I don't know what it is about China, but when we lived there I routinely saw people opting to use the toilet into trash cans on subway platforms (when there were bathrooms 20 feet down the platform), pissing into bathroom sinks instead of the actual toilets, even in alleyways during daylight hours. I never did figure out why.
