to his vows of obedience and God’s love. I never knew there were Afro-Ecuadorean Catholics! Que bonito!

He is an amazing Afro-Peruvian lay-Dominican saint of the late 16th, early 17th centuries, who is known for his incredible humility, kindness and spiritual gifts, like bi-location, similar to Padre Pio, and he fought with demons like him too. Just listen to the reverence & regard in the way Dona Solange’ family spoken. Her grandchildren’s word were dredged in respect! They addressed her as “La Senora Aida Solange.” In our vernacular, they put some respect on her name! Not a single person was casual or informal in the entire episode. Oh yes! Those encocados are to die for! Sadly, here in Ecuador we have many Afro-Ecuadorians who consider themselves "white" and don't acknowledge their African roots, just like many mestizos distance themselves from their indigenous roots. It's sad because younger generations don't know their roots. It brought tears to my eyes to see the beautiful church celebration with self-determination. I hope you get to visit other Afro-Ecuadorian communities, such as those in the El Chota valley. My sister-in-law's first cousin was the first Afro-Ecuadorian anchorwoman on Ecuadorian t.v.

Yes, we were had some conversations with some of the community organizers and it seems that therein lies the fight. Convincing people to identify as afro...if the true numbers were reported during the census resources could be allocated but that job is proving to be difficult.

I love it! It's always nice to see black people celebrating African heritage. We lack that in the US. We might be monetarily more wealthy, but culturally we are much poorer. The more money we have have or the more education we have, the more we want to live and be around Europeans or people of European decent. There is almost no celebration of African culture in the US. I kind of feel jealous, but not in a unhealthy way. I bet non of them are claiming to be Hebrew. Thanks for video. I really enjoyed it.

This was so beautiful. Thank you for bringing this part of life to us. You mentioned not being a part of Afro-Catholic traditions before. We outchea 😊. I grew up in a Black Catholic Church in Houston and recognized a lot of that ceremony- though the indigenous offering was new and brought me to tears, it was so beautiful. East Texas and Louisiana have decent sized Black Catholic congregations. When I last attended (like the late 90s) there were strong African themed services around Easter, Juneteenth, and during Kwanzaa at a minimum. Thank you again for sharing these stories and the history. That switch tho!!!! 😂

Only want to explain that in Ecuador a huge and free black community, developed in Esmeraldas in the 16 th and 17th century, a northern coastal province, after two shipwrecks occured near the coast and the afro people from the ships fleed by the dozens and formed our black province of Esmeraldas. Other black people from Colombia joined in this área and mixed with indigenous people. They were let by the spaniards, to own all that land and for centuries they were the lords of all this province and even TIL today. So, It is not completely true to say that black people of Ecuador dont have their own land. They do own a vast land in Esmeraldas and that has been allways respected, but their extreme independence from spanish colonial influence lead to a lack of formal education and that has been their main limitation, my point of view. Also in Guayaquil black people were part of the first inhabitants and they took charge of the ship construcción industry that developed in the city. Please read obout Alonso de Illescas, a black Hero of Ecuador. 1528-Provincia de Esmeraldas, c. 1600) was a free african founder and leader of the "cacicazgo Reino de los Zambos de Esmeraldas" and recognized héroe nacional ecuatoriano y considered as the máximum héroe of the afroecuadorian freedom.

Yes, they definitely have their own land in Esmeraldas. I believe what Tony was referencing were the hundreds of thousands of slaves who were freed and simply had nothing. No compensation, no land, no place that they knew of to go. Interestingly enough most of the black ppl we spoke to in Guayaquil came from or parents came from Esmeraldas.

Interesting story. I have a rather negative experience with Ecuador and the continental African community. I supported the aide and rescue of about 14 continental Africans from various African countries that were sort out and brought to Ecuador through an Ecuadorian government sponsored program to teach in their school system. There were a total of 200 Africans brought in for the program about 5 years ago and after 1 year, all individuals in the program were thrown out into the streets of Ecuador with no money and no work permits. One Ghana who I personally knew there contacted me about what happened and I put together a process to help as many as I could. So the 14 I assisted are now here with me in the US on the road to citizenship. So, it’s interesting to know we have Africans there as my recusees didn’t know nor had the support while they were beat up and sleeping on the streets with no help from the government nor locals.
