As a drumline member I’ve witnessed many comrades go down to the fabled trash cans, drum major ladders, fire hydrants, stairs, ramps, fence, people etc. and every time that’s happened my percussion director always said “is the drum ok”

When I was in drumline, we would pretend to throw an imaginary stick around in between reps. Each throw and catch got more exaggerated and intense. I loved it.

We have a running joke where every week one of us gets whacked with an imaginary bass mallet that came from orbit. That person then proceeds to chuck said mallet back into space, where it wreaks havoc on another poor soul the next week.

The drum tech my freshmen year was having us run a section of the music and the snare kept dropping his stick so the drum tech grabbed it when it fell asked if it was the Snares which of course it was and he threw it as hard as he possibly could and it landed in the woods so the snare had to spend thirty minutes looking for his stick while the rest of us kept running that section

The kids I teach are terrified of a pair of sticks I carry with me. I have my normal clicking sticks, but I also have my “tick” sticks. Those sticks are an abomination, they are Vic Firth Tom Aungst tenor hybrid sticks with the tips of the sticks sawed off and they are vertically taped(dumb thing I did in high school because I was bored). Any big mistakes they make, I have them use the tick sticks for a rep😂

2:02 One day during indoor rehearsal two years ago, we were walking to the gym and the guy on bass 5 had his AirPods in so he couldn’t hear anything when we said watch out. He ended up walking straight into one of the janitors trash cans on wheels. Luckily he didn’t fall down and stayed on his feet.

As a former bass drummer, I have tripped on a sousaphone and done the exact thing shown in the video. This was right before we performed at a football game. The drum was fine.

10:46 our loading dock is basically just an elevated slab on concrete about three feet off the ground and about 200ish square feet. We did not like our band director so at the end of the year with a little help from the football team, we got his little Prius onto the loading dock. Needless to say did not return the following year…

Saturday I tripped over a little divit in the concrete....I have the biggest bass drum we march.....it thankfully landed on me and not the ground....the people helping out at the competition asked if I needed some water...I took the water....as well as the humor of my friends.....but hey, we got superiors so it was well worth it.

I am a snare player in the drum line and we have the famous “one more time” phrase. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard it. Other ones for when we screw up include: “if you can say it, you can play it”, and “it sounds like thunder in here”.

That first one already wouldn't have happened from my band. We took very regular water breaks (almost too often I feel at times) because years before I joined, someone literally passed out during practice, and our director had to carry her to the bleachers to make sure she was alright. Ever since then, VERY sure it won't ever happen again.
