When I first heard Carouselambra, I was immediately blown away by its complexities. It's interesting to see that when being a teenager, one can be up to extremely picky on musical tastes (I was like that as well), but as one grows older, the tastes in different styles change and develop a less prejudiced pattern, i.e. you look at things that previously went in one ear and out the other and you find a new appreciation for them.

"In Through the Out Door" was certainly different. From what I've read, I believe Jimmy Page and John Bonham didn't exert as big an influence on this album because of their issues with their respective addictions. That forced John Paul Jones (ergo the heavy keyboard influence) and Robert Plant to do most of the heavy lifting on the album. "Carouselambra" is also my favorite off this album. There are even some great guitar parts on this tune.

LZ 'fans' that don't like it were really just not willing to see the band evolve. It was 1979 ffs, things were changing and they were, too. Yes, it's mostly JPJ & Plant who wrote it, and I love them for it. This song itself is great, have always loved it.

Presence is and always was a superb album, especially if you were into heavy and hard music. I bought Zeppelin IV in 75, & Zep II about six months later, and I eventually saved up, bought them all, deeply knew every song as they became part of my DNA. In Through The Outdoor was the album I anticipated for years, I wasn't crazy about In The Evening upon my first 9-10 listens, but I later thought it was good, but still not nearly as great as the chosen masterpiece you're critiquing. I painstakingly listened to the lyrics and wrote them all out, once I got hold of the actual lyrics and compared them, I probably got about 95% of the lyrics correct, but my version wasn't bad, haha. John Paul Jones is perhaps the most solid (stable and consistent) of the 25% of the superior Swanton four. As a bass player, he's among my favorite rock stars and musicians of all time. That said, John Bonham was the rarest of drummers where it literally was useless and a futile idea to keep Zeppelin going as an active band after he passed. BTW - nothing wrong with how you judged their music as a young teenager, but obtaining all of the recordings simultaneously can't compare to my slow and lustful purchase of each and every album all out of sequence. Just saying.

Robert Plant wrote the lyrics about the state of the band at the time when they were not all getting along. The lyrics ended up getting drowned out in the mix, maybe on purpose! Looking back on this song in an interview, Robert Plant said: "I thought parts of "Carouselambra" were good, especially the darker dirges that Pagey developed. And I rue it so much now, because the lyrics on "Carouselambra" were actually about that environment and that situation. The whole story of Led Zeppelin in its latter years is in that song... and I can't hear the words!"

This album is not to be ignored. In The Evening, Fool in The Rain, All My Love and I'm Gonna Crawl are certainly great tracks. Carouselambra has great instrumentals that make up for the vocals buried in the mix. Hot Dog and South Bound Saurez are fun but fall short of Led Zeppelin's potential. I would say that overall it is a great album even if it is below the others. This just shows how great Led Zeppelin was.

Much like you Nick, I didn't follow up with Zeppelin after Presence. It was not because I didn't like that album though, mainly because I never had the chance to hear In Through The Out Door. And then John died and that was that... So this was my first ever listen to 'Carouselambra' and I really enjoyed it. Reading the comments below has helped me understand why JPJ is so much to the fore, but what a musician to have in the band when others have issues. That being said, I thought the guitar parts were great as well, and John's drumming was typically epic. I do wish that the vocals were more upfront in the mix though. Thanks so much Great Scott, I am definitely going to listen to this album now, and I'm pretty sure I'll be buying it soon! Thanks Nick, it wasn't so bad after all!

I always found this song interesting, something musically new that anticipated the 80s. During my second LZ concert in Zurich in 1980, I read in the music press that LZ would play this masterpiece live in the USA in the fall... then things turned out completely differently. The album was recorded at ABBA's Polar Studios Stockholm. Legend has it that it was mainly JPJ and RP who pushed it forward; JP and JB “snuck into the studio at night to add their musical contributions.” I think that's what I hear in this complex song. “I'm Gonna Crawl” is a great closing blues song. All My Love/played live is a catchy ballad, of course with a deep meaning. "Fool In The Rain" seems to have become a "surf song" and US West Coast, catchy, but I'm missing something special, maybe the guitar is too much in the background and with a terrible fade-out (the same situation as the song “House”) of the saint). In his own words, JP had no feel for pop songs, so not enough time was invested in mixing and crafting.

Carouselambra is very near the top of the Led Zep list. Also tinged with sadness as John died shortly after it's release, that destroyed me. It was the first time I cried over the death of someone I didn't actually know in person. Also as a long time Led Zep fan at the time, I loved all the songs including Hotdog. In the Evening is fantastic as is South Bound Suarez. Funnily, I'm Gonna Crawl is my least favourite track, although it harks back somewhat to their earlier material, all of which I love.

I did not like In Through The Out Door first time I heard it in 1979, but as with all Led Zeppelin songs you gain a greater appreciation for the album 40 years later. Granted it's not as hard rocking as the previous 8, but it has some quality songs on it. Thought the packaging was strange for the vinyl too, It was wrapped in a brown paper bag, which at first glance turned you off to the album, you couldn't see anything but a brown paper bag. Then Bonzo dies from drinking too much. Was a real bad year for Zeppelin in 79. But as said, I do appreciate the album much more today then I ever did in the late 70-s and early 80's. Carouselambra it the last great song LZ ever made. Fun listen

These are some of Plants best lyrics and about as aggressive as he has written, though perhaps painful is more appropriate as he seemed to be rightfully hurt. Furthermore he is covering the most personal experience and a wide array of them as it were. I don't listen to this song enough but the lyrics are excellent. Plants voice was purposely hidden in the mix by Page due to these lyrics as they were critical of Page in particular (JPJ as well when he discusses them not showing up for his sons funeral where only he and Bonham attended, "Where was your word, where did you go? Where was your helping, where was your bow?")

Plant said that Page and Bonham checked out during the making of this album, leaving Jones and Plant to do a lot of the writing and arranging, Every song on this album has a dominant keyboard. The lyrics are Robert Plant telling Jimmy Page to get his act together and kick his addictions. Plant said he wrote them with a mystical backdrop so that Page wouldn't know they were about him. When you read the lyrics and think of it that way, it becomes clear.
