The reality is that these people whom these beautiful things are meant to help will steal, vandalize, set on fire, or destroy those nice things. This bonsai garden was free to the public; "Come in and enjoy, lift your spirits and find harmony." Might as well just put a cinder block fence around the garden and paint pictures on trees on it. But then that would get vandalized . . . . . Remember those consecutive months of rioting in Portland? Public Works had to remove the famous elk statue in the park square. It had gotten battered with crowbars. Hating government authorities, Trump, or whatever is one thing - but what did the elk do?

One of the things that is a real shame is the part of this story not being told. Apparently the thieves destroyed various things they couldn't take. They took some garden tool or hammer, whatever, and they smashed some of the plants. Why do that?

I'm Asian. Why would I want to steal a plant? Bonsai plants are very hard to take care of. One needs to learn how to trim and maintain one. Let me break it down. Chinese don't care about Japanese bonsai. They prefer money plants (no it doesn't grow real money nor is it worth a lot) or lucky bamboo and various flowering plants. Thais, Filipinos, Vietnamese, all have their own preferred trees and plants they consider part of their culture. None being a Japanese bonsai. Before you open your mouth and tell us, with all that wisdom, that some Japanese stole it, let me break the Japanese down for you. Japanese have too much pride and integrity to walk into a cultural center and steal a plant. It would be too shameful/embarrassing to do something so petty and get caught. Asians strive for a better future by working hard and not doing anything idiotic to jeopardize that future. Asian children are groomed to be better than their parents and are constantly reminded to do so with a higher education as a tool to achieve that. Which is why you rarely see a homeless Asian. Not saying there isn't that small % of Asians that turns to crime. But we wouldn't be stealing plants. That's for the nickel and diming crews that are just born losers. But I get you trying to deflect the blame onto Asians. Some groups are more highly represented than others in the media for committing most of the crimes here in the Bay Area.
