THICK COVER Vertical Jigging Crappie Spawn on Lake Okeechobee

My Dad and I are back out on Lake Okeechobee doing some vertical jigging for specks (Crappie) securing a 2-man limit (50 fish). This particular style of vertical jigging involves pulling open holes of dollar weed, hyacinths, iron grass and dropping down a crappie jig. During times of crappie spawn, this is especially lucrative as they move into the weeds to lay their eggs.

It varies, anywhere from 3-5ft usually.

I use 6lb mono, sometimes 8. My dad’s been using braid lately.

In such this cover, what is the advantage of clearing holes so far from the boat and using such long poles? Would a 7’ pole work?

Distance doesn't necessarily provide any advantage, it's just a comfortable distance with the length of the jigging rods we're using. But yes, you could definitely use any length rod and even pull a hole right next to the boat. If the fish are down there, they'll strike.

How far under the ‘mat’ do you drop? Nice mess! Good job of videoing!

Sometimes they'll strike just a few inches under the weeds, other times a few feet down. When Crappie are hunkered underneath that stuff, they're a bit all over the place depth wise.
