why is the climax the destruction of the church? I thought it was Okonkwo killing the messenger and then realising that the clan wouldn't go to war, because it's when his character has the biggest (and practically only) development. Seeing as he is the main character, any turning point in his character should be the climax. The entire book lead up to him finally realising that he is powerless.

Sounds interesting because gives the different perspective on how new cultural influences both help and harm an existing culture. Colonialism brought many benefits to Africa but lead to many new challenges and a real loss of their culture. I don't blame them for seeing white men as locusts.

Betrayal 1. Nwoye abandoning his father and the Igbo society and covert to Christianity 2. Okonkwo killing Ikemefuna even though the boy calls him father and he is secretly fond of him 3. The clan’s response to the invasion of the white men with passivity rather than strength and they did not aggressively fighting back. Okonkwo sees the clan’s acceptance of the missionaries as a betrayal of the clan’s tradition and their warlike ancestors
@calebsanchez48612 жыл бұрын
Another point is his upbringing of hyper masculinity because of his clan’s perspective of his father whether correct or not through narrative of the clan or Christian settlers. Okonkwo didn’t want Ikemefuna because he didn’t want to show weakness to his son, henceforth the hyper masculinity but ultimately pushed his son to convert.

This is very helpful, but perhaps because given by a white European, full of standard white guilt, does not fully acknowledge the author's subtlety . Nwoye welcomed the coming of the missionaries because he saw an alternative to the macho male culture symbolized by Okonkwo's violence. This was a society in which women had almost no power. If a women gave birth to twins they were murdered because it was thought they were evil. Ikemefuna was murdered simply because the Oracle had ordered it. The Igbo certainly had an established culture and society but it wasn't one this professor would have much liked to have lived in - she would have been one of a husband's many wives and certainly would never have the status she now enjoys in European culture. But because Achebe was a genius, he also shows how much good the Europeans destroyed. The old Igbo society had to go (imagine, dear Professor, being a woman or gay or one who doubts there are such things as gods in that village) but Achebe's point is that it was a great pity that neither side could find a happy compromise.
@simplyizustic61223 жыл бұрын
The compromise is the important aspect. If the Westerners could not bent even an inch why make the Igbos bend so much they break their back?
@generalzico92212 жыл бұрын
@@simplyizustic6122 Good question Izustic, you can't be in the West and East at the same time. Since the white man refuse to hear the black man story why here his own.
