I like how you are actually performing the action of stealing a painting, i.e., trimming the canvas off of its frame. I want more games to do this. Hate when you're tasked to let's say loot a treasure box and the corresponding animation is half-assed and generic looking. Make it look like the character is actually gathering or taking out whatever it is they're after in said treasure box. Games can be far more immersive that way, especially FPS ones.
@axayd11 жыл бұрын
It would be difficult to do that when you have so many objects to loot whereas here Im sure it was an objective that required you to do it since the game is so damn linear.

How interesting. I see Thief on Steam discounted for pre order all the time. What I admire is Adam being able to talk about the beta, specifically negatively. Just hearing him speak about the beta's flaws leads me to believe the developers are trying to get it right. They aren't afraid of their work being criticized and are listening for feedback. It's like the opposite of Battlefield 4! Thank you Adam for your impressions, Thief is back on my radar.

Well at this point any feedback he would be able to give can't be implemented, the game most likely has already gone gold and is being printed on discs at the moment.

The stealth genre was evolving for a while there, all the way up through Double Agent. The Splinter Cell series took the mechanics of Thief and ran with it. And then you have an installment that threw a monkey wrench into the machine by making the settings of several missions broad fucking daylight. Still the same light/sound mechanics, but there is the added obstacle being forced to do everything at midday with no shadows to hide in and a bunch of armed to the teach African soldiers running around pissed off. At that point in time I thought the genre could only get better, but for some unexplained reason every stealth franchise just sort of collectively threw their hands up and stopped trying. It has gotten to the point where it feels like Phantom Pain is really the last chance for a truly innovative stealth game.

louis Williams Exactly. It was created to counter the more fast-paced, action-packed games that the First-Person Shooter genre were spitting out at the time, and its relevance today is still high. I don't believe that this game will live up to the legacy the series created (much like Hitman: Absolution couldn't).
@EricAurumSkagg11 жыл бұрын
Joshua Boudreau Exactly. However, there are tons of "fast" games, so people who don't want to "lurk around in the shadows for hours" have plenty to choose from. What we don't have is more of those good ol' Thief games. If they don't want to make a true stealth game they shouldn't have used the brand name. They could make like the Arkane guys did and make a new IP. When you see Thief you expect slow paced, shadow lurking, water arrowing gameplay goodness.

Adam, you mentioned that this new Thief borrowed a couple gameplay elements from Dishonored. Aside from that, how is the gameplay when compared to Dishonored? I absolutely loved that game and have played it four times already. Is there anything that Thief does better than Dishonored? Worse? P.S. inb4 all the angry responses: I know Dishonored used the original Thief as inspiration. I've played them all too. Just want to get a good comparison here.
@bveracka11 жыл бұрын
No one who has played the beta has really given me a clear answer to this burgeoning question. I LOVE Dishonored! Those huge levels that you can get lost in for hours are just awesome, and for me they really make the game. In Dishonored exploration is rewarded very generously, and what gamer doesn't enjoy that?! If the new Theif can overcome the struggles that the cross-platform titles will have (less than optimal visuals among other small things), then it's going to be a hit. People are calling this one as junk too early, methinks.

That's the whole point of stealth games. They're meant to be slow and measured because no one is meant to know you're there. They're about avoiding the action. Its a snail's pace yes because that's how you build the tension. Its about the thought of being seen or heard. It makes being caught more meaningful. God help the next generation of gaming.

Eidos has pre-rendered major prologue cutscenes in all their recent games (Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and now Thief). It's nice for special effects but even on PC they go with a low resolution/low quality FMV and it's unlikely they'll fix that in Thief. It sucks because it's so jarring in comparison with the in-engine graphics.

@TheDastardlyDerek11 жыл бұрын
2004? the first Thief was released in 1999. Thief: Deadly Shadows was released in 2004, which was considered to be the worst of the series by a large number of fans. Thief: The Dark Project was essentially the very first stealth game, and it's sequel Thief 2: Metal Age (2000) has for deeper stealth mechanics than most modern stealth games. Most of the worry for this game comes from the fear of it being a streamlined version of the original series, gutted of any hardcore focus.

I'm going to pick-up my copy in a few hours, so I'm staying away from ALL reviews until I play it for myself. Reviews all too often spoil games for me because of opinion-based stuff (nonsense) that reviewers say. Especially if I like the reviewer, like Adam here, I tend to hang on every word. More times than not, I find myself holding opinions about games before I've even played them because I watch (and read) too many reviews. Just a word to the wise; PLAY the game, then talk about it! Sadly the story of Bioshock Infinite was COMPLETELY RUINED for me by the ass-clowns who spammed the comments sections with stuff like, "Elizabeth kills you in the end!!!!" and "You ARE Comstock!!" ... and so I refuse to ruin another (possibly) great game.

They did justice to Deus Ex, making one of my favorite games of all time: Human Revolution. A game with obvious flaws, but they have already tackled one of the greatest PC franchises of all time, now for the other. Really the shortcomings of HR and now with what we have been told about Thief seems to be indicative of publisher pressure. HR was rushed and was lacking overall, but the genius of the game shined through. This abuse by the powers at be lead to the studio's head to leave this past Spring. This show of defiance seems to have been in vein, as Thief looks to be a rushed title as well. While you could cite it's lengthy development time, the constant revisions and now corner cutting are most decidedly a result of publisher pressure.

I think the game looks great so far. My only complaint is that garrets voice actor was not hired. Plus I'm not too crazy about those ninja like hands in my face at all times when sneaking. I like the new animations for stealing objects. The environments look great. Remember thief is not dishonored if you fought two enemies at once you are dead. One was a challenge if not taken out stealthily because garret is a thief not a supernatural warrior. Im missing Ken levines writing skills here since looking glass pretty much be came irrational games but still disappointed the story is weak. Would have loved to see the original team tackle this game but it looks as good as it can for being made by a new team.

Jason Rose I think having a faster pace to a stealth is extremely relevant. I like stealth games but sometimes it gets really boring when half the time I am just waiting for guards to slowly walk by me. A stealth game can be more active than just sitting in the shadows crawling everywhere. I think you are being too sensitive about the last-gen comment. Titanfall and Thief are completely different games and there is a big difference between multiplayer and single player map design.

Lower resolution cut scenes? Sounds like their previous title, Human Revolution. The jarring transition from what was an otherwise passable looking game were a real downside and not something that was fixed in the Director's Cut. A game that could easily have rendered the same cut scenes in game. Developers needs to learn that whenever possible, use the game engine to render cut scenes, to avoid these kinds of hiccups in what are otherwise supposed to be immersive experiences.
@chocobo9211 жыл бұрын
the game engine for human revolution just couldn't handle a lot of what they wanted to do apparently. If you ever hear the director's cut dialogue, a lot of problems they explain seem to stem from the engine just not being the most advanced thing.

Eidos Montréal don't have the skills to make a next-generation game based on a classic franchise. The worst thing about this game is that apparently every single game mechanic that was in the original game, has been compromised for lazy implementation of visual quality in the form of animations. They didn't even try to dynamically animate free action, they immediately sacrificed the freedom for static animations. A true next-generation game would have been able to seamlessly blend the 100% free action of the original Thief games with responsive animations, without compromises. Eidos Montréal just don't seem to be... good enough to accomplish that.

Old Thief was bout learning the level, exploring it and deciding how to complete your objective while dodging guards. Design philosophy has changed, i'd be surprised if they pull that off. I already said, it could come out and be a good game on it's own merit but it's never going to be good compared to any other game in the franchise. They could've just reskinned MC, weapons and suddenly it's a whole new IP, thief is so old at this point nobody would even bother calling it a rip-off.

***** I'm didn't make up my mind about this game, i said it could be good. And judging from their old ~30 minutes demo they build levels in way that allow for more vertical movement so you just bypass some guards without them even having a chance to notice you, old thief made you either wait and go or just scrape walls in hope there is not enough light and sound to notice you.

Don't say Dishonored in any videos that are about Thief.

I wish I didn't hate 1st person so much. I just prefer games like this to be 3rd person.

I expect it to be a really good game that none of the initiated Thief fans like. The Human Revolution of Thief, if you will.
