The closest thing I’ve had to a sausage roll here in America was a thing that labeled “sausage roll” but was, far as I could tell, just a hotdog stuffed into a bit of bread, that I’d gotten out of a refrigerated vending machine at work and had to pop it in the microwave for a bit to warm up enough to eat. Very disappointing. Half the reason I’d love to visit the UK someday is to try the food; I considered online ordering once, but import fees are murder for anything more than a few ounces… on one site, I put in my cart just a few things - a 6-pack of Irn Bru, a 2L of Lilt, a bag of Mackie’s, some Walker’s shortbread, and a box of Yorkshire tea (to go with the shortbread), and the final cost was about $35, with shipping being twice as much as the order! Insane! If not for the fact a friend in Blackpool was able to get at least some of it from her local shop and mail it herself, I’d never have gotten to try anything at all! (By far you folks have the superior chocolate and jam and such - I fell in love with Tunnock’s teacakes and lemon curd on toast and making sandwiches from sharp cheddar and Branston Pickle, but I still haven’t gotten to try Irn Bru, dammit!)

We have inspections in New Jersey, but they’re free and if you don’t pass, you have 30 days to get it fixed and reinspected. As far as the ingredients in haggis, the use of lungs is banned due to the possibility of contamination during the slaughtering process that can possibly cause food borne illness.

In America in some states we have what they call state inspection. Where either approved garages or state facilities inspect your car to make sure it is safe. BUT if it fails, you get your car back and still drive it. If it passes you get a sticker on the windshield to show it passed. If you are driving without the stickers you an be pulled over and ticketed. Taco Bell is decent. But not a authentic in any way shape or form. We have greggs here in PA, but it’s a furniture store. There is a Scottish Bakery not too far from me called Ackroyd's, and they make homemade Sausage Rolls, Bridies, Meat Pies, Pasties (which are hugely popular here in Michigan, they're kind of like a meat pie but also include veggies,) pork pies, Shepherd's Pies, breakfast pies, and more. In southwest Louisiana (USA) in areas populated by Cajun people ( descendants of Nova Scotia French Acadians who were expelled by the British and whose families resettled In Louisiana). there are a few local butchers that produce a sort of black pudding in a sausage casing - and a version without the blood is available all over . It’s called Boudin [BOO-Daa] it’s made with seasoned ground pork and rice.. Another less common item is a cooked pig stomach stuffed with seasoned ground pork( traditionally made with offal) , trussed and baked- that one is called Stuffed Chaudin or Ponce.

MOT: we have them. Our cars have to pass a road safety inspection once a year. Rules for passing inspection vary from state to state but here in MA, they check the safety equipment (lights, turn signals, horn, seat belts, etc.) check under the car for rust and/or damage, and if your car is newer than 15 years old, it has to pass an emissions test. If the car is 15 years old or older, it no longer has to pass the emissions test. The inspection and sticker costs $37; if there's anything wrong, they slap a "REJECTION" sticker on your car and you have X number of days to get it fixed and re-inspected. You can get it fixed however you want, at whatever garage you want, or fix it yourself, as long as it gets fixed so the car will pass inspection it's fine. And I want those shortbread bites. I want them right now. Nay, I NEED THEM.

In the US, we're very fond of holding what _we_ take for haggis in low regard, and we use this to contribute to this stereotype we tend to have of Scotland as a land of uncultured brutes who universally wear plaid kilts and play bagpipes. We tend to grow fond of this image and I suspect, deep down, it makes us resistant to the notion that the _actual_ ingredients of haggis are _illegal_ here.
@cs5384
@cs5384 2 жыл бұрын
Well it's banned because sheep's lung can carry a LOT of bacteria and it would be required to inspect every shipment according to the FDA. We ban a lot of stuff here, but most countries ban something. At least they're not so addled they ban any GMO food like soybeans in half of Europe thanks to fearmongering. From what I've heard Canada just recently lifted their ban on offal too. We have haggis here without that one ingredient that makes up less than 15% of the product. I can't imagine a food that is improved by adding a lung, but I guess to each their own!

4:50 if you liked the sausage roll, you would love kolaches ( Look up kolache factory and click on menu for visuals.). In Texas, kolaches are about 4 inches long, about an inch in circumference, and the varieties are: 1) baked with a sausage inside 2) add cheese to the sausage and 3) a jalapeno (spicy pepper) is next to the sausage and cheese. My mother's old recipe, make biscuit mix (flour, baking soda, milk and shortening) by hand and then wrap that around a prebaked sausage patty and bake. Kolaches are an excellent addition to a breakfast of scrambled eggs and fried potatoes. Look up kolache factory and click on menu for visuals.

I was in Glasgow and Edinburgh in October. Pretty sure there was supposed to also be a Taco Bell in Edinburgh not far off Princes Street. I scoped it out on a map in case of emergency, but my rule was, with the exception of trying out the breakfast roll (with brown sauce - it was so good!) at McDonald's, I wouldn't buy chain food I could get in the States. That also meant Nando's was right out for me. (I ended up eating a lot of "Meal Deals" - speaking of things the U.S. needs to adopt - from like Sainsburys Local and Tesco Express.) As for Taco Bell... you can try it, but it's not gonna change your life, I don't think. It's just okay. Like others have been saying, here it's considered post-partying drunk food. I got a burrito the night before I left from a Mexican* joint on Grassmarket, and it wasn't perfect, but it wasn't actually terrible. They were out of some ingredients and the "Mexican beans" weren't like any beans I've ever had in a burrito, but the flavors were pretty much there. *I got into Mexican food working with my bestie for her parents at the Mexican food court joint they ran at the local mall one summer in college. My bestie's dad is 1st generation Mexican American and her mum was from Prestwick. My bestie and I, when we get together, tend to default to seeking out non-chain authentic Mexican restaurants, because they truly usually are the best.

Not many U.K. chains have made it here that I'm aware. Greg's & Nando's are the most mentioned places from like U.K., Australia, South Africa... If they exist here, they are likely deep into NYC or LA or something not easily accessible or affordable for most. I'm not sure if Taco Bell will be any different over there. I'm in Wisconsin. Never heard of Gregg's. Some love Taco Bell, some hate it. But it's good tasting food that is pretty cheap. They have a Dollar menu, and you can eat your fill with 2 or 3 things off the Dollar menu. It is owned by Pepsi, so you can only get Pepsi, Mountain Dew and other Pepsi products to drink.

Hello Wee_Scottish_Lass. No Gregg's here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada but would love to have one. We once had a Mark's and Spencer's until it went belly up. The local But 'N'Ben Scottish Bakery on Kingston Road, Pickering, Ontario has all things British including snacks, IRN-BRU, and puddings.

I gotta say as a Canadian guy from North Hatley Montreal now living in the US I hear the universal healthcare thing a lot but a lot of people seem to think it means free healthcare but that isn't the case. The taxes in Canada are much higher than they are here in the United States for a reason. Maybe the quality of healthcare you get in the UK is better than it is in Canada I wouldn't know myself personally. But even in Canada people who pay for their own personal insurance are taken better care of than someone using the nationalized healthcare system. The waiting can sometimes be very long before you can see a doctor and even longer if you need a specialist. It's very romanticized but the reality of it is that is in inefficient and of lower quality at least in Canada.

Definitely hit up Taco Bell if you can! Just bare in mind, it's not actual Mexican food and it's not generally the highest quality of food. It's still good though! I recommend the Cheesy Gordita Crunch and Chalupa Supreme

That food all looked yummy! We do have something similar to a sausage roll, it's called a corndog. I look forward to trying some of these treats you showcased. I'm planning my trip to UK/Scotland in 2023.

Apart from the similarity of meat being encased in something, they are completely different. Sausage rolls are sausage meat encased in puff pastry and baked, corn dogs are essentially a hot dog encased in cornmeal batter and deep fried. Enjoy your trip, make sure you try deep fried pizza!

@@TheJimtanker Hike up Arthurs seat, it has the best views of the city. Walk through the old town and the Royal Mile, find the statue of Greyfriars Bobby (look up the story), if you're into Harry Potter go to The Elephant House, it's where JK Rowling wrote. Check out the castle of course, there's also a 2nd castle called Blackness Castle it's around 30mins outside the city and pretty close to it is Linlithgow Palace where Mary Queen of Scots was born...so much to do in and around Edinburgh, I took my American hubby there in 2019 and he was amazed by it all, you will love it :)

My favorite thing at taco bell is the cheesy gordita crunch. Here in USA I found a few websites that will ship sausage rolls, beef and cheese pies, steak and kidney pies, Cornish pasties, etc right to my door, and was super excited when I got a 12 pack of irnbru from amazon

In Oklahoma we had a "Safety Inspection" for years on our cars, but people would half-ass it, not do it, and the cops weren't stopping people for it. No one would pay the fines, and it just became a real issue. They later passed laws requiring everyone to carry liability insurance, and we all do that, so that if something happens to another because of our negligence, it will be covered. The cops will stop you for a broken head light or tail light.

Hey, we have sausage rolls in the States. Unfortunately the nearest pie shop to me that has them is about an hour away. Worth the trip because they also sell them frozen, so we stock up and fill up the freezer. That, and pasties, and chicken pies.

We definitely need Irnbru in America. I'm very curious about what it tastes like. We do have sausages wrapped in dough though. And pizza is like tits: Even the bad ones are still pretty good. And you ask about what kinds of shops and things have made it over here, but Scotland's impact on America runs much deeper than that. 2/3 of our founding fathers were Scottish. So many Scottish people settled in the South, we still have Highland festivals. Most of the ghost stories and legends in the South were heavily influenced by Scottish lore. You have kilts, bagpipes, and haggis. We have overalls, banjos, and chitlins. If you're asking which country has had the bigger impact on the other, you win in a landslide.

Greggs is champion for quick and delicious snacks. We don't have anything like them over here that's fit for human consumption. I'm also a great fan of Piemaker in Edinburgh but that's a one-off so it can't be compared. Taco Bell is shite! America is very fortunate to have many good authentic taquerias. In my little village here in California we have at least 10 for a population of 12000! I have a little insider trick for you at 5 Guys - take a small paper bag with you (or eat your burger and use the bag they gave you) and load it up with the peanuts to takeaway. They're perfectly fine with it as long as you're not trying to take a grocery bag full. Great snack for later while you're watching Naruto...

We've actually got quite a bit of UK stuff. But a lot of it is regional. I can buy Irn Bru at Publix (grocery) but haven't seen it outside of Florida & North Carolina. But people can also buy it on Amazon. We don't have Nandos, but I can get the peri peri hotsauce in the shops state side. We've also got bounty bars, aro bars, squash, hob nobs, Weetabix, Walker's shortbread. There are heaps more of items but off the top of my head, I'm blanking. But hey, I've just got home from work and I'm in need of tea 😂

What a tiny wee bit of snow :) If I could post a photo here I'd show you a 40cm snowfall. Also you're in Scotland - not Britain! In Canada we have many shops that sell bakery fresh foods like steak and kidney pie and strawberry pastry sweets (I don't know the name but I've had them in Scotland). OH Tattie scones! Yum! Taco Bell is not really tacos - it's a fast food based on real tacos. After the pandemic - come to Canada!

Deffinitely worth a watch. I have to say though with the exception of Greggs, Real Haggis and Millionaire's short bread, we in the States have better food as long as you avoid most of the fast food restaurants. It's not that the U.S.A is better than Brittain, it's just that we have more people from different cultures all over the world and we have more land to grow crops etc. One thing we do need is for you to continue making videos as long as you enjoy making them. Slainte.

Just a personal favorite, but when I go to Taco Bell, you can order a 5 layer burrito without sour cream. Technically making it a 4 layer burrito, but I'm not a fan of cream that went bad so I don't want it on my food, but yea. You can ask for them to add or delete items from your order and they can to it.
