This is the thing about Phil. He could be a romantic, a poet, a rocker, a soul singer, a bluesman, a sensitive lover, the list goes on. So many bands are so one dimensional. They're either rockers or whatever and they straight jacketed as a result. It's like theyre set in concrete. But Phil was a chameleon and he never thought twice about stepping out of the leather jacket and studs image and being someone completely different. That's what made Thin Lizzy so good as a band, especially in their earlier days before the wretched drugs blunted his abilities. There's still a lot to come guys. Thank you for bringing them to a wider audience. They deserve it.

Well done to whoever chose these tracks. It's good to see someone reacting to this side of Thin Lizzy, because it's the ability to cover such a wide range of music that sets the band apart from the hard rock bands who followed in their wake. As someone who cares about lyrics, Dublin is my favourite because it's pure poetry set to music, it makes me nostalgic for a place I've never been. The acoustic guitars are by Eric Bell. He was arguably the most inventive and versatile of the Thin Lizzy guitar players, and the material he appears on is very different from what came later. Showdown came out in 1974, two years before Boz Scaggs took the US charts by storm with Lowdown (if you like this, you will also like that), which shows how attuned Phil Lynott was to what was going on musically. Darren Wharton played the piano on Fats, and Phil was adopting some of the vocal mannerisms of Louis Armstrong for the track. I tend to disagree with the idea that most metal guitar players can play anything. It's one thing to have the technique and the speed, but it's the phrasing that makes the difference, and not everyone who is used to playing on the beat can make the adjustment.

You hit the nail on the head - Lizzy were very versatile. Some of Phil Lynott's solo material was pure pop, on top of all of the rock, blues, funk and jazz. He was also a massively underrated bassist

THIS is a fantastic marathon! Fantastic song choices! Makes me realize how much I missed by having not bought the albums, and only knowing the "hits" (mostly)! Hi guy's I really enjoyed this.I'm Irish and have been a Lizzy fan since the 70's.I've seen them live many time's and they were the best gig's i've been to.Irish people do not call them Tin Lizzy except maybe parts of Dublin. I think Brian Downey is one of the most underrated drummer of all time.here are five more Lizzy song's if you're interested. Black boy's on the corner,Got to give it up,,Killer on the loose,Sugar Blues, and Running Back.i have another band that you probably have not heard ofand they are called Mama's boys, here are five track's from them.Needle in the groove,Runaway Dreams,Hard and Loud,Mama we're all crazee now and Crazy Daisy's house of dreams.

Saw Lizzy a couple of times, the last time on their farewell tour at the 1983 Reading Rock festival where they had all the musicians who ever played for them make an appearance on stage, which made things a touch crowded at times. Sykes, Moore and Robertson trying to share guitar duties was easier said than done.

Where to start! The versatility I guess. If someone who had never listened to Thin Lizzy were to listen to their self titled debut album and then listened to their last studio album "Thunder and Lightning" you would never guess they were by the same band. My favorite band, along with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Loved how you mentioned Iron Maiden and the Scorpions as similar, was just talking about that with a musician friend the other day. Thin Lizzy is criminally under exposed and underrated. They are the only band that I have listened to their entire discography(Maiden and Priest are close 2nd's)and I continue to jive on them to this day. Anyway, this was a first time experience for me,and it was awesome to see their music from a new perspective. Thank you!!!!!

Thin Lizzy's first album is the only one, I don't own. But I didn't find Dublin on it, only on "Beginnings", some special sampler series, where songs of the early phase of bands are put together. But it might be on a later edition with bonus material, same with the Tango, it's not on the original LP "Vagabonds ...". Both songs represent the beginning of Thin Lizzy, they show, that they not only rocked, on "Vagabonds .." are songs as The Rocker and Gonna creep up on you and of course Whiskey in the jar, a song, I expect everybody on the channel to know, the younger ones maybe only the Metallica cover. Showdown is the next example of "the other side of Lizzy", the same I can say about "Dancing ..", I would even call it a smash hit, being Top 20 in England and lift the album to #4 in the charts. Even though I own Renegade, I don't remember Fats ... because back in those days I liked the rocking Lizzy and didn't care so much for the "soft" Lizzy. Nowaydays I enjoy these songs and have to say thank you to Nick - the requester - for remembering us of the "other side of Lizzy" To Nick and Alexia I have to say, I can't remember having you seen so much fun, laught so much, GREAT SHOW 😃👍 #nicknlexrequest# CCR - Long as i can see the light - my earliest sax solo that I liked

Surely it is time for a Steely Dan Marathon. HIGHLY recommend FLORIDA ROOM, WEST OF HOLLYWOOD (one of their BEST and most underrated songs) and WALK BETWEEN THE RAINDROPS. All are very different...and, as usual, brilliantly composed, produced and presented.

Hi Guys, this is a brilliant marathon. The softer side of Thin Lizzy, which Phil Lynott went back to before he died when he recorded his 2 solo albums. There are a few up tempo tracks on them but they are not rock. There's orchestra & even a brass section on his last album simply called "The Phil Lynott Album" The other was called "Solo in Soho" and even had Mark Knopfler on guitar on one of the tracks "Kings Call" about the death of Elvis. There is a track he puts on both albums called "Yellow Pearl" and a compilation album goes by the same title. It was used in England as the theme tune to Top Of The Pops for many years. It's a brilliant disco track. [ there were 2 versions ...one mostly instrumental .. the Top of the Pops version ] The vocal version is the best one from "Solo in Soho" especially when he sings on echo "What we lack,...what we lack....what we lack" & the voice goes so much deeper. Love that part. Byeee Jim X

People kept referring to Thin Lizzy as their favorite band. I bought one of their releases and didn’t see it … UNTIL NOW ! I just need to dig deeper… what a wonderful marathon. When I was in 3rd year of college, I was paired in the dorm with an international student from Ireland and I thought for most of that year the the band name was “Tin Lizzy” 😂. He didn’t have any of his music with him so I unfortunately didn’t get exposed to them back them and missed out. You guys are great ! Thanks to the author of this marathon list too !

The name Thin Lizzy came from a robot character in The Dandy comic book called Tin Lizzie, which they adjusted to Thin Lizzy as a playful reference to the local Dublin accent, in which "thin" would be pronounced as "t'in".

I've collected all Thin Lizzy albums beginning of the 90's after listening to a ' best of' album called Dedication. The band is so diverse. Phil Lynott also relased 2 solo albums , 'Solo in Soho' from 1980 and ' The Phillip Lynott album from 1982. I enjoy those as well. Maybe more a ' poppy' style' but great songs. Maybe you know the song 'Old Town' from the 1982 album. That songs has been covered by a lot of artists. One of their heaviest albums is Maybe Thin Lizzy Live At the Reading Festival from 1983. If I'm well informed this was one of their last shows before the final farewell.

Well done Nick 😂! yes soooooo important that people realise that lizzy & Lynott tried continuously to explore their « sound » and genre. They are not just « Boys are back in town ». Although they excelled in the dueling guitars rock, there is so much more to their musical narrative. The record companies wanted more rock albums and success but Lynott wanted more (risking in doing so to alienate fans and dilute their musical identity) - so check out his solo albums and other collaborations. The irony of course is that their last studio album with John Sykes « Thunder & Lightning » is their hardest and one of their best - a very coherent album. cheers you guys for the joy you bring❤

The story goes that when Phil Lynott (bassist and singer) and Brian Downey (drummer) were at school together, one of their favourite comic strips was about a female robot named Tin Lizzy. In the local Dublin accent, words that start with "th" are pronounced like just T, so they reversed it and turned Tin Lizzy into Thin Lizzy.

Show me one more hard rock band that can pull this off. There are none. Shows Phil and the bands diversity. They could play anything. The piano solo on Fats, is then 20 year old Lizzy keyboard-player Darren Wharton. Just brilliant. And your observation on Phil’s phrasing; Ace producer Tony Visconti referred to Phil as the “Sinatra of rock”. He often had more in common with Sinatra and his crooner-friends when it comes to phrasing than his hard rock companions. So good observation. Phil Lynott had three books of poetry published. A real poet. His lyrics are on another level. Thanks for a great marathon.
