Same here, we just don't see the use of it, you can arrange every practical thing that is involved when it comes to laws and equality. It's not a big hassle, and we've seen too many marriages end up in horrible divorces. Dutch people are down to earth, especially when it comes to old institutions like marriage.
@AudieHolland
@AudieHolland 2 жыл бұрын
Just in case a couple wishes some more security in their relation, they can always apply for a Samenlevingscontract. That's about what marriage means for the law, only you don't have to spend a fortune on any ceremony. But do sign it with a notary present to make it an official document.

My guy... I went to my brother at 18 o'clock. I ring the doorbell, he opens the door, looks at me and said ; "We are eating" , while not moving away from the doorstep. My wife is Greek, and I saw her face malfunction. That was funny and sad at the same time.

Haha I know right.. In a lot of cultures, it basically speaks for itself to invite your guests for diner. Not it the Netherlands.... Don't assume you can stay for diner in a Dutch home if this was not mentioned beforhand. And arriving during diner time makes for an awkward and uncomfortable situation.

it depends where you are and when you were born and who is visiting unexpectedly. in rural areas, it is very normal to drop by they even expect you to come around the back door. children have friends who come around without an appointment and that can continue when you are an adult. people from work being in the neighbourhood and dropping by would be weird. it is just something you know is okay or not.
@ChrisEchoes

True, but then it's not really unexpected and usually at predictable times. But I lived in a city centre and worked from home for a while, I often had half a day that I couldn't get any work done because friends that happened to be in the centre stopped by for a coffee. It's also a matter of politeness, don't waste eachother's time and let eachother plan so you can get a lot of things done and have a lot of social life.

1 year in a relationship is nothing, Getting married after 2 years is an early marriage. Most people wait 4 to 7 years or until their kids are old enough to actively participate. Unexpected guests are a no go, And the Dutch will often tell you that, Make an appointment at least 1 hour in advance, And try to be 2 minutes early, Because they value every minute of their time And thus find it disrespectful if you invite yourself. As for the self proclaimed neighborhood cops, People will ask you to turn down the noise, Or honk at people crossing a red light, But as long as you're not an ass about it That's all that'll happen.

Some things that people need to know. There's a big difference in culture between the various provinces. Amsterdam isn't the Netherlands and Amsterdam culture is totally different from other provinces. Going Dutch is only a stingy Amsterdam thing. In the rest of the Netherlands people will buy you a meal and don't even talk about the bill. But they will ask you about your sex life, income and political views.

We need to get our “two cents in” so to say and the boss needs to show he’s/she’s actually listening too. If he/she makes a different call on the matter okay but he/she will hear about it first. Lmao I've seen the intro part of this play out with what Dutch people WILL say :') Two cute girls walk up to the dude in front of a LIDL store asking if it's his car, he's like hell yeaa. The girls then went like "oh such a shame you gotta shop at LIDL now ain't it?" :') I just walked by that and I fucking died imagine how the dude felt lmfao.

Honestly if someone comes by unexpected without even so much as a call to ask if we were busy i'm not opening up that door. Appointments people.. even with friends.😂👌 like what if we're showering or something you know? We have lives. If you wanna come by give me a date and time so i can prepare and at least clean up and clothe myself properly instead of being in my bathrobes with uncombed hair opening the door to an unwelcome visitor XD. Tbh i cannot imagine people just opening up and welcoming guests like that.. what if you were in the middle of something important?😅

I'm dutch... yes it's true... Never ever visit me unannounced. At least call an hour before at a minimum.

The one thing worse than unexpected visitors is unexpected visitors around diner time. 'Why don't you stay for diner?' is another thing we don't say. Don't assume you can stay for diner in a Dutch home if this was not mentioned before diner time.

So maybe a bit more preparation is sensible. We don't want you to choke on us Dutchies :-)) I asked my girl to marry me after just a couple of month. But that was over forty years ago. Nowadays? Ten, fifteen years ... if ever. Well marriage needs love, but does love need marriage? Don't get me wrong: after four decades I still agree with our choice to get married. But we don't depend on it.
