I started knitting my own kilt hose a few years ago, and I'll never go back! I can choose the exact color, size, yarn weight--everything--and they fit me wonderfully because I've made them just for me. Highly recommend!

Since I don't wear sneakers this is not a problem. But, I do wear thick kilt hose with my kilts. The extra cushioning with my footwear is a desired feature that I like.

So when it comes to sneakers as well as just the times were kilt hose them selves may not be appropriate like hiking on a very hot day, but you want a variety of color and length I have found that going with soccer socks is the perfect option. I can get them in virtually all basic colors and roll them well past my knee or let them bunched down around the top of the shoe which looks really good. It gives that higher fullness look that helps make the kilt look good.

If I’m wearing a kilt casually I really like a pair of Allbirds wool runners in all black (sole and upper). They’re not bulbous or flashy. I usually pair them with a pair of dark or neutral color boot socks from Darn Tough. The shoes are nondescript enough that I can get away with a pair of dark gray hose with flashes if I want to dress it up a little bit and still be comfortable.

Good afternoon all. For my tuppenny'orth (love to hear how you pronounce that) an Anglo-Scot, is that when I am wearing the kilt and going to be on my feet a long time, I wear football socks, or as you will have it soccer socks. They are generally lighter than Kilt hose and come in all colours. I am a post metatarsal amputee (no toes) on my left foot and wear orthotic shoes that are "tailor" made to my feet or ghillie brogues with special insoles.

I wore sneakers with hose while selling at a local holiday market and a fishing expo recently. (I build hand made fishing rods, duck calls and other outdoor gear. Also a few sporrans!). Anyway, my sneakers are predominantly gray and so are my hose. Had on a cheap tweed vest, shirt and tie and Lamont Ancient kilt. I felt comfortable, and got lots of complements. However, if I’m going on a date with my wife or other more “dressy” occasion, I try not to wear sneakers. Hoping to purchase some boots sometime soon.

What Rocky is wearing is fine. I wouldn't wear kilt hose with sneakers at all. It just doesn't work. At the very least get a good pair of hiking boots, that works really well with most tartans and gives your kit a bit more in the way of class. I already have a pair of boots for work and they're great with kilting. For one, they're already broken in from work, and they're extremely comfortable. The one thing I won't do is wear flashes with that unless I went with a collared shirt, perhaps tie, and a vest.

When I wear my kilt, I wear kilt hose, unless hiking, where I wear wool hiking socks with my hiking boots. I can’t see myself wearing a kilt and sneakers. I use oxfords, ghillie-brogues, or hiking boots. I even wore kilt hose for Highland competitions. I feel that kilts look better with longer socks, with the shortest that I wear being my hiking socks (mid calf).

I'm pretty much only going to wear kilt hose when I cross the casual/dressy threshold. Most other times I'm wearing some kind of boot with the tops of the socks shoved down around the boot tops. That or I'm going "Island Highland" with flip flops and a loud tropical shirt. My Ghilile Brogues are slightly large to wear with my thickest hand knit hose. This is typically only for formal or semi-formal. For thinner hose I wear a thin pair of cotton no-show or thin nylon dress socks (matching color to hose) socks under the hose. Pro tip. A pair of thin nylon dress socks under kilt hose or regular socks helps prevent wear on the hose (yep, it happens from the inside too) and blisters, especially if you're wearing newer, footwear that hasn't broken in, or when you know you'll be spending all day on your feet.

I don’t even use sneakers at all. Most of my other shoes/boots doesn’t goes well with the kilt at all. Only have a pair of brown oxford brogues and a pair of blue loafers to go with for now.

I might consider a pair of hose with a high sneaker like converse but that would be it. Most the time I wear some kinda of boots. Duty boots might get hose but dressier boots always get hose.

+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the manufacturer perspective.* I pick Size 9-1/2 service shoes for most socks; the thicker construction o' kilt hose would probably force Size 10.

I *almost always* wear kilt hose, even if I'm wearing them with my all-black minimal sneakers. I wouldn't wear kilt hose with trainers, though. (On the other hand, I only wear trainers when exercising.)

Yes I would wear Kilt Hose with sneakers. But nothing in the Pipers hose arena. Keep it simple and smooth. Some hose are more utilitarian than others. I wear Kilt hose with hiking shoes all the time.

I'd defidently consider getting insoles, versus thicker hose. I'm probably biased because I have flat feet and need insoles anyway, but unless your looking for more of a snug feel in your shoes, I don't think thicker hose would do the job as well some insoles, plus your feet might start to sweat too much and thats no fun.

What about footless hose? The British military hose don't have a foot so you can wear thin socks.

I was not blessed with the 'fur' gene and my legs look like I've shaved them so I don't wear anything but kilt hose. My quest has always been to find shoes that look good with them and comfort is a blessing if I'm successful. I wear Keen's (shoes & boots. Sorry no sandals.) But, Clark's have a lot of really nice looking shoes that are comfortable.

It sounds like the questioner feels he must wear kilt hose with his kilt even though he has chosen to wear sneakers. Since he is not wearing shoes that traditionally go with a kilt he does not need to wear kilt hose. The simple answer is he should wear thinner cotton socks that go with the sneakers.

Personally, I wear the hose and that’s that. What I hope to see someday is a blended or a combination sock-the bottom, or Footy portion below the ankle made of a modern day, breathable thinner material, and that would be sewn into attached to a wool kilt sock above the ankle. I guess we’ll have to wait and see who comes up with the innovative idea on how to manufacture such a sock so that the manufacturer can make a profit, and that the consumer can easily afford s😮uch a sock. What I took from your video is whatever floats your boat, you can pursuit comfort, and or your signature look as long as it’s respectable to the kilt.

Get better black dress shoes rather than sneakers. If you need thinner or warm weather hose, order from a Bermuda outfitter

Instead of wearing sneakers wear doc Martians. If you are needing more dressy shoes. Buy johnston Murphys or Edmond Allen's. They are just as comfortable as sneakers.

TBH, I only wear kilt hose on special occasions when I need to look a bit more formal than my usual style which is mostly casual. I don't wear kilt hose with sneakers either. However, I do have some non-sneaker shoes that are all black that I will wear kilt hose with, on occasion. Mostly though, I don't wear kilt hose. I wear a lot of knee high socks, some are compression-style socks, others are baseball socks. I do have some crew socks that I'll wear, sometimes with boots, sometimes with sneakers (or skater-style shoes, like Vans). I agree with the statement that no one is looking at your feet... or at least very few are looking at the feet. If people are looking at your kilt and hose, they'll be looking at your calves, and having them make your calves look larger is almost always a good thing, as it implies that you're more fit... at least it implies that I am more fit than I really am.

The sneakers and crew socks are not for me. Last year I picked up a pair of Allen Edmonds Dalton Wingtip Boots in Black and don’t think I will wear Gillis brogues or dress shoes with my kilt again. Just picked up a similar pair in brown with a rubber sole for a more casual look.
