Thiepval Memorial 1916-2016 | Commonwealth War Graves Commission |

At 7:28am on 1 July 1916, the 7 day British bombardment of German lines on the Somme reached its final deafening climax. Some 70,000 British soldiers made their final preparations as huge British mines were blown under some of the strongest German positions. At 7:30am, the men began their advance and the 141 days of the Somme Offensive began.

My great-uncle is named on this, he was killed on the 12 th July 1916 so emotional watching it.

I visited in 2016. when I got out of my car in the car park, I saw an ocean of crosses with poppies from all the visitors who had preceded me.. I needed several minutes alone as I could not talk and the tears would not stop. Watching this, brought it to the surface for another minute. One of my great uncles is listed on the memorial and to think he was one of 72,000 with no known grave is hard to comprehend.

MY RELATIVE IS LISTED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL. JUST WATCHING THIS IS VERY EMOTIONAL, I AM SO PROUD OF HIM HE WAS KILLED 23/9/1916.

I visited it last Sunday (28 aug. 2022) it was surprisingly quiet. Most of the men laid to rest are unknown.
