There was a Steam review that just said “They got bigger.” There’s only a couple possibilities for what they meant, but I’m pretty sure the answer to them is “yes they did.”

I think you are right. Many people have stopped by because of Riza. But I think it's only half the story. To me, it feels like Ryza and to a much lesser extent Sophie 1, are the first games where the tech feels good. Animations feels like a huge step up and the games render beautifully and that had a huge part to play in keeping people after they get over Ryza.

Putting my thoughts out there. I have been playing Atelier since Meruru although I did skip some entries. Sophie is, and will always be, my favourite character in the series. As for Ryza, played and completed the first one and thought it was just as good as the other entries. Never finished Ryza 2 because I just wasn't that into the story. Might pick up Ryza 3 because I love crafting, seriously, I spent 4 days IRL just crafting before taking on the final boss in Sophie 2. I am happy that "sex sells" helped the franchise but personally I'm not into the hype for Ryza. An okay character but I'm more into the gameplay and synthesis, as long as the gameplay and story is solid I will keep supporting the franchise.

I feel like atelier needs a major gameplay reboot because with ryza 3 it's really becoming extremely stall especially with the open-ish world which is another issue within its own. after the marie remake im done

Why you gotta put emphasis on "Come" so many times haha. But you're not wrong it seems. Basically the devs took the Nier Automata approach and grabbed people with the sex appeal but kept them there for the actual gameplay and story. 2:06 Right there is what I'm getting at. The games themselves are actually very good - the sex appeal is purely just a bonus; just like with Automata. While I haven't even fully beat Ryza 1 yet, I find myself wanting to try the other Atelier games as well because it really does seem like a fun hidden gem franchise. My backlog is horrifying, but I do plan on continuing Ryza 1 and the rest of her series at the very least, and once I eat down some of the other JRPGs that are in limbo, I'll give Sophie a visit.

There no English Dub due to KOEI Tecmo wanting to have the game released outside of Japan closer to Japanese release. Ryza 3 releasing a day after is a milestone where as before Ryza we had to wait 6 month to a Year to get the games.

Nice review Shadow! I've played the Arland games a little but the time limits REALLY stressed me out, heck all I managed to do in Rorona was the main assignments and nothing else so this ended up being one of the very few games I regret buying, I got NO ENDING in Totori so that bummed me out, I got Meruru cause pretty much the charming character designs and the chill vibe of these games but never beat it, I don't know why I got Ayesha(I think that was the next one after Meruru), I guess I just wanted to give the series a try again. Bu yeah, my history with this series is a rocky one lol I saw Ryza's design and yeah I'm in the same came that her thighs pulled me back in and knowing there was no time limit was a great thing to know cause that's the only thing I didn't like...until I found out I Ryza doesn't have an English Dub and I was like "NOOOO!!! It was almost perfect!"...damn that bummed me out. Luckily I got the game on my Switch cause I won a twitter contest from Gust and played it a little. I liked what I played but no English Dub took me out of it and I just veered towards a game that did, real shame too cause these games I would totally like a lot and really enjoy IF they had an English Dub. Oh well, maybe another time...if Gust can pull out a design style move like with Ryza in the future lol Hmm, if the Ryza games were dubbed I COULD hear Cassandra Lee Morris voicing her(Fie from Trails of Cold Steel, Morgana from Persona 5, Nero Claudius from Fate/Extra). Idk, Ryza just seems like a character she would end up voicing.

@@creatorsfreedom6734 so I can understand what the characters are saying. I don’t speak Japanese. English dubs have gotten much better over time and if I’m going to spend 100 hours on an RPG, I want to be able to understand the characters. It adds to my sense of immersion.

Playing the first game recently. The game is definitely more than just about thighs (Ehem.......) Anyway, the gameplay is a hit or miss. If you only enjoy purely Active Time Battle like in Final Fantasy, this game may not be for you. But if you are willing to spend time to study the crafting system in the game and doesn't find crafting process boring even though it makes up like 2/3 of the game, you probably will like the game. In my case, I first bought the first game on sales as I had heard about the good reputation of the game, plus I admit I am a pervert who fell for the character design initially. Played the game for the first time one year ago, but I dropped it because I didn't really like the alchemy crafting system and find it a chore to learn. But early this year, after I finished Sekiro, my gaming interest was reignited, so I started to revisit some games I didn't enjoy at first and decided to give them second chance, including Death Stranding and Atelier Ryza. Although they are all completely different games, but because Sekiro pushed my limit to learn new things in the game, I found myself becoming more patience when learning new gaming mechanism, and finally I was able to appreciate the game presentation of Death Stranding, and also the crafting mechanism in Atelier Ryza. Now I am halfway through the game, and I already plan to get the second and third Atelier Ryza game. Sorry if I talk too much, but just want to share with you, just try the game when it is on sale and find out yourself.

Gross - it sux that the design is a sexist pile of shit but the games themselves are fun. I would love to see normal looking characters and the fckn design is why I avoided the games so long but now I do play them and enjoy the games but I would kill for a main character with a sweatshirt and a pair of jean and a normal human body.

@@SchwarzKreuz Unfounded no as this is exactly the type of game I like EXCEPT for the sexist art work. I honestly can not think of even one other game like this without the crappy art. I love the alchemy and gathering part of the game and the story and fighting is decent...other 'clone' games have been really poor.
