You are truly living your true self aren't you Brittany? I just think it's positively fabulous that you are this way. I can feel and see your passion and love of life...thank you for this post..I sort of feel that you are fearless of what life may hand you..that's the problem I feel most of us experience...we fear living 'different' living the 'unknown'.....YOU make it possible for us to dream and to eventually achieve that dream just by following your experiences......I am not very good with words , just know i am thankful for you and your friend Connor. Blessings :) :)

+Dimi GT Wow, thank you so much for writing to me. I cannot tell you how amazing it feels to receive this comment. I feel seen and appreciated. I really do feel like I'm living my true self- always striving to do it more so. And I LOVE getting to share it in this way with amazing people like you! I think it makes sense that we all have some fear based stuff we are trying to sort out. But the sorting out and learning is the fun part! It's all so fun, really. I think you are very good with your words, actually. They have left me feeling so moved. Thank you, thank you! Sending love.

Thanks for sharing about your life, I always find you fascinating. As I get older I feel like I spend too much time taking care of my stuff (cleaning, organizing, storing it, trying to find items when I need them) and each year I go through my belongings and find I want less. I was happy when about 10 years ago when I removed everything I'd had in a storage unit for years; so crazy I was actually paying for my stuff to sit in a locked room. You are so right about stuff owning us. It is quite liberating for me to just have some half empty dresser drawers.

I know there are a lot of people that do it, all in interesting different ways- I hope you are enjoying doing it your way. I'm sure there are a lot of people you could learn about if you are interested in following more minimalists with children- if you are looking for inspiration, Leo Babauta writes a blog have enjoyed. The Minimalist Sparrow Thanks for asking. Great question and one I get a lot. I made a video about this some time ago, which is pretty poor quality, but explains more about this. Feel free to check it out if you want and I will definitely do an updated version in the future: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5jceKGjm75gidk I work online as a website consultant, basically creating and editing peoples' websites that feel fun to collaborate with and help share their message. I also offer one on one coaching and help lead retreats geared towards healthy living of one sort or another. I sometimes help people out in their physical space, working on decluttering. I have done a number of online jobs in my past too, including translating and working for companies remotely. There are so many options! Elance is a great place to get ideas of what is out there, but I think the best thing to do is to go within and see what excites each of us, what is truly fun and fulfilling for us to do, and to create from there. Thanks again. I hope this is helpful. Feel free to reach out if there is anything else helpful that I could offer.

Thank you for this, and all of your videos. I am in the process of packing for a move next month and watching your videos really help. I will be 50 this year and I grew up with expectations. Such as a job, insurance, doctors, apartment/house full of furniture, and it's such a burden. Or rather, all the extra stuff that I don't use/love/need crowds out everything else. So now, I'm culling through my stuff (again) to make sure that it's something I use/need/love and is not being kept because it's an expectation. Thank you for the inspiration!!

I've never really been a packrat, but things seem to multiply themselves over the years. The past few months I've been slowly going through things and so far have eliminated and rearranged enough stuff that now 90% of the attic is empty as well as 95% of a spare room, and I got rid of a spare car which was almost never used. It indeed is a very freeing experience which isn't over yet for me. I now realize that I can easily move to a smaller and CHEAPER place without feeling the least bit deprived. Videos like yours have been very helpful and inspirational. I don't intend to live out of a backpack (I did something similar in my teens/20's) but I've definately become a fan of the "less is more" philosophy. Thanks, good luck, and keep up the good work!

Karina CT Good questions! I guess what I'm feeling is that I don't feel like I have a "job" because the things I do that bring about monetary compensation feel like fun creation for me. In essence I "work for myself", doing whatever sounds good to me. Yes, I can understand not wanting to deal with the health insurance fine. Note: I apologize for the rambling that follows, but now that it's written it would be a shame not to post it. The George Carlin classic below just came to mind, so I thought I'd share it here since it is this post that inspired me to watch it again. I've been musing over how long I could last if I challenged myself to get rid of ten items a day. DVDs, books, games, CDs, old cables and spare parts for stuff we don't even have anymore. Kitchen appliances, old paperwork. It all adds up so fast doesn't it? My desk is so cluttered that I'd rather get rid of the whole thing than tidy up. I can't even see my niece's picture frame from where I'm sitting because of all the stuff piled in front of it. I almost never have anyone over, so why do I own four armchairs? This video has given me much to think about. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6fKf2ideNp_l8U

I know this may have not been your goal with this video, but it comes across as super-brave to admit doing without a lot of these things in such a public way. Going against the modern grain is badass, and I applaud you for it. My husband and I also don't see doctors or take supplemental vitamins, and we have caught a lot of crap from family for it. Of course, should we need modern medicine in the future, we will seek out medical help. What's the point in going if you don't currently need to, though? Love the video, keep 'em coming!

Weird question- I heard in another video that you have an IUD which, at 22, I'm looking into as long-term sustainable contraceptive option that would allow me to be off health insurance/not have prescriptions etc etc. It would give me a lot more freedom essentially- do you have the copper IUD or the hormonal/mirena IUD?

I have some sentimental items from my mother that passed away, some of these are letters and photos and some hand worked items she created all in a box about half foot wide and about a foot long; how would you deal with being a minimalist if someone close to you had died and you don't want to get rid of these items?

Can i just ask you- and i dont mean to be disrespectful, i am just wondering, cuz i am from Europe (Slovenia) and everybody here automateclly has health ensurance- how can you afford to not have health ensurance? Doesnt it worry you that you might get seriously ill and need longterm treatment or operation? Have a great day and btw i love your channel, very insperational.
@BrittanySTaylor9 жыл бұрын
krakrakrala Of course- ask away! I think it's great that for so many countries have that option! I guess maybe the best way to explain it is that I don't see a good reason for me TO have health insurance. I feel like I invest in my health up front by taking really good care of myself. I don't worry about getting seriously ill. I used to be seriously ill and western medicine was making it worse. I also think that I visited the doctor more frequently because my insurance made it affordable and this lead to me getting more poor advice on how to in reality, just make myself more sick. There are very few instances where I feel like the health treatment that insurance in the US covers would actually be helpful. And for those instances, if they ever came up, such as breaking a bone, I would just seek out a more affordable option (like a clinic where they give affordable health care to people without insurance). Thanks so much for asking about this! I think it's something a lot of people think about and it's good for me to get the opportunity to reflect on it too! I'm so honored that you are enjoying my channel! Thanks again!
@krakrakrala9 жыл бұрын
***** Interesting perspective. When i saw that movie by Michael Moore Sicko i couldnt belive it. Its mentioned in that movie infact how bad our health care is, but i feel like at least we have it. Here there is no difrences between presidents and poor people , everybody goes to the same hospital. I do get your point though i just heard conversation between two older ladies who were discusing how even if they dont think they actually need a certain pills, they are gonna go to a doctor to pick them up, cuz they have the right to those pills :) But here in Slovenia the majority of us have gardens and we live under the mountains and everybody does some sort of activity- at least walking or hiking and the majority of people that i know, dont even have microwaves- cooking eerything from scratch. So we are a really healthy nation. And i think because of that we can all still have health insurance. bUt i guess you are al lot more carefull about your health, cuz you cant just say ah i will go to the doctor and he will fix it. I think beacuase you guys im learning a completely diffrent way of thinking. Here its expected to go to university ( they are free here) then get a good job work hard for 40 years and wait for those golden years. Oh and by 28 it kinda expected for you to already be married and planning for kids. And of course you are succesfull - thats the deffinition- if you are married, and have a house or appartment and a good car. And i feel like i dont belong here, because im fine with my old car. I only need it to get me from a to b. And i want to be happy and excited to go to work, not be dragging myself to work and allow my boss to treat me like it suits her and i cant say annyithing back. My mom used to come home crying because of her boss- she is retired now, but wants me to do the same thing. Be quit when my boss is unfair to me. So if i wouldnt look into the world through youtube and see that you dont have to live like this, that someone has such a power over you, i would also spend 40 miserable years dragging my self to work. Now im learning myself writing code in Ruby, to get a freelance job someday :) Btw if you ever travel around Europe, i think you would really like Slovenia. If you ever come to Slovenia- it would be really fun to meet you and Connor :) You can even crash at my place- i have an extra room with a bed. :):)
@BrittanySTaylor9 жыл бұрын
krakrakrala Wow, i'm so grateful that you took the time to share all of this. Yes, I think you are right about shifting perspectives. I can really see how that structure "works" for a lot of people and I think in the greater sense it keeps us all manageable, on some sort of conveyer belt, following some sort of template that our communities can handle. But doing things this different way- following what is in each one of our hearts, that is much more difficult to predict. I think there is a lot of fear of the unknown. And we are taught to plan for our futures, follow a certain path. I love that you are happy with your old car, that you want to do things your way instead of your boss's. I can imagine it feels challenging at times to go against the grain, especially when you are doing it differently than so many around you. I'm really proud of you for finding community through KZbin and following your heart. Omg, I definitely want to visit Slovenia! Conor and I have a friend from there and have heard so many great things. We will totally let you know whenever we end up that way. Let us know if you ever visit the states! Thanks again for reaching out. It's been awesome connecting with you about all of this.

Minimalism is fine and freeing, but your way won't work for most people - its too extreme. Most of us need a place to live with an address, and a job. I think having a job, 401k, health insurance (never know when an emergency can happen) and doctors is a good thing. Why don't you need doctors? I am a woman and can't imagine not having annual pap smears or mammograms because if you have a problem you are not gonna know until its too late. I think an annual physical, plus pap smear and mammograms as preventive medicine should be available and used by everyone at least for preventive illness and well visit reasons. Also, 401k or IRA is a good idea since you won't be able to keep up this lifestyle forever, and when you are old you may not be able to count on Social Security - plus, if you are not working, you are not earning any SS for your old age when you are not able to earn money or work or live this lifestyle - imagine this at 70!
@BrittanySTaylor9 жыл бұрын
adahir100 I really appreciate you taking the time to share your feelings here. It really makes sense to me that you feel this way and I can definitely understand where you are coming from. I definitely think that you should do what feels best for you in this regard- that everyone should. What feels best for me is to take care of my body up front by leading a healthy life. I also feel that pap smears and mammograms are not necessary and in some cases can even cause trauma to the body. I'm not against western medicine, I just choose to use it when it serves me. I like being innovative and creating my own savings and security by taking care of myself in the way that feels best for me. My desire with this video was not to suggest that others should do what I'm doing, but rather just to share my experience and inspire others to feel out and do what feels best for them, whatever it is. I love that you have taken the time to think about what feels best for you and to share it here. Thank you again for your time and for caring :).

I believe homelessness is beneficial. I don't own any home mainly because they tie you down to one place. You can rent it out and get a property manager to manage it, but when the tenant has an issue, the property manager usually doesn't do anything but ring you up.

+The Monkey and The Wolf Mmm you don't have to try to explain anything to me. I have been there and there is nothing worse than not knowing where you're going to sleep and ending up sleeping on concrete behind a gas station with a jacket for a pillow. No thanks. It's a cop out to believe that anyone would want or choose this lifestyle on purpose. If they were on drugs or running from the law or their own mind, then I could believe it. No matter the situation, It's not necessary to aim this low. There is nothing exciting about being homeless. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but it's the truth. Look how long a dog lives outside compared to inside. Elements age you and make you ill. Even Jesus had a roof over his head.
