How so? If your child did something illegal would you would go to jail? Parents have near zero responsibility. Also, you misunderstand what rights are. Rights are actions that are right. ex. This pisses me off. The only reason I didn't kill myself during high school is because I knew there was at least ONE space where I could be myself. My parents made it pretty clear that being gay wouldn't be ok, so I came out in school and to friends and school turned out to be my safe haven where I could just be myself. Teachers are there to teach. They shouldn't have the responsibility of having to out a student. Plus, if the parents were accepting of their child, they would've come out already.

If your child isn't comfortable talking to you about these types of things, that says a lot about what kind of parent you are or at least what kind of parent your child perceives you to be.
@KazumiKiguma8 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that still falls under "uncomfortable". As in, EXTREMELY uncomfortable. That's why most kids wait until they're out of their parent's houses to come out now, and I think it's horrible that any parent would treat their child as an object rather than as their own person.

This is very upsetting. I am gay myself, although my parents have been as accepting and normal about it as I could ever hope. BUT I know it's downright dangerous for many kids. They could be kicked out on the street, beaten, or even killed. She claims it's for the "right" to their child's life, but there is no such thing. That's the point of teenage years: find out who you are and start building your own identity. I never could get along with my mom when I was a teen, and I turned to a teacher instead. That had its ups and downs but that teacher changed my life. I love my mom and we get along great now (I'm 31) but I remember that awkward period. This is insanity.

Parents don't have a "right to know". Parents should NOT have any special privileges that allow them to be downright invasive on their children's privacy. There is a fine line between parental rights and human rights that children have that cannot be infringed by caregivers. Children should have a right to privacy, especially in areas such as these considering both how being lgbt is controversial in certain areas of our society and how coming out is a very personal matter. Parents should not have this totalitarian power over their child because parents don't always know what's best for their child. There are many questions that kids are asking today that are relatively new, that many parents might not have asked when they were younger. Kids don't always feel safe asking their parents because there can exist a disconnection between contemporary society and the traditional paths of more conservative families. Children should have the ability to seek out information from different sources and be free to confide in whoever they trust, because parents arent always worthy of their child's trust. Children are people, and should be treated like humans, not pets.

Along with being transgender, can come gender dysphoria along with other issues. That might lead to suicide or self harm. I'd like to see an argument made that a parent doesn't have the right to know their child is suffering from a condition that might lead to them committing suicide. I'd also like people to imagine a parent having to bury a child as a result of the child committing suicide, that might've been prevented.

I could not imagine being 15 and going to my school guidance counselor, who I thought I could trust and telling her I’m gay. Only to have her say “I will have to call your parents and tell them out”, then be kicked out and possibly attacked by my father who was deep in addiction at that time. Even though I begged for her not to tell them. Oh but she “has to” by law. But 15 year old me didn’t know that. So now 15 year old me would be on the streets. Yeah, this is disgusting.

Hannah Bradley exactly. I was 15 when I first started to realize I’m gay. I was depressed and suicidal and sometimes went to my guidance counselor to talk. I have known male gays who can't tell their parents because of the uproar this would cause. Some parents disown their sons. Schools should be on the side of humanity and not of die hard conservative parents, Schools should also serve to save children from their parents. - I tried to tell my father but he was so upset that I went back an hour later and said I had realised I was not gay. Eventually there was quite a fuss.Parents like to blame others so my parents persecuted a lesbian friend for 'influencing' me. They threatened to reveal her inclination to school authorities and told me that they would stop my study allowance.if I shared my flat with this lesbian and her companion. I said, 'Go ahead, I'll find a job" and I did the flat sharing. Later they got over it all.

Yes, the podcast doesn't tell us how the school might know before the parents. At my boarding school the school found out first and a boy was immediately - absurdly - expelled so his parents found out the hard way. It is quite normal for young people to go through a bisexual phase - see Freud. There was quite a bit of erotic play among the boys but I was quite a little puritan then and refused to join in. Not so long ago a scandal was unearthed at the same school, A boy after many years - decades - claimed that he had been obliged to do a blow job on a prefect (older boy with authority). I wrote a letter to the Principal saying how dreadful and I was sorry but I had to admit that I would like to have been in that boy's place. The school still keeps up a friendly correspondence with me. I think they hope for financial contributions form 'old boys.'

Things that parents need to know: -academic performance -any crimes or abuse against the child (for instance, if the child revealed that an uncle had been inappropriately touching them to their counsellor, the counsellor would have to notify both the parents and the police) -health problems or life threatening mental illness (i.e. Suicidal ideation). -Pregnancy What they don't have the right to know: -friendship/relationship drama -sexual orientation/gender identity -stresses and anxieties -any rants about the family -personal religious or spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof) My parents are conservative (but Canadian conservative which is pretty much democrats lol), christian "family values" people. I'm a non-religious bisexual. If they had told my parents... Yeesh. Bad things would've happened. How so? This is literally taking away freedom from homosexual students to come out to who they trust and potentially endangering them emotionally, and in some cases, physically if the parents told are insane religious nuts.
@biggsydaboss34108 жыл бұрын
+Raizhen010 This law also covers trans people, that will include people with gender dysphoria. A condition that comes with a massively increased chance of suicide ideation. What about the parents that would want to support their children, who love them and do their best by them. Do they not have the right to be informed if their child was suffering? Should parents also not get to know if their child has a condition that carries an increased risk of suicide, like depression or psychosis?
@KazumiKiguma8 жыл бұрын
The worse part about it covering trans people is that a lot of them aren't even wanting to actually switch genders deep down, they just identify more with the stereotypes we've labeled as "masculine" and "feminine". So if a dude likes cute things or wants to look pretty or a girl wants to build muscle, suddenly they're a freak when it's society that forced that label, not nature. It has nothing to do with who they want to bang.
@jannmutube8 жыл бұрын
Raizhern010, I don't think the law would take away freedom to express sexual identity, it only places sexual identity with a person's birth. Homosexuality is a genetic condition not a choice. Children, parents, and authorities should accept the gender identity a person is born with. I agree with Konni Burton in that a parent should have the right to know if their child is acting contrary to their birth identity. It may be that they are being abused by someone. A child or young adult is not physically or emotionally mature nor do they have the life experience to be given adult rights and responsibilities. To do so would undermine the child's safety and their sense of security. Ultimately, the health and protection of the child should be in the hands of their parents. Also, evidently, transgender operations haven't prevented suicide due to gender dysphoria.so your complaint is a false imperative. I expect that a sex change operation leaves a ghost identity similar to ghost limbs of amputees. The only provisions I would give the state are: 1. require schools to provide separate bathrooms for those born XXY and ask parents to explain to their children (at an appropriate age) that a person should not be shamed for their genetic gender identification. 2. that parents can't change the sexual identity of their child... not even by genetic manipulation.of a fetus. Preventing sexual abnormalities due to hormone or testosterone levels in utero would not be making a change as long as the fetus is not XXY.

If this law passes, every student should make an appointment with their school officials and claim that they are Homosexual. Then the next day tell them that, whoops, guess they're actually Heterosexual. Then gay again. Then Bisexual, then Pansexual, Straight again, Asexual, etc... It can culminate with everyone claiming to have awoken to their Fursona and coming to school in bunny/cat/etc... ear headbands and Sonic the Hedgehog T-shirts for a month. And when the staff starts protesting that they are legally required to make upwards of twelve thousand phonecalls a week to increasingly agitated parents, the students can actually get some honest discourse going on the grounds that their parents reflexively scream dismissive obscenities whenever they pick up a call from their kids' schools.

Why do so many people think that parents just automatically have the right to know everything about their child? Parents should have to earn things like this, just like everyone else. If the parent is bad or makes the child afraid to express themselves, clearly that parent doesn't even deserve to be involved. Everyone else is that child's life has to work to gain their trust and to learn his/her/their secrets, and I really don't understand why parents are all that different. How many times would a school misidentify a student who was rumored to be gay, but wasn't? How many times would a school out a gay student, resulting in the parents not accepting their child, then either the teen is sent to an ex-gay camp, or kicked out, or runs away, or is simply not accepted and lives the remainder of his or her teens in an effectively hostile prison-like environment, the parents and child at odds, also affecting other kids at home? Terrible idea. If this is passed into law, it could cause terrible harm. The figures for how many homeless youth are not straight, and how many kids in school feel threatened because they hear gay slurs, or have been victims of violence because they were perceived to be gay, are terribly high. The problem does not need to be made worse. if more kids get kicked out, what happens? Homeless kids who turn to prostitution, drugs, and other crime in order to survive, or they end up dead or addicted or with STD's. Very rarely do they get lucky enough to get off the streets and get clean. Stupid politicians who do not think things through and think they're doing right. Sure, the students are minors, but their sex/gender orientation should be their private information because if revealed, it could result in their harm, abuse, neglect, homelessness, ou name it.

Just have the citizens make sure the law is properly enforced [i.e., by making sure the gender identity of ALL students is shared] and then the law will soon disappear. The sheer logistics of ascertaining from each student his/her gender identity and then contacting every parent to tell them the child's gender expression/orientation would be so logistically challenging I don't think the law would last long. Plus, since gender identity is a so-called "choice," have all of the students get together to choose a new gender identity for each month to make the gender collecting and reporting just that much onerous.

darkmantlestudios exactly, that is the only way that law is practical. which is why straight, non-trans students need to participate in that "I am Sparticus" moment; and parents of straight, non-trans students need to demand to be informed of their children's gender alignment if the law is to be enforced against other students. I think it also leaves them open to a lawsuit by LGBTQ students for selected, targeted enforcement.
@bonaventura15198 жыл бұрын
Dun Hilda regardless of whether or not you agree with the existence of transgender/same sex attraction individuals, many people do and this is largely what the battle is over, dealing with the fact that there are people who feel that way and want to be respected as human beings. And, making those kinds of determinations, in that context, is difficult. The people who are writing the law believe there are only two options correlating with biological gender but the law itself that they wrote does not assume two genders correlating with biological gender. So, the discussion is fundamentally over an "as if" reality, if you will, which is why - assuming the parameters of the discussion- no one can just boil it down to two. I do think there is a difference between demanding tolerance and respect for someone as a human being who experiences LGBTQ, and approving of what they are doing as a result of those experiences. While I experience some of those feelings myself, given my Catholic background I cannot approve of certain relationships among individuals who feel same sex attraction, but this is not going to stop me from supporting national measures to protect them from abuse and to protect the national value of tolerance for individuals with whom I disagree.

all this would do is force kids to hide in the closet if they aren't ready to tell their parents. They'd just hide it from their teachers...which only leads to negativity. No one can be happy unless they aren't having to live a lie or hide.

Dlsturbedfan you're not linked. it's based on a gross misunderstanding of personality, attachment style, and attraction. You'll figure it out in a few years.

Not funny. You do realize kids will be harmed if they're outed to unaccepting families, right? You're making fun of it and not accepting it. Go google the percentage of homeless youth who identify as not straight. You don't care, do you?

The consequence of this will be that a gay child whose parents don't know they are gay (for whatever reason) will now have to hide their sexuality from the school as well in order to prevent their parents from finding out. Yet another consequence will be that if a teacher, by law, must inform a parent of the child's sexual orientation, what if the teacher does not know? What if that information or topic has never come up in relation to a student? Is the teacher supposed to investigate? For that matter, is the teacher supposed to keep records on who is and who isn't gay or are they supposed to commit such information to memory? Are they now going to have to analyse the conduct of students and look for "clues" as to their sexuality? -All of which point out that the logic this law has not been thought out in any way whatsoever.

It's like Doctor-patient confidentiality. A teacher, other than assigning homework and choosing grades, also has to be a mentor and counselor.
