The sad part is that, in Azula’s mind, Mai’s last words to her were exactly how she thought her own mother felt; “I love Zuko more than I fear you”

It's so important to remember that Tai Lee joined up with Azula under duress. Like, when you spend a season and a half with Tai Lee and Mai being Azula's ride-or-die lackeys, it's easy to forget that they're essentially only there because Azula is fucking terrifying.
@PopeDuwang

Exactly. At first Tai Lee declined her offer to join her until she made her paradise (The Circus) a living hell. With Mai, she was bored so she joined willingly. Mai being there likely helped give Tai Lee courage during her time with them so when she saw her betray Azula, it gave her the courage to finally stand up against her.

Yep, both girls were forced into being her support unit. Of course there were something like "Traditions etc etc" with both being from what you can call "Elite Warriors/Bodyguards" lineages that always worked together with Fire Lord dynasty... But both agreed to working with Azula because they were afraid of what she can do to them or their families if they refuse. No wonder they betray Azula - they never were there because of loyalty to her anyway.

Now that we're finally to this episode, I can tell you my personal theory about Mai and Ty Lee. There are three major episodes to keep in mind. Return to Omashu, Zuko Alone, and The Beach. Let's go back to The Beach. Specifically, Mai's speech. In it she mentions how she couldn't speak unless spoken to, had to stay out of trouble and how they had her father's political career to think about. Most people think "controlling mother" and leave it at that, even Azula. But read between the lines there. And think about her father's political career. If her father was in politics that means he had to at least be conscientious of the supreme political figure in the land, the Fire Lord. What do you think would happen if the Fire Lord learned that some bureaucrat's daughter "insulted" his daughter/granddaughter? I don't think being Azula's friend was ever Mai's choice. I think she was forced into it. By Azula and by her own parents. I can almost imagine Mai coming home crying about Azula pushing her into the ground and being told "Hush, dear, we'll buy you a toy if you don't say anything to the Fire Lord's people." We even see a bit of it in Zuko Alone during the flashback. Remember Azula pushed Ty Lee down when she did gymnastics better than Azula and went out of her way to pick on Mai and her crush on Zuko. In Return to Omashu, remember how Azula tormented Ty Lee when she refused to join the mission. Ty Lee ended up giving her sweet Ty Lee interpretation of events, but it's clear she knew Azula wasn't taking the rejection well and she was being forced to join. When they go to meet Mai, one of the first things Mai comments on is how Ty Lee had joined the circus (something Azula apparently didn't know). After Ty Lee explaining that "Azula called a little louder" Mai eagerly joins the mission, arguably because she knew there was no point in resisting. Ty Lee and Mai were never friends with Azula. They each adopted ways to deal with Azula to minimize the bullying. Ty Lee adopted a super happy and complementary persona as Azula had no reason to bully someone who always gave exaggerated praise. Mai adopted a more aloof and nonreactive persona as bullying someone who doesn't react is no fun. And it's even implied more than once that Azula doesn't treat them that great. ("I don't care how much lightning she wants to shoot at me. I am not jumping in that wall sludge juice.") This is why Mai turned on Azula. She had a positive relationship with Zuko as opposed to the dysfunctional one she had with Azula. And Ty Lee when placed in a position where she could watch her friend, who just stood up to Azula, get hurt or even killed, she choose her friend. That's what happened in this scene. Like you said. This show has great character writing.

@@infamouse9263 Thank you, but I just realized I forgot one major observation. Which is annoying because it's one of the cornerstones of my theory. When Mai screams "Leave me alone" we can only see her. But a moment later, we get a look at where everyone was at the time. Zuko was to her left, closer to the water. Ty Lee was to her right. And Azula was directly across from her. And where was Mai looking? Directly in front of herself. Mai was screaming at Azula. She expressed herself as everyone said to scream at Azula. @@takonaegi2967I feel like, more even than Mai, Ty Lee's betrayal messed up Azula. All this time she has controlled and manipulated people around her, her friends most of all. Now, Mai betraying her was shocking, but at least there was an explanation attached where she made clear that she loved Zuko too much. Okay, that sucks, but is somewhat understandable, she had the hots on him, just increase the fear factor. But Ty Lee? Ty Lee had no stakes in Zuko. And yet she chose Mai over Azula. And I doubt there was any scenario in which Azula saw that happening. This was the first time she was in control of a situation, only to lose said control in an instant. This is like an earthquake to her convictions, which will very soon be followed by Ozai relegating her to a backrole while stealing all of the glory for himself, which is the first time where she realizes she's not different from Zuko in the eyes of her father. Those 2 punches are what drive her to madness in the finale.

I have to say I LOOOOOVE Ty Lee's betrayal, because it speaks so much about her character She doesnt think much about the big picture, her universe is the world she lives in, her friends, her passion, her feeling and the place she's in at the moment. She never had any problem with any evil mission they were in because she was with her friends and thats the only thing thta matters to her She ONLY "betrayed" Azula cause she knew she was gonna kill/badly hurt Mai, and thats something she cant let happen If Mei was the more powerful one and she was baout to hurt Azula, Ty Lee would have done the same to Mai Of course she knew they had to run immediately cause Azula was not gonna take that, but she didnt have any hate towards her, she just wantwd to prevent one of her friends hurting another

With the Azula/Mai thing, it’s not only that she chose Zuko over Azula, but the words used. “I *love* Zuko more than I *fear* you.” Her whole life, she’s been taught that the only reliable way to control people, and make them trustworthy, is to make them fear you. Thus she bases her only friendships (Mai and Ty Lee) on that foundation. They fear her first and foremost. Even if they do care about her, it’s secondary to following her out of fear. Thus, for Mai to admit that she still does fear Azula, but betrayed her anyway, because she *loves* Zuko, throws in her face that her entire way of viewing relationships is wrong. If Mai and Ty Lee still betray her despite fearing her, then that means fear isn’t the best way to establish a relationship. It’s one of the reasons she completely falls apart. She based her entire social viewpoint on that fundamental premise. She can’t get out of it, she breaks down in her hallucinations in the mirror because the Spector of her mother says “you use fear to control people” and Azula tries to reaffirm her taught belief. “Fear is the only reliable way, trust/love is for fools”. But she knows that’s not true, hence why her hallucination says “No, I love you Azula” She can’t handle it, so instead (spoilers for the comics) she constructs a delusion, where instead of facing the fact her social identity was wrong, she believes that her mother secretly made everyone not fear her anymore. That everyone around her is an “agent” of her mother in a sense. Her mother is at the root of all her pathologies. Azula is convinced that her mother did not love her, so it’s one of the reasons she rejects love as weakness and flimsy and not reliable, because her mother neglected her emotionally. It’s a really tragic story. People often forget that Azula is only 14. She’s a child, barely a teenager. Yet she’s had all this enormous pressure to be perfect, and to emulate Ozai. She repressed entire aspects of herself that weren’t in line with Ozai’s image. And it’s heavily implied that Ozai physically abused both children, people only focus on Zuko when talking about it. But there’s no reason to not also assume he did it to Azula as well. She was just better at conforming to Ozai’s image. Frankly, because Azula had no one else. Her mother chose Zuko over her, blatantly. She would lay awake at night, listening to her mother tuck Zuko in, and read him stories. And she’d wait for her to come and do the same for Azula, yet her mother would just walk by her room without even saying goodnight. It’s instances like these that piled up, and made Azula grip onto Ozai for a sense of validation. And the more she did that, the more of Ozai’s immoral nature came out in Azula (as she’s emulating the behaviour that gets her affirmation from her only active parent). And as more Ozai comes out in Azula, the more her mother pulls back and neglects her, and thus the more stringent Azula becomes in being Ozai’s perfect heir. A vicious cycle. Azula had no mother to instil compassion or reward moral behaviours. In fact her mother actively told her she was a monster and basically irredeemable. Zuko got to have Iroh, the literal most wise and patient mentor for three entire years to guide him. Azula was left completely alone with her monster father, moulding her into a perfect weapon, pouring poison into her. Everyone chose Zuko over her. Zuko got so many chances and help. Azula was basically set up to fail. And you can see at the end of the show, her one final thread of being her father’s perfect child is cut. He leaves her behind, and she shots at him for the first time ever. “You can’t treat me like Zuko!” She can’t help but exclaim that. Because how is it fair that she has sacraficed so much, and dealt with all of the things I’ve just listed, and she doesn’t even get the validation and affirmation from her father that she worked for, and the only thing keeping her tethered? Thus she rapidly falls apart as the only foundations of her identity crumble. Thus after the Agni Kai, where she sees Zuko beat her in one of the only things she held on to, her prodigy status over him, she just breaks. Everything is taken from her. In her view, she lost everything and Zuko got it all, while Zuko was the “failure” and she stayed and did everything expected of her. No one came back for her. No one stayed by her. Everyone betrayer or abandoned her, or chose Zuko over her. Yet in canon she’s shipped off to an asylum and drugged and put in restraints 24/7. At 14/15 years old. She was a traumatised, damaged *child* who deserved her family to give her a second chance and help her see what true family is without Ozai being over her. Yet they leave her in that asylum for years. It’s a sad ending. Personally I don’t really like the ending at all, especially as the comics go on in canon. Azula’s fall is a perfect setup for a redemption arc. Azula is such a compelling character as she’s a genius, and a prodigy in fighting/bending. Her whole character is that she’s hyper competent and smart. Seeing her break, but pull herself back up stronger than before, would have been an amazing story. (There’s many great fanfics that do this btw! One amazing one is ‘Azula and The Rings of Accordance’ by the way!) But in canon, they just keep Azula as a complete unhinged psycho who’s only purpose is to help the male character (Zuko) progress. Any true development for Azula is either not a priority in the story or completely left out. It sucks. Azula is by far my favourite character in ATLA. And seeing her go from amazing and compelling to… honestly kind of bad quality, is heartbreaking. Funnily enough, my favourite Korra character is Kuvira, another character I feel like the writers completely bungled.

So when Sokka tells him the son of the worst enemy Hakoda has ever faced is on their side he accepts it absolutely. Because if Sokka trusts Zuko with his life, then Hakoda will trust Zuko with his life and the lives of 5 other men. Now that he is doing it differently (thanks to the Dragons), he isn't. In fact, his movements are much calmer & more relaxed. Or during the BEST scene in the series (Mai's confrontation with Azula) notice Azula's hands showed she was going to KILL Mai! (using the LIGHTNING technique!) One of the BEST episodes of the series! With the BEST SURPRISE twist of the entire show! (go Ty Lee!) NO ONE saw THAT coming! Not anyone watching the show, and not anyone IN the show! The Warden doesnt get enough props for literally _ordering_ his subordinates to kill him along with the escapees. Dudes an asshole, but _defintely_ a professional. Only other wardens in fiction who holds a candle to him in terms of dedication to the job are Magellan & Hannyabal from One Piece

This is the best two-parter of the series. These are probably some of my favorite episodes overall. Mai and Ty Lee GANG!! Also when this was airing in ~2007, a lot of this evil prison shit really rang close to home in America.

Let's get one thing straight: Azula is not "a people person". A people person gets along well with people. They can put you at ease, lift your spirits, or give good advise. Azula is not that. What she is is a manipulator. She knows how people work, what makes them tick. She's the kind of person who can tell in an instant whether somebody is lying or not. That's how she knew that guard wasn't a traitor. But Azula is terrifying. People are never "at ease" with her around. That's why her "friends" betrayed her in the end.

Hakoda's lucky he's not a Bender. They'd have something much less humane in store for him. Or possibly an execution by incineration. It's a good thing he won't have to worry about long term incarceration, though he doesn't know that. In fairness, the last time Hakoda saw Sokka was briefly during the invasion, when things were a little chaotic and they didn't spend too much time together. The last time before that was when Sokka hadn't even hit puberty yet and was left behind to watch the village. The Warden is a typical archetype, but he's handled well. Hakoda might also be thinking of how to drive a wedge into the Fire Nation with a civil war. But he trusts that Sokka can vouch for Zuko being on their side for now. Zuko is a traitor in his country's eyes. Of course a loyal by the book guard would want to bad mouth the treasonous ex-prince. Also being able to lord power over someone who could have previously killed a career with an offhand comment is pretty plausible too. I can't entirely blame Mai for being mad. Still, I can't say I envy Zuko being in a prison run by his ex's uncle. I get Zuko leaving a letter because he was in a hurry and explaining why you're leaving all you have behind is not a quick conversation. It's only betrayal if you fail and/or the history books are unflattering. Yeah, that praise for AOT on microexpressions and in general is probably going to age like milk. Nah, the origin of the shapeshifting impostor is more likely John Carpenter's The Thing. A very nasty shapeshifter that can infect and assimilate. The more monstrous stuff in Among Us is in keeping with The Thing. If you go looking, it's a very gory movie. Also, don't watch the Prequel. Mind you, this is all second hand from someone else who actually likes to watch horror movies. To quote one Michael Weston, "when you're the Spy Hunter, the spy is whoever you say it is." Burn Notice was such a fun show. You expected a wrinkle? He she is! "Because I'm a people person." Sure you are. "That's it?" Apparently! They don't have enough cooler cells for all of them! They can't kill them all! WOOOOO! PUNCH THAT GUY WWHO STOLE MY LUNCH INSTEAD OF THE GUARD WHO CLUBBED ME! Suki may not be actual royalty (though Sokka is arguably [penny] prince adjacent as the de facto heir to running the village), but she is awesome. Azula can only make short boosted leaps with her fire. She can't fly proper. As shown by her needing the cuffs to ride the cable. Azula is many terrible things, but I will never deny her talent and power. Azula surprised. I'll just add that one to the file. With Mai helping, this is almost like a distorted double date. And Sokka's dad is the Chaperone. Remember back in the The Drill how Mai would rather risk Azula's anger than getting in the waste pump? Man, I've been waiting eagerly to see your reaction to Azula trying to handle her miscalculations about people and the consequences of strong arming Ty Lee into her squad. Azula was preparing a lightning strike, a kill shot. All of this is going into the "Azula isn't as much as she though she was" file. They left in a war balloon and came back in the much meaner successor. They helped humble and humiliate Azula. They broke the reputation of the Boiling Rock. They brought back 2 capable warriors and field commanders. This was a very successful day. Given that this was Azula's war zeppelin, there's probably some very choice cuts of tasty animals. Rank doth hath privileges. As does looting enemy commanders. And options for petty psy ops. Like taking her spare armors and putting graffiti on them for her to find. Reading any journal entries for intel and mocking....

One thing I'll say, is that I still believe that Tai Lee does actually care about Azula. It just always seemed to me that she attacked Azula there because it was the only way she could see to keep both of them from dying. Well, that, and that she was acting more on instinct than any conscious decision. I mean, you can see the confusion on her face as Azula goes down.

azula was fairly mercyful here, i dont think its normal to just lock up someone that assaulted a memeber of the imperial family and aided a traitor. seems like someplace like the firenation would normaly have death penalty for that.
