"Things Could Spiral For Labour" | Councils Urge Government To Allow Unlimited Tax Hikes

Councils are urging Rachel Reeves to allow unlimited tax hikes and to scrap the single person discount ahead of the next Budget.
The Local Government Association (LGA) wants the Chancellor to remove the current five percent cap on yearly tax increases, which requires a referendum to exceed.
While government sources told The Telegraph there are "no plans" to adopt these measures, the LGA argues they are necessary to address a £6 billion funding shortfall.
The single person discount, which gives a 25 percent tax break to solo occupants, could save £3 billion annually if removed.
Cllr Pete Marland, chair of the LGA’s economy board, said councils and residents, not Whitehall, should decide how local services are funded.

Councils have wasted billions on their vanity projects with no return to taxpayers. @@tonycoxhead7075 Sorry to hear that Tony, from what I’ve just looked up, as person born before 1951, your state annual income of £9000, is either because there wasn’t enough national insurance stamps paid, or your savings are over the £10,000 threshold and money is deducted according to the amount of your savings. Am I right in saying that? Yet it said, that Pension credit is not means tested to how much wealth a pensioner has…….. So it, sounds very discriminatory to me. Apparently, a married couple getting £17,000 a year from their state pension are entitled to pension credit and all the benefits that go with it, which includes the winter fuel allowance and probably, are excluded from paying council tax. Surely this is discrimination !

I know very little, about people who are older than me, in relation to the state pension. I had assumed, that all people receive less than that, were entitled to Pension Credit. Pensioners getting less than £218,15 a week, it is said, are entitled to PC, or Garrentee, yet you are not entitled because of the year you were born!! The whole system seems very flawed. I sincerely hope that Starmers latest proposals to pensioners, will open up, this rotten can of worms that is in place.

So my mom who is 96 and lives on her own will not only lose her winter heating allowance and have a 10 % increase in her energy costs, she could also lose her single persons council tax allowance. He is hitting all the easy targets while giving his union buddies huge pay rises, no wonder he is fast becoming the most hated PM in history

I have always paid my council tax but if I receive an overly inflated bill next year to fund these immigrants I will cancel my direct debit and only pay 5% more than this years. If everyone did this what could they do. Will cost more to take court action.

You can get pension credit if you have an income of £218.15 a week, state pension is £221.20 a week - so basically you don't get pension credit on state pension because you're over by £3.05. It's bloody disgusting 😠

I'd trust a local council even less than this government, someone I know visited council offices recently on a school tour, the top floor beautifully finished, carpeted and swimming in IT was only twenty five percent full of humans appearing to be working. Vast expensive space empty, a question was asked, the response was, oh people book to come in. More council waste then .
