Yeah, I hate when shows try to push the message that you HAVE to forgive someone at fault. You really don't and in fact, forgiveness is something that the person at fault has to earn at the very least. If forgiveness is one-side, then it feels it's just a self-righteous act.

I think one of his realizations is just how composed she’s really been through everything once they met. That this whole time she had the potential to wield this terrifying amount of power and she’s chosen not to use it, to have never used it on him. He’s seeing what it takes for her to break the way he was broken and had for a long time kept breaking himself to get more powerful as a bender. He’s seeing that self destruction from the outside but he’s trying to be the person he needed to this group. He was trying to be his uncle to do it but he can only do it with what he’s learned. I think he also sees all he can do at that point instead of trying to hold her back, to let her go until she pulls herself back and then be there for whatever happens.

Honestly the coolest thing about that last scene between Zuko and Aang is that it gives you believable stakes for the finale. Like, its not a spoiler that Aang will win. This is a kids show, the good guys have to win. But with that question, it isn't about whether Aang CAN win. It's about the price he's willing/required to pay in order for that victory to happen, and what that will do to him, and how he thus deals with the situation. It's not about "Can he defeat Ozai?" it's about "What will he have to sacrifice to defeat Ozai?" Which hits way harder for me, because I can actually believe the show that there is something actually at stake here that the group could loose, all while still "winning" overall.

I believe there's a theory that because of Hama's escape the fire nation probably decided to just kill on sight when it comes to water benders. (I heard about this from an avatar fan channel, it might be from one of the comics so possible minor spoiler for the avatar comics below) Apparently their dad traveled around for a bit to try and find a master for Katara but didnt find anyone, unfortunately this is probably how the fire nation discovered that there was a water bender in the southern tribe.
@xT3ALxPACMANx Жыл бұрын
I heavily disagree with this theory. The timing doesn't add up for one, but also, I think this was more about an individuals actions vs it being an SOP within the fire nation if that makes sense. As for the source, I don't believe the father would travel the world to find a waterbending master for his 4 year old daughter. Not to mention in order to do that he would have to visit the North pole and there is zero evidence to assume that imo

Love that Zuko channels Uncle Iroh here, in that he's not trying to tell Katara outright what she should do-- he just goes "I know this is important to you, and I'll be here to back you up while you face it, but it's 100% your choice how you handle it." I also think one of the reasons that Katara pins the emotions of losing her mother onto Zuko so much is the fact that he took her mother's necklace after she lost it-- that last piece of her mom she had left was taken from her and waved in her face, and she made subconscious connections. (That, and of course the subconscious connections between her family and Aang, since she very deeply considers him her family-- we saw that come out in episode 1 when she lashed out at her dad.) There's just a lot of really subtle, unspoken things about character motives that make perfect sense. The writers are brilliant.

I was taken to the principal's office, my dad came to school, I got told off in the office, but then dad took me out early and got me ice cream. 7:19 Big oof. Zuko has that coming for a long time and Katara finally just let it rip. She was even willing to use the spirit water on Zuko only to have him nearly murder her man. That resentment has been festering and it hits when the writers finally bring it to the front. 13:23 Yikes. They didn't have to go there but they did. She's so deep in her feelings she's saying all kinds of hurtful things to everyone, not just Zuko. You can tell she immediately regretted it with how hurt Sokka looked but she's too angry and single-minded to let it show. 20:17 Okay. If the writers didn't get the point across before they're really hammering it home with this one. After being forced to use Blood Bending back in Book 2 Katara broke down in tears at the idea that she is capable of doing something so monstrous to another person. Here she didn't hesitate to use a technique she considers pure evil against the man she thinks took her mother. Even Zuko looks at her in shock. This episode the writers went all in on Katara's descent into rage and hatred. They did an incredible job with her character here and really sell it. This is peak writing.

I got a stern talking to by the teacher, the racist got a week long suspension. One of the little details I like in this is the heavy implication that Katara already met and fought the person responsible for the sudden change in the orders of the Fire Nation soldiers to stop trying to take waterbenders prisoner because they were too dangerous to risk leaving alive (who thus did play a role in the death of Katara's mother, despite being as oblivious to all the details as the officer who wrote the new orders and the soldiers who didn't understand yet obeyed them). The person who went through a great deal of privation to get the chance to escape from a legitimately torturous custody - and when she did, didn't give a thought to either rescuing anybody else or leaving any of her captors alive. Which is certainly understandable and excusable, and might even have been acceptable in the long run... if that decision hadn't had clear consequences that she'd decided weren't any of her business.

Most shows or stories have the person who was wronged forgive the one who wronged them. The way I see it, Katara not killing the guy was along the lines of ”He’s not worth it.” And her not forgiving him makes sense. Still she got her closure, and that’s what matters Speaking of stories where the forgiveness happens, I have a personal favorite. A man who’s family was killed by an evil tyrant forgives the tyrant in question…. Okay, that sounds stupid, but let’s just say that there was more to it than that. Much much more.

When she and Zuko were in captivity together in Ba Sing Se, she outright said that she'd been through worse than anyone else, as if she's the only one to have lost a loved one to the Fire Nation. And what she said to Sokka in this episode was just vile, no matter how upset she was. At the very least, we could have seen her apologise to him for it

I can empathize with your mother's stance, but as a minority, I would have done the same without question, civility be damned.

Zuko's realization that Katara could've ended him at any time is one of my favorite "blink and you'll miss it" moments. But he instantly rolls with it.

30:40 I, too, did lash out at bullies when I was a teenager. We aren't better because of that, we are weaker. Obviously we can't be blamed, but we shouldn't think "that was the right thing to do": a justified slip-up is still a slip-up. The best way to impact that type of people isn't to hurt them and increase their hostility... rather, it's having the strength to plant a seed of potential remorse and doubt in their conscience by being the better person.

One thing I thought about. The captain’s whole “I’m not taking prisoners today.” Line. Katara’s mother would have been the first Waterbender capture since Hama. Do you think it was Hama’s escape that caused the Firenation to be like “yeah, no more taking them alive anymore. They’ve adapted.”

When you paused on giving in to your rage “unless…” I legitimately thought you were gonna say “unless you’re a barbarian”, I just have DND on the brain this morning 😅 but no, we’re all proud of Katara. She didn’t have to kill him. She wanted to, but that would’ve changed her to her core. She also didn’t have to forgive him like Aang said though either. Some things can’t be forgiven.

I share Katara's pain even though I haven't lost my mother my friend from middle school urged me to leave when she and her boyfriend were having an argument that resulted in her getting a black eye and a slap across the face, guilt quickly turned my sadness into anger and I went to the guy and started rag dolling, hitting, kicking, kneeing him in the gut him in a vacant classroom during our schools lunch period and after fifteen minutes I slammed him against the wall and began to squeeze his neck, every part of me wanted to squeeze the life from his body but I remembered this episode and the part where Katara spared her mothers killer and let him go with a vicious warning. If you ever harm her again I will not hesitate to beat you down like I did just now only you'll need a wheelchair for the rest of your life after I'm done with you Shortly after my beat down I learned that he had moved away to another state to get away from me and his then ex-girlfriend thanked me for standing up to him but sadly we lost touch after middle school and not a day goes by where I don't think about her. As for you Alicia I hope you find a man who loves you for you, treats you with respect, and spoils you on occasion and I also hope that you have kids in the near future you would make a great mother

3:10 I'm glad you noticed from the get go that mask is off and she went phyric in all senses of the word. And it's only a tip of this iceberg that's melting under this fire bender.

It wasn't Katara or Kya they were looking for. It was Hama. Remember in The Puppet Master? They took the water benders to see if they could find the Avatar's next incarnation: Hama escaped, so they went back to the South to try and find her. That's why he said "my source". Hama escaping is indirectly responsible for Katara's mother's murder.

I swear Alicia is a Predicting Patricia at this point XD The amount of times she has said something for it to be said in the show immediately afterwards or her thoughts are shown on the show maybe 20 sec later is astounding XD

Oh yeah, one of my all time FAVORITE episodes of any series ever. Which means it's time to rant! Katara's been filling the role of mother since Hakoda left. That means learning a certain sort of responsibility, maturity and restraint a child ought not to need, without her mother to lean on for help and advice. She's been strong for a long, long time, been the rock for her brother and for the Gaang. She hardly got to be a girl, having to rush to being a young woman for everyone else's sake. Which is one of the reasons why this episode is so needed. It's where she gets to stop being the team mom she has to be, and be the hurt, angry young woman she is. And that anger is *frightening* to behold. Which makes it all the more cathartic when she gets to let go of the hurt. Few things are as terrible as seeing someone like her in pain, as such, few things are as heartwarming as seeing them get to heal. Her leaving Yon Rha alive is so important. She got to see the kind of man he was, got to realize how much of a nothing he was. It wouldn't have mattered whether or not she killed him, because his death would have meant *nothing*. She'd still be hurt, she'd still be angry, she'd still have spent time and effort and emotion on him, and in learning this, she learned when it's time to move on from something. Killing him would have been throwing her first kill on top of something that's already eaten away so much of her, for a death that itself wouldn't actually mean anything to her. He wasn't worth any of the things she'd already given and lost to this mess, never mind her first blood. As for Zuko's part in all this? He was the PERFECT person to undertake this journey with. He understood her struggle on an intimate level, better than any of the others. Aang's too idealistic and would have judged and gotten in her way for what he sees as her own good, Sokka's too logical and would argue that none of this would have brought Kya back as much as he wishes it could, Toph's never been through this sort of thing. Zuko? He knows what it's like to lose a parent to a monster, to have been unable to do anything about it even though it was about you, to spend years thinking and keeping it inside because there's nothing else to do but seethe and miss them and HATE. When her monster came out and she blood bended, he didn't dismiss it nor try to get her to stop. He understood that this wasn't some lash-out that had to be handled, some dark side of her the quest was gestating within that had to be stomped out. He knew that it wasn't her at her core, it was her at her most hurt, and that stopping it would have done NOTHING to help her. He also didn't try and get her to go back and punish Yon Rha, didn't even ask her "You're just letting him go?" as most shows would have. He understood what she'd seen in him and how little his death would mean. He trusted her to make a choice that was right by her, something that in their concern, the others would neglect to think about (I'm not bashing them, they care about her and wouldn't want her to do anything she'd regret, but sometimes that kind of thinking can get in the way of certain things, no matter how well meaning). As an aside before finishing off this rant, Zuko slept on his good ear around her. You go back through previous episodes, you'll see he only only does that in places and around people he feels safe around, and for him to put that kind of trust in someone he knows hasn't forgiven him yet is SUCH a big-yet-subtle sign of his character growth. Things like that are why their ship is my favorite in the fandom, and more importantly, why their friendship and connection in canon is my favorite part of the show. To end this rant, I will say this; Zuko and Katara are tied for my spot of "Favorite A:TLA Character", and it's for a *damn* good reason.

the fact that katara used blood bending is such a good indicator for how much hate, rage and pain she is feeling. after using it on hama, she was shaken and terrified of herself.

Alicia I've heard some really interesting theories and one of my favorites is that the fire nation were taking the waterbenders out of fear that one of them was the Avatar reincarnated and that is when the woman who taught katara how to bloodbend escaped after creating that form of bending and that is when the Fire Nation stopped capturing waterbenders and just killed them all and that's why she said she was the last waterbender from that tribe because she knew for sure that the Fire Nation had killed the rest out of fear that they would develop the same kind of bending that she did and that's when the southern Raiders went back down to hopefully find her who had escaped but instead they found kataras mom and she claimed to be a waterbender so they would kill her and then they thought they got the bloodbender that got away not knowing she stayed hidden in the fire nation

What I love about this fight between Zuko and Azula, is that we get to see his progress. Before he couldn't even touch her, now he is perfectly countering fire and fighting her into a tie. Also I love how Sokka and Suki were ready to "do it" until Zuko ruined it. 😂
