Yes, they did spend 150 million pounds: on six players. They were known to be decent players but if you were to ask anybody they were top four level players, I doubt anyone at the time would agree. All of them improved and as a result the level of the team grew to what it is now. So the argument "they spent 150 million so they should be getting top four" only makes sense if they brought in world beaters like a ronaldo or a varane (sorry for the dig at man united).

When Man City began to soar no one said they over achievers why? or when Liverpool began to rise. Arsenal have done well this season, however let's not forget that they've had no Europe, been out of the cups early & have only played a few games so far in 2022. This means that Arteta has had time in training to implement his ideas & weed out those not pulling in the same direction! We've seen it before when teams have that sort of time on the training pitch, ideas get implemented quicker & results improve.

Are we overachieving this season? 100% Youngest team in the league and I don’t know anyone or any pundit who predicted that. Are we overachieving in the grand scheme of things? No. We should be playing in the champions league

Yet if we don't get into Europe pundits will say that's where we should be. I think the bottom line is, now we're on form and in the driving seat, the narrative has changed. Yet deep down we're never meant to be in this position according to the experts and majority of fans (including myself). So for this season, I'd say yes. Overachieving would be finishing 4th.

"They spent a 150 mill ..." we are 2022, u can easily buy one or two players with that amount, but Arsenal didnt go with that, instead they went really smart and got themselves young, hungry and high potentials players. A 150 mill does not guarantee you anything in football these days but it helps ...

@@frankwhite4643 Exactly !! I think what Arsenal/Arteta has done well comparing to other failing big clubs is that he came up with a pretty good assessment of how much change is needed and where. When u look at Spurs or United, it's like they dont know how much trouble they really are in, in terms of recruitment, squad value, squad potential, style of play ... I can say right now that we are a lucky to have Arteta in the sideline, considering how much of a mess the club was left in by Gazidis and Wenger (and useless and soulless Kroenke's)

I knew the media would do this, just to have something to hold against arsenal if we don’t get top 4. Is this man hearing himself? I expected them to place 6th, 7th, 8th ... they look to be going for 4th therefore they are NOT overachieving ... even though by my own calculation the highest position they could hold is 6th O_o

We will tail off in the end, but after being betrayed by our top striker and playing without an experienced centre forward, a painful exercise in getting players out and re-structuring of the entire club, still in progress, 6th and Europa League football would be acceptable. Get better players in, and then it’s top 4 or a Europa League win next year or the manager has to go. I think he wouldn’t complain about that, it would be over 3 years.

start of the season no one was predicting arsenal top four. Top 4 was sewn up with city, United, Liverpool, Chelsea. It was a battle for 5th between spurs, arsenal, leicester. Arsenal nailed on for 4th now is a real achievement for them. If you’re an arsenal fan the future looks more positive than it does for United, spurs and leicester

I agree with Laura, 2 8th place finishes and everybody around us has been improving. To be where we are so early in Mikels "process" and considering hes only last season had money to spend is amazing......all whilst removing deadwood every season.

We've lost the bulk of an entire squad (below) because the club's been run poorly. Did Jamie expect us to replace them for a tenner a ta car boot sale? We spent 100+ Million to add numbers because the teams been run poorly - and the squads still too small - not add a Lukaku or a Grealish. List of Arsenal first XL players lost for free (or paid to leave) in last 5 years: Aubameyang, Ozil, Carzola, Ramsey, Wilshire, Sokratis, Kolasanic, David Luiz Players who will leave but we haven't received money for (yet) : Torreira, Guendouzi, Bellerin, AMN *I'm probably missing a few*

I can admit i was one who doubted arsenal at the start of the season. I though their transfer window was good but not enough to get top 4 but theyve prove me wrong. Arsenal are exceeding the expectations set at the start of the season by many pundits and it refreshing to see. For me top 4 is arsenals to lose. The mad thing is they could be only a couple points behind chelsea if they can win thier games which was inconcevable start of the season

Well its not like Arteta should've been going into this season aiming for 6th, top 4 should've been the aim, but at the same time the fact that Arsenal have historically been winning league titles has no bearing on how impressive it is or not if they get top 4, its about where they're at now.
