The thing that always gets me about this is that Sumito actually had the story behind the Venus painting correct, but thought he was wrong because of the name. Venus is just the Roman name for Aphrodite, and because Rennaisance Italians saw themselves as the descendents of Romans, they usually used the Roman names for all the Greek gods that everyone knows about. Also fun fact about Michaelangelo, 25 years after he painted the Sistine Chapel, the Pope made him come back and do a new painting on one of the walls, called The Last Judgement. This is the one that the "buff Jesus" they were talking about is on. Michaelangelo painted himself as the flayed skin that they pointed out too; a lot of modern scholars believe he painted himself this way as a way to repent of his sin. It's crazy just how detailed that painting really is.

he was almost correct except it wasn't Zeus it was his father Cronos who got castrated
@sterlingmuse5808 Жыл бұрын
@@angryorange6555 Oh, it was actually Ouranos, Cronus's father and Zeus's grandfather. Because Cronus castrated him first, and then later got castrated by his son Zeus as well. I forgot Sumito said Zeus there XD

The thing about art and why some become famous is honestly all over the place. The Mona Lisa actually was a pretty unknown painting for most of it's existence that changed when someone stole it. It was stolen because it wasn't the most famous painting and then people start covering it on the news, you suddenly have every country that knew of Michelangelo's work talking about the Mona Lisa and soon it started become how it was awful we ignored it and how good it was and after a couple years the guy who stole it I think gave it back or was found with it and it was basically treated like we stopped the most heinous act of terrorism ever committed because we got the Mona Lisa back. Hell look at Banksy the guy that does graffti art. He made a painting that sold at auction that self destructed on the auctions finish, it shredded the painting and the paintings price like tripled in that second because it got shredded. There is also the fact that artwork is used for illegal funds because its an object not a currency which is a whole other thing about why some art is valued over others.
@woaddragon Жыл бұрын
You are correct. The reasons why the Mona Lisa got famous is actual.a.complex.story. after all it originally started as a commission from an Italian merchant's wife portrait, that Leonardo did in his down time.

2:16 Marina Abramovic. She's the Serbian self-proclaimed “grandmother of performance art”. Her body of work is as much art as it is a decades-long game of suicidal truth or dare. You're not wrong about that sentence, either. A lot of performance art comes off as "What the Hell am I looking at?" I thought I heard of you're talking about, so I looked it up. It's *Rhythm Zero.* Nikki's description is actually spot on. It was 6 hours, and after all that? She just got up and walked towards the audience. They scattered, afraid to confront her.

The Wikipedia article actually didn't mention this stuff so that's probably why it wasn't on Internet Historian' video.

That "woman" in the Jesus-painting is probably John the Apostle during the Last Supper, the youngest of Jesus's followers. He was supposedly a very beautiful man. So not a woman.

Art is self expression. If the artist expresses themself through it, it is art, regardless of skill. This definition is a sliding scale. A painting is intended to express an emotion, a paintbrush does not (by itself) Some things just can't be explicitly defined
@-cj- Жыл бұрын
@@DeReAntiqua Really didn't think I'd hit your nerves that badly with this common definition. Most things are not subjectively art. A hammer may have been an expression of the artist who created it, but a machine cannot express itself when it is created. It can and cannot be art. Hence why I said it is a sliding scale.

Keep in mind, there IS such a thing as good art and bad art (or perhaps tasteful and distasteful art). But ultimately what defines art aint important. Just make something you enjoyed making and others can enjoy or appreciate. There once was a wax statue of a female cop taking a poop...yea, that's not something I want to see. I don't care if it's 'art'.
