It’s super weird to see you at places I see every day (Coyoacán, Insurgentes) and hear parts of my everyday life narrated in British English. As for your question about newspapers, I despise them. As a Mexican, I've always thought that modern piñatas in kid's parties are weird. I mean, traditional ones make a lot of sense because of the spikes and what those mean, but this whole idea of buying a piñata of a character the kid likes so everyone beats the hell out of it is so strange! I've seen kids crying because they don't want to beat the piñata at all. Anyway, that's just me. Great video!!

I've seen kids crying for that too, but in a way it's a good idea because it teaches kids not to get too attached to cartoon characters. Be attached to your family, not imaginary friends or whatever. But it is traumatic. When I see those kids crying I want to cry too.

(Mexican here, born, raised and still surviving in CDMX) TL;DR: Violence and sex sell really well. Those newspapers know that, but sex imagery is regulated; violence is not. And there's the result. --> Ok, so, the main problem with graphic newspapers is divided in three: 1. There's no proper regulation for that kind of violent contents in printed media, much less its public exhibition. 2. Unfortunately, there's a lot of people who actually buy those newspapers, not just for the violent imagery, but also for the (very) sexual images they have inside. 3. Ironically (like really, wtf), there's a lot of regulation for sexual content in printed media, so _you'll almost never see sexual contents as easily as graphic violent ones_. // In conclusion, those newspapers know very well that violence and sex sell really well. But they keep the sexual stuff inside, while the violence is on the front page. And for now, most of us have to endure that kind of shit. Fortunately, this may be a bold statement but I do think most Mexicans do not read that kind of contents. A lot of them do, but most don't. EDIT: Forgot to mention the most important thing: I love your videos. Really. You're very good doing this, sir.

That "genre" of newspapers is called nota roja. Violent crimes, accidents, anything gruesome that appeals to the morbidity of some people. It's been around for over a hundred years and as Carlos said most people don't read it, cause let's be honest... it's literary or journalistic value is almost non-existant, nontheless it has it's audience.

Carlos Etergen you forgot to say that those kinds of media at targeted for the poorest or "lower classes" you can notice in the language of those "red note" newspaper , even in the announcements you can notice that and they are cheaper than the "real newspapers"... As mexican, the red press, gruesome images were also a shock, specially when i spent some years living in the city where there are more common. It is also weird how the second pages of those newspapapers have a softporn image normally. The combination, and the idea that is better to have that on the front page have always puzzle me. Eventhough that red press has a long history in the country. I recommend you to look for the photographic work of Enrique Metinides.

Lol, the laundry soap and the no toilet seat get me also. I'm riding my bicycle through Latin America and am close to Mexico City actually, goal is to be there before Christmas. Anyway, the toilet seat, or lack of, is common in Brazil as well. I'll let you know if it is the rest of Latin America as well in a few years. In Brazil they gave the excuse that toilets are never sold with seats. Well yeah, they're sold separately everywhere, that isn't an excuse. I notice over 50% of homes lack toilet seats also.

Hi Paul! For the Mexican people (I'm Mexican obviously) this newspapers are really normal for all the people, and are one of the most sellers newspapers in the city's, here in Mexico it's really usual the word "morbo" that means "something that impacts the attraction, like accidents, like curiosity" it's part of the Mexicans and everybody knows about that, the kids, the teenagers, everybody knows about this newspapers and images and for us it's really normal, if you want a one extra information is this: When the tragedy pass, at the next day, one person walk screaming the news around the streets of the tragedy passed for sell more because, in many cases, the people it's from the neighborhoods and the people who lives here buy the newspaper .

Yep, we really have a hard time saying "No" directly. Regarding the gore-ey tabloids, yeah I fucking hate those, we have a handful of good newspapers, a bunch of bad ones, and a truckload of those horrible things... On a side note: DUUUUUUUUDE "Los Chupacabras" ARE AWESOME! And they close super-duper late, so they are just perfect if you got out of a party near Coyoacán and feel a little drunk.

We would insist and gently make fun of you, accusing you of being a lightweight for not even trying the food and pressure you to eat some more, possibly offering you some other dish or atleast a beverage. At a certain point, we might give up on insisting and start eating ourselves. Possibly finding the opportunity later on, in between bites or after everyone has finished eating, to make fun of you some more, e.g. "Estás enamorado o en dieta?"
