I think the limited edition stuff is basically forced scarcity, making people feel like they have to buy the product now (and a ton of backups) because otherwise they'll miss out. Usually I'm good at waiting for a product I'm interested in to be on sale before I buy it, but making it limited edition also makes people more willing to buy it for full price just to get it before it's gone "forever" (even though companies love to take away products and then bring them back)

Simply nailogical has discussed limited edition collaborations and why she has done this and why other brands do this too. Essentially if brands do a limited release of a collaboration it’s a lot easier to lay out how it’s going to work in terms of payment to the collaborator and what/how they’re expected to promote the product(s). There’s a start and end and a definite amount of money that’s promised or expected for both the brand and collaborator. For a more permanent product those lines get a little blurred. It’s hard to determine how much money that product is going to make if there’s a potential infinite amount of that product that can be sold and then if the collaborator doesn’t keep promoting it but they’re still getting paid for it that’s unfair for the brand. If the collaborator only gets a certain amount of money but that brand ends up selling more of the product than they thought then it’s unfair to the collaborator. I don’t think skincare should be limited edition in the formula. That seems silly to me. But special colors or scents or packaging makes sense to me for limited edition collaborations.

Having a whole line featuring a star ingredient is fine with me because I don't think many people exclusively use just one line for their entire routine. Some people may want a cleanser with that ingredient, or they already have a moisturizer they like so they incorporate that ingredient through a toner. Having a whole line of options creates more avenues for accessing that ingredient and provides options for customizing your skincare. The main brand that comes to mind for this tactic is I'm From, with their mugwort/rice/honey/etc lines. Now that I think about it, I actually like these kinds of single ingredient focused lines because of their versatility.

that’s actually a really good point. we definitely don’t need an entire skincare routine with niacinamide in every step, but some people might prefer a serum, some a moisturiser etc.

The Aveeno Calm + Restore line is one that comes to mind for me too. I wanted to incorporate oat in my skincare somewhere and tried most of the line, which is pretty much all good. But, ultimately, oat probably fits best in my regime in the form of toner. Salicylic acid and benzyl peroxide fit in best as face washes, so the oat cleanser is out. Oat isn’t the star of the show in my regime, so the serum is out. And as much as I love the cooling sensation of their oat gel moisturiser, I have other moisturisers with more actives in that I prefer. But, I can use multiple toners between products without it getting too heavy.

I loved this video, please keep making these 😅. I agree about the “real skin” term needing to be updated to “unfiltered skin.” Same idea about women with “real bodies.” The big issue for me is that I want to see realistic representations of people who would use the product. Like, it’s annoying to see a 20 year old advertising a wrinkle cream, or someone with crystal clear skin demonstrating something for hyperpigmentation and blemishes. That is fake.

The temu ads make me laugh because they're so shitty but they don't really bother me much. What really gets me is those few months old Lume deodorant paste ads they had before they brought in a new brunette spokesperson. Previously it was the CEO I think, a blonde middle aged lady and she was so off putting, so obnoxious and even angering sometimes just with her smug and condescending attitude that I wouldn't be surprised if the brand had to throw those commercials out due to their sales dropping down to nothing. Those ads were so damn terrible that I feel like if I'd been a consumer of that product I would have dropped them just over the commercials. You'd think that as CEO you'd want to make sure you were at least a little bit likeable, not to mention charismatic and pleasant to watch before making a long video of you talking about how to apply deodorant to your crotch the product's main advertisement.

Love that you are talking about "unfiltered skin" rather than "real skin." Just like referring to overweight women as "real women" I have never been a fad of using words to create a preference for one thing in opposition of another. Just use words to tell the truth. Also, I remember seeing something about limited edition and the origins of this sell tactic going way back, but becoming more used in visual media in the 60s. Companies would brand it as "limited edition" and then bring it back within 6 months as "back by popular demand." Biggest scam ever. I do not buy limited editions.

I think the limited edition concept from a marketing point of view is to get people to buy it until it sells out, tapping into the consumer's fear of missing out. Brands don't want stock sitting on their shelves so if they just produce multiple lines of limited edition products throughout the year they have a higher chance of product turnover/consistent profits. It's the same with McDonalds for example they always get more sales when they collaborate with K-pop artists or musicians.

I know within the nail world collections that were connected with known characters/movies or anything like that only had the license for a few years usually. So this meant they were “limited” due to the fact they wouldn’t be allowed to produce them again after that license ran out, you sometimes see them relaunched down the line under different names. May be the same for make up that does this, but not really skin care 🤔

I know sometimes brands do the whole limited edition thing as a way of testing the waters. But it also could be because it makes it easier for brands to cycle through different colors, sense and flavors that usually only sell well during certain times of the year. Another reason why it happens is that they can contract a batch from a specific lab and they don't have to worry about being able to order it again if it's limited edition.

Hate to be insensitive, but are you actually suggesting companies tailor holiday marketing to suit each person's feelings? How does that make sense? There are thousands of holidays that are sure to trigger someone.

@@daydreamerzThey’re obviously not suggesting that. But these particular two- Father’s Day and Mother’s Day- can be difficult for people who’ve lost parents or children, and if you consider that everyone who dies was someone’s child and/or parent you’ll realise how many people could be affected. I’ve had several organisations offer the option to opt out of these- it’s not that hard.

I think brands create whole lines using one 'hero' product to appease the masses. One person may want the serum, but another may prefer the cleanser or moisturiser. I think it really depends on what people have established in their routine already.

Thank you for talking about "real" skin. I've had fairly clesr skin my entire lufe. I'm 43 and have lines and freggles but I never had huge outbreaks or acne. A few around period time and early prehnancy - other than that, my skin is clear, bordering on sensitive. I've never had enhancements. No fillers, botix etc. It's just clear. And it's real skin as-well.

Limited edition for collaborations makes sense. If someone has one collaboration out it will very often prevent them from working with someone else because it creates a conflict of interests. But brands could still do the product with a limited edition packaging then change it and add it to their core line - as long as they are clear at the start that it's the packaging not the product that's limited edition.

With limited addition stuff, if it’s in collaboration with someone, (BTS from the example you used) it’s typically “you’ll get a one time pay out of y for us running x amount of units.” So ‘just continuing to sell it’ doesn’t work in that case, as well as takes away from the ‘special’ factor of collaborations. I agree with the every day limited edition releases though that don’t have another person or entities name attached to it.
@ella4frell

The limited edition stuff, as a far as marketing goes, is based on the idea that scarcity pushes sales. If people feel like this product will go away soon, they’re more likely to buy it (and maybe even extra) A lot of brands are pushing pre-sale purchases of limited items where it’s more money just to reserve a product that will ship to you weeks/months later. I think of it similarly to the whole Kylie cosmetics fiasco where they were accused of intentionally having very slow stock so that they were always selling out.

The laneige was actually the other way around, they first had the grape lip mask and then used the same scent for the BTS collab and called it gummy bear. Btw the other limited BTS collabs, butter, peach ice tea and sweet candy are also really nice 😊💜

The thing with "real skin" is so spot on! I think we could also extend that to "real body". No, I don't eat only a leaf of lettuce a day to be skinny...I just am, it's genetics, and my body is real too...there shouldn't be any standards and demands for it, sure, but it is most definitely real and it most definitely needs it's french fries!

this is a common one...when brands don't hold themselves accountable when shit goes wrong OR cant take criticism really well like if someone complains about a product in their comments and so they start deleting the negative comments to make themselves look "perfect" instead of directly addressing the problems or directly responding to the bad comments and holding themselves accountable lmao. i hate when their direct response approach when they fuck up real bad is making a simple apology post instead of making a video where the brand owner/team are apologizing in front of the camera and explain how they're gonna do things right/how things went wrong and sympathize with customers. seeing someone's true emotions and tones makes consumers respect that brand/person even more rather than hiding behind a post. i think you should talk about this in your next video because this is very common in the beauty world

I honestly don’t mind the “making a whole line based on one ingredient” thing. We’re not all skinfluencers, so nobody’s forcing you to use the whole line, you can just pick the one you want. I actually like this because most brands just tend to launch serums, but I prefer toners. That way I can just grab the toner and be done.

i just complained to glossier a few days ago that every single thing they come out with is limited edition, and all i ever see in their comments are people begging for some product or another to be brought back. so frustrating for exactly the reason you gave, why would i want to buy something that i might like and want to make a permanent part of my routine only for it to be long gone by the time i finish the bottle. so silly, but it definitely is to create fomo.

The marketing worked so well on me, and so many things ended up in the bin after sitting around for ages :( Now I won't even go near anything limited edition cause like you said, especially with skincare, what if I like it?! I can never buy it again. I only ever buy limited edition packaging or sizing of things :)

i don’t think it’s inherently a bad thing if a brand follows up and asks why you don’t wish to work with them, as they might be looking for anything constructive to use in future to improve their brand, products, communications etc. but they must understand that no means no and not all influencers are going to jump at working with every brand.

I think limited edition makeup is okay maybe because it's a collab, or holiday product, especially with indie brands who are limited on stock space. With skincare it's also okay if it's in a distinctive packaging or flavors, or they want to test the water before releasing a totally new product variation.

I'm curious about the thinking behind sponsorships all going out at the same time as surely as a brand the benefit of spacing them out would be regularly reminding people of the products over a longer period of time and staying relevant rather than dumping all at once and people being sick of seeing it? Mysteries!

my only guess is that it maybe has to do with managing the brand's relationships with the influencers? like the brand is worried that the influencers asked to do the promotion later on will feel like they're not being treated fairly and aren't as "important" as the ones asked earlier

To be fair to the brands, them asking for additional feedback is going to help them. Influencers are unique in the way they review sooo many products so getting your feedback is very valuable. At the end of the day, they're businesses. If they just left everyone alone and didn't get feedback, and had poorly performing products or a line with only one good product, they likely won't be around too much longer.
