Today the History Guy tells two stories of American political assassinations at the turn of the 19th century. First he talks about the only assassination of a sitting US governor. Then he talks about the former governor killed by dynamite. While they happened in different parts of the country, together they illustrate some of the biggest political battles of the time, and the lengths some went to get their way.
This is original content based on research by The History Guy. Images in the Public Domain are carefully selected and provide illustration. As very few images of the actual event are available in the Public Domain, images of similar objects and events are used for illustration.
All events are portrayed in historical context and for educational purposes. No images or content are primarily intended to shock and disgust. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Non censuram.

I love these podcasts. It's like shooting the breeze with friends, on interesting topics. Even with topics which I initially think might not be interesting, the show rapidly changes my mind. I appreciate your efforts. Thankyou.

I think we're in the middle of a second "gilded age", and I can only hope we've learned something from the first.

One of the things that was kind of glossed over that was a major point in the 1899 Mining strike was the Federal troops that were sent by McKinley at the request of Steunenberg were African American soldiers called Buffalo Soldiers. Many former Confederate soldiers had moved to Northern Idaho post Civil War. So being rounded up and put into pens by Black soldiers would not have helped. Also another interesting fact is that the partners in Bunker Hill Mining Company were Protestant, while many of the miners were Irish Catholics. So this built a lot of animosity in the region between the unions and the State and Federal government.

I’m not sure if they still teach a separate Kentucky history class or not. Hopefully it’s still in the curriculum. Thank you for all the stories and hard work.

I also have a history degree, which included a seminar course on the Gilded Age in America. My American history survey text mentioned labour incidents such as the Haymarket Square riot and the Pullman strike, but I never heard of the events in Iowa until I bought the book "Big Trouble: A Murder in a Small Western Town Sets Off a Struggle for the Soul of America" (1997) by J. Anthony Lukas at a public library book sale 15 years or so ago.

Thanks for doing the story on Governor Goebel. When I was a grade schooler we took Kentucky history. The story was covered in that class. I was born and raised in Covington and played Little League baseball at Goebel Park. Just to mention there was a small error in the podcast. Governor Goebel was shot in Frankfort, not Lexington. I have stood on the spot where he was shot and seen the plaque.

Hey Lance, have you done a video yet about Henry Ford's notorious henchman Harry Bennett??? It's amazing to me what he did to Ford employees under the guise of "protecting" Ole Henry's car company... most of the time with Henry's permission. It's surprising he never went to jail for any of his actions and managed to live a long live instead.

The plaque says "Goebel Fell Here" and it is in Frankfort, not Lexington, in front of the old state capitol building. The building from where he was shot housed the Kentucky Historical Society for many years, and the clothes he was wearing when he was shot was on display inside.

There was an apocryphal legend that the two men on the Kentucky state flag are shaking hands to confirm that the other guy isn’t armed.
