"A Buffalo, New York, police officer who was videotaped calling a bystander an obscene, sexist term has been removed from his post for now.
Buffalo Police Department Commissioner Byron Lockwood suspended Lt. Michael Delong and launched an investigation, Mayor Byron Brown confirmed in a statement Monday.
“There is no place for that type of reprehensible conduct in the Buffalo Police Department and it will not be tolerated,” Brown said.
Ruweyda Salim, who filmed police stopping a man this week at a 7-Eleven, is seen on video confronting Delong about the amount of cops present to detain one man. Delong said the man had two crack pipes and attacked his mother. He told her that the suspect was violent and holding a weight in his hand."

I think a fair bit of his response was simply being angry she didn't show him deference, but she also overtly criticized him and his team for overpolicing, gaslit him about owning a car, and filmed him despite it clearly making him uncomfortable. Don't get me wrong, all of those actions are her legal rights and I would personally argue they were also morally justified, but I don't think we do anyone any good by suggesting her actions were based in respect. If anything I would argue the current state of policing warrants more disrespect, and I think this woman should be lauded for her civil disobedience.

@@RS-hc9xs I don't think so, see all of this became a hysteria, not that I am saying that the police shouldn't be made to answer, bullies and thugs don't belong in any kind of social services. Your leaders should have been handling this, they lack the respect of their citizens, the lack the respect of each other. Discussionss and teaching the police, instead would have been advisable nothing happened. It's sad enough that those families lost their kids to police violence , but to she was brazen, he told her to move along, is not civil courage for me, she managed to get her 5 minutes of fame. Well done for applauding it.
@RS-hc9xs
@RS-hc9xs 4 жыл бұрын
@@mquinn135 I'm not sure how you can argue that she is in the wrong. Even if you think she is "brazen", she is not breaking any laws by filming the police and being told to move along is not justified by any legal authority in this context. Conversely, giving your own acceptance that there is a problem with policing I would think you'd want more cameras on their work to catch the ones that are criminally abusing their position. I stand by my argument - she should be lauded for ignoring the cop's efforts to intimidate her. As to whether she did it for benign motives or fame I see no evidence in this video that goes to motive, and would consequently suggest you examine your own motives for assuming it is the latter.

I by no means have him right but she did not know what the situation was, I watched it too, to many police to many people and if there had been a scuffle and someone may have got shot. So I will disagree with your point. It will remain like this. However, you discuss in a very pleasant manner, without being offensive a plus point for you. It might simply be a matter of due process. Gather evidence, hear his arguments, and then determine an appropriate course of action. Don't get me wrong, given the historical context I am not confident there will be appropriate justice. I'm just saying that immediate firing without an investigation for claims of non-violent misconduct isn't really the gold standard.
@GO-GO_SO-SO
@GO-GO_SO-SO 4 жыл бұрын
@@RS-hc9xs What is there to really investigate when the entire reaction is on camera though? This not much a claim as it is just a matter of fact. It would be one thing if the woman just said he did with no evidence, but that is not the case at all. We see and hear what this punk officer does. Then he tries to intimidate them by following her? Yeah, pretty much anyone else would be fired on the spot. Being that these are police that go through training and are supposed to be the ones with discretion and have authority to do what most citizens cannot, they should actually be held to a higher standard. Instead, they are held to lower standards for behavior and conduct.
@RS-hc9xs
@RS-hc9xs 4 жыл бұрын
@@GO-GO_SO-SO pardon, I am not saying the evidence isn't significant or that the officer is likely to be proven innocent. Even if you find a man in a room with a bloody knife and his dead wife, and you see a video of him stabbing her, you still don't throw him into prison without a trial. What if that cop, who was vulgar with a citizen and later abused his authority by looking for a reason to give her a citation, was drugged, raped and beaten just that morning? Maybe then we see his tension in a different light. Don't get me wrong, I doubt very much this cop has any kind of justification, I'm just saying even if we are prone to rush to judgement on what seems like irrefutable evidence, we don't really want authorities to do the same particularly if one of our critiques of policing is that they rush to judgement based on personal observations and do not implement due process. It can feel cathartic to treat cops the way we feel they treat us, but I personally think we have a stronger case if we remain ideologically consistent. Incidents should be investigated, and accountability meted out as objectively as possible. As an aside, I also agree cops should be held to a higher standard. One of the key issues for me in this video is that the cop lost his patience and lashed out because of what seems to me to be just a little bit of stress. He has privileges afforded to him by his position, and those privileges come coupled with responsibilities. Lives depend on him keeping a level head.
@GO-GO_SO-SO
@GO-GO_SO-SO 4 жыл бұрын
@@RS-hc9xs Employment works a little differently than the law and criminal justice, and during a time where trust and respect for police has decreased, they should be doing everything they can to weed out these bad apples people talk about who don't not represent the entirety of the cops. I'm pretty sure the cop was not drugged, beaten, and rapped that morning or ever, but I see the point. I am also kind of tired of the excuse or reason for bad behavior of they experience things. They are supposed to be trained and able to handle the job. If they can't handle the pressure or stress, just like with any other job, they should not be there. If anyone else was so stressed that they would talk to and treat people like that while on the job because they dared question them, they would be working there, and people would be wondering why they were even in that job to begin with. But we excuse or explain away that kind of behavior for people with guns and training responsible for protecting and serving the taxpayers. Also, I wonder if he is getting paid while suspended.

Again, it is far to easy during this period of unrest to automatically fault police. It's a tough job and this wasn't a case of police putting a choke hold on the suspect or abusing him in any manner. However, I am a reasonable person and if I had scene any physical abuse of the gentleman I would hope that someone was there to capture it as evidence. But, voicing your opinion about the general decline in police behavior at this particular moment was uncalled for. Final point is this. IF THE POLICE ARE CONDUCTING AN INVESTIGATION AND INSTRUCT YOU TO MOVE BACK OR TO NOT INTERFERE, THEY HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO ARREST YOU IF YOU REFUSE. PERIOD END OF STORY. ALL THE INSULTING WORDS MEAN NOTHING IN FRONT OF THE JUDGE WHEN YOU ARE ASKED, WHY DIDN'T YOU OBEY THE OFFICERS INSTRUCTIONS. You have no defense. Guilty as charged. Like I said, she was wrong first and he was wrong second.
@RS-hc9xs
@RS-hc9xs 4 жыл бұрын
@@craigjgomez I don't think your assertions necessarily stand on firm legal ground. If there is no risk to your safety and a cop instructs you to move I'm fairly sure they are doing so illegally, and arresting you on false charges would be an illegal detention. Do you have a source to back your assertion? In any case I think you have not thought through your challenge very carefully. In this case the police officer was trying to obstruct the filming, and get a potential witness to leave the scene. You seem to be presuming they were doing so for her safety but if they were violating the rights of that man then the exact same actions could be furtherance of the crime. The whole point of filming is to ensure that crimes that may occur will be caught on camera, and if you agree that cops can commit crimes then it makes sense to defend a citizen's right to film them. The alternative is basically ensuring that no abusive cop is ever caught, because they could always use the authority you seem to think they have to cover up their crimes. I realize this is annoying for honest cops, but given the context I think they should get used to it. Police corruption is far too rampant to allow the status quo to continue.

Base on your statement, you don't want people to get involved in a situation bc "mined your own business". I will have to admit that this cop was being totally unprofessional and he was being a major league a**hole as most of them are and he was saying some totally unnecessary disrespectful things and should be punished by his superiors. But at the same time I will also have to admit that, although I am not absolutely sure as to what the c-word means, I've been talked to much worse than that from the cops on several occasions. Especially when I was young. Cops have never seemed to like young black men for some reason. And it wasn't always white cops that would do the verbal degrading. Black cops can be bullies as well. You are just a lot less likely to end up dead with a black cop than you would a white cop. I personally grew up with a serious fear and hatred of the police. Police being bullies is nothing new, but thanks to today's technology, I am glad that they are finially being exposed.

We're often told that, if we have nothing to hide, we should just cooperate with the police and nothing will happen and you'll be able to go on your way. The police should take their own advice. If they have nothing to hide, they should be happy that they are being filmed by the public because that will show everyone that they are doing a good job. He's clearly pissed off that there should be a suggestion that the police wouldn't always do the right thing. He's got his fellow cops to thank for that and, given his attitude, himself as well, as he's almost certainly part of the problem. A good cop would want to repair the damage, not bully those who don't trust cops into submission.

As a woman the one thing that was alarming to me was that when a woman says no to a man, or in this case to stay away, normal men know that no means no! So when he said no to her - it made me think that it's very likely that he's the kind of man who would take a woman on a date and force himself on her sexually in spite of her telling him no. That was my gut reaction to when I heard him make it clear that he wasn't going to get out of her space. Honestly he sounded like a teenager the way he acted. It really took me by surprise. A normal man has instincts to look out for a woman and they don't feel intimidated when she asks them to keep their space. I mean they don't use that as an opportunity to show how tough they are! They understand that they need to back off and they do so out of RESPECT. This cocky a-hole does the opposite of what a normal man would do for any normal woman. He's a scary guy because of that. And I hope he has very serious consequences eventually. He does not deserve to have a badge. Part of their oath is to protect and serve. What part of bullying a woman is protecting her?

America has never been a free country with equaly for all. It took me a long time to accept the brutal truth. 44 years of life doing to "right things". Risking my life flying combat missions to protect a constitution that is not upheld. Earning degree after degree. Being a model citizen and never committing any crimes. In the end, none of it mattered. I've pulled pulled over and had guns pointed at me so many times, I can not count. This first time I was 8 or 9. My personal experiences in life have shown me I have zero to minimal rights. The truth at times is very painful to accept. Stay Blessed Fam!!!!!!
