I always hate my favourite albums on the first listen. An album that i jam to straight away usually gets old fast. I love albums where every listen brings something new to the table. You're Dead! by flying lotus is one of those albums for me. It didn't make sense the first two listens, but those 3rd-6th listens are always magical with these albums. Like all of the pieces of the puzzle come together right before your eyes. The only other medium that works in a similar way to me is poetry, it's a lot like exploring a large room in the dark.

As an Odd Future fan since 2010, I didn’t care about Frank really. R&B or Soul music didn’t really move me as a teenager so I never cared about Frank or the Internet honestly. Fast forward to 2016 this hype of Frank dropping two albums in the same week break news and everyone who was a fan was going nuts. I listened to Blonde of course and it didn’t click with me. Didn’t understand what everyone was talking about. Although I was listening to and appreciating soul and R&B at the time finally. Thank you Erykah, D’Angelo, and Marvin! FYF 2017. Still the best year and best festival experience I had. Most of my favorite artists were performing and the vibe was just right. Frank Ocean of course was the headliner and I decided to go and see him because what the hell, right? I could’ve gone to see Sleep. But something was telling me,”You can see Sleep another time. Go and see Frank.” Figuratively speaking of course, I’m not implying that I have a voice in my head that I actually hear. Plus Frank was a rare performance to see I understood that. Sleep wasn’t. At least not anymore and I did catch them at one of their shows actually! Whatever, Blonde was kind of growing on me by that time anyway.... Bruh..... His performance was not only the best out of that year even though my main attractions were Björk, Tribe Called Quest, and Iggy Pop, but that intimate feeling of his gigantic set full of thousands of people, for some odd reason. That contrast made me understand what this artist is capable of. Not to mention his beautiful voice and his passionate way of delivering a good performance. His presence the first time he came up to the stage was unbelievable. Seeing him in the flesh and the visuals... Perfect. The aesthetic and his presence were amazing. The atmosphere..... I’m just rambling at this point. But the point I’m trying to make is Frank Ocean became my favorite artist of all time after seeing him live. I started to understand Blonde more and I related to everything he was saying and to this day I am still getting new perspectives off the album I hadn’t seen in the first place. And it’s not just Blonde, his entire discography and artistry moves me. I’ve gone thru phases of favorite artists and some don’t really last as long, but I still appreciate their music. Frank though, I still listen to all of his music to this day for the past two years and never get tired of hearing Nostalgia, Ultra, Channel Orange, Endless, Blonde, and all of his other unreleased rarities, and singles FRONT TO BACK. Never shuffle. Only did a few times only by accident. Yep Frank is special, and I for one respect his privacy, time, and the effort he puts in to his artistry and music. Thank you Frank, for getting me thru tough times. Your complete honesty and ambitious music was what I needed in those tough times.

Ocean makes you feel for something or someone that doesn't quite exist. Through his own story, he tells you something about yourself that you never realized you could reach and he let's you know that often times it's out of our control what we should and shouldn't feel. It's a bitter sweet feeling of the intangible things that we simply can't reach because often times we don't like to put our trust in things greater than ourselves and we leave ourselves alone in the dark until once again there's a larger will to live

It's honestly remarkable how well you put into words the feeling of listening to Blonde. I had this video pulled up for so long and I finally watched it. I can barely begin to explain in words how much of an impact Blonde has had in my life, and exactly how similar our situations were in listening to it. When I first heard it, I didn't think it was terrible but it wasn't amazing to me either. What I realize now is that I just wasn't ready for what it was about to give me at the time. Like you said, that feeling of it clicking to you is relatively universal. Once it finally "clicked" to me, it opened my eyes to what my Blonded life was. Thank you for such an incredible video friend. I'm sure I will return to this as time goes on.

I couldn't agree with you more. Frank Ocean has a way of making you attach nostalgic emotions to certain songs in his albums. Channel Orange was like that for me 100%. That f**KING album is a masterpiece and love it. I could put that album on any time and just fall back into the nostalgic vibes of those songs. Whenever I listen to certain songs from that album . . . it just takes me back to my early college days of summer, where I would chill and play some Majora's Mask, haha. This is my personal example, but I'm sure certain songs from that album has taken other people back to some event in their past that they treasure as well. Also, idk If I'm the only one who does this, but I tend to attach certain visual pictures (kinda like a movie in my brain lol) in my head to alot of the songs of Channel Orange. For example, the last song of album, "End/Golden Girl" , at the beginning of the song I picture in my head a couple just getting out of their car at night time and arguring about their relationship issues. One of the spouses storms into their house and then later turns on the radio to play Golden Girl. Then when I think of Golden Girl, I imagine Frank and this island girl running in the bright sun and enjoying the tropical island in bliss. I know this may sound strange and weird, but that's what I personally feel when I hear one of Frank's songs and how I tend to connect to some of his songs. The fact he caused this type of response to me by his songs, I think really shows just how amazing of an artist he truly is.

first time I listened to blonde was after a friend recommended it to me. it was like 2am so the pinnacle of sad boi hours and I decided to give it a try after watching a visual that someone had made with some scenes from ghibli movies and the Akira movie which the same friend had sent into the group chat. I listened to the entire album, the first time standing up in the pitch black in my bedroom. This first listen felt separate to all the other times as I was experiencing purely the sound of it, how it made me feel etc etc as opposed to the lyrics and such. my second listen which took place immediately after the first (one of many) I was lying in my bed for, face down in my pillow. this time I had become acquainted with each track to a degree and I was receiving an entirely different experience purely from the lyrics. shit the feeling it gave me was like no other and I felt like I was experiencing his same experiences. every track made me feel a certain way and each track painted a detailed picture in my head. I felt a weird sense of relatability which is weird considering I share like none of his experiences but I guess I have felt similar ways before and I think that's the beauty of art, how it can give someone else a glimpse into the thoughts and life of another. I proceeded to listen to the album many more times that night back to back and eventually fell asleep to it. no other album or piece of music or art has made me feel that way and I wish I could experience listening to it for the first time again.
