I used to work for a shortline railroad as a locomotive mechanic, there were guys there who used to work for the class 1s before they made the switch to the shortline, they have told me stories about them, there was a guy who used to work for UP. He was a conductor, and from what he’s told me, he said that UP literally “owned him” and apparently it’s like that with all the class 1s. UP especially is the worst out of the bunch, I might go back to the railroad but if anything, you won’t catch me dead working for UP.

@Jabba.Da.Hutt_ I’ve heard very bad things about BNSF, and the history behind CSX is that things got very draconian under Hunter Harrison, and considerably better under Jim Foote, then, when Foote stepped down the former CEO of Ford has only made things better. CSX is part of the reason why I don’t buy the “PSR is bad” narrative. When you increase safety, decrease travel times, and increase profits. That’s a win for everyone involved. Note these statistics are from train magazine.

Something I dislike on UP is the faded burnt locomotives. Nearly all the UP's I see are ether very dirty, extremely faded, or the flag is burnt or all of the above. The repainted units are nice, but who knows what they'll look like in 10 years.

Used to be that when they went through a fuel siding, they'd go through a wash as well. UP also figured out it costs about $40,000 to repaint a locomotive, so saving money while your fleet looks like Dante's Inferno RR is the name of the game.

@58 One of the other things I hated about the NS derailment was the media constantly spouting nonsense about how the airbrakes were "civil war era", implying they were out of date and should be replaced with ECP brakes. I found this incredibly moronic as, while I agree that ECP Brakes are better from a technology standpoint, they aren't compatible with the airbrakes that, lemme see, EVERY OTHER COMMON CARRIER RAILROAD IN NORTH AMERICA USES, and NS would be shooting itself in the foot if they implemented it. Also, the brakes weren't even what caused the derailments, as it was overheated bearings that caused the cars to jump the tracks and the defect detectors failed to recognize it. Yeah, NS f*cked up and they should pay more money to the people of EP and need to hire more people to maintain their shit, but I also blame the media for its total f*cking incompetence in properly conveying the information to the general public, who now thinks that every derailment is some elaborate government scheme to break the economy or something.

look, man. as a railroad expert, freight railroads will always upgrade their engines for more power, and as the old ones age, they slowly fall apart because everything gets to that stage eventually. and as they're falling apart, they are in need of more engines with the official livery, so they replace the old with new. I'm sorry for you, I know where you're coming from. The LA&L is beginning to do similar things BNSF is doing, but this is a part of life, man. Everything has an end in this world, unfortunately.

The thing I hate the most about CN is that they're pretty much strangling Amtrak long distance capacity for western Amtrak long distance trains with their Chicago - Carbondale line. How so? They're forcing Amtrak to run 7 superliners on the Illini and Saluki trains, taking away capacity from trains that need those superliners like the Zephyr, the Chief, the Empire Builder, the Texas Eagle, and the Capitol Limited. Also CN is just really bad to Amtrak in general, since they demanded Amtrak to pay for maintenance on a line that the Adirondack runs on last year.

Great regular turn road pools, good home time between trips, and laying off wasn’t that hard to do. Just stay under 8 layoffs in a 90 day period. I've said this before elsewhere, but CSX not fully painting their HUs is a huge missed opportunity, imagine something like ACL's purple transfered to a GEVO the same way NS did. Most railroads back in the 40s and 50s had some amazing nose designs. Pretty much every Class I got poisoned by PSR. As a foamer, I missed a heritage unit after wasting an entire day trackside because NS decided to hold it and let literally everything else go first. Single track unsignaled line here BTW. At least with CSX there's a sort of ballpark time when a symbol can be expected.

I grew up, and still live by, the formerly Wisconsin central, now Canadian national main line between Fond du Lac and Slinger Wisconsin. I've seen a lot of Canadian national trains in my 35 years. And I don't think I've ever seen one that I would call Pink. The red that CN uses is more of a tomato red, and it just gets more orange as it fades. I personally like the CN colors, the old seargent stripe paint scheme is awesome, one of the boldest of all time. What's interesting to me about the CPKC new colors is that it's basically the CN livery, but the red goes 3/4 down the train before white stripe/black, instead of 1/4. CN is og and looks better. I agree, pretty uninspired and disappointing.

I live in Chicago next to the St. Charles Air line aka downtown connection to the Iowa division . I see the SD-70s almost every day only a handful are in CN paint . On occasion I will see EJ&E SD-38s more often GTW GP-38-2s and sometimes SD-40-2 /Gp-40-2 in CN/GTW/IC paint . I think EHH taught them to be like ICG which didn't repaint most of the former GM&O units.

UP has the point system too. And yes it sucks. You max out at 28. When you lay off you usually get 7 points per week day and like 10 or somethin on the weekends now? Idk they just changed them recently again. Doesn’t take long to stack up and takes 2 weeks marked up to get 4 points back. It’s annoying especially when real life strikes and you can’t show up to work. We also get 5 sick days for the entire year too…

You're correct. Matter of fact, GEVO's have made Class 1 railfanning so boring that I have contemplated quitting the hobby all together many times. Also, sadly, the only shortline near me recently replaced all of their classic SD40-2 units with Dash 9's. But somehow, I can't seem to pull myself away from trains and train media, including videos, documentaries, books, movies, and various toys.

Definitely, the biggest change I've noticed, that many others can probably tell you as well from going Class 1 to shortline, is a much more predictable type of schedule. Not only that, but unlike NS where basically everybody is going back and forth about seniority and instantly hating or looking the other way from you for being the new girl, shortlines or at least the one I work personally, is literally like that of a family type of vibe and work environment which definitely makes the job a lot easier to do and brings back the fun and enjoyment of it.

The thing you said about the East Palestine derailment is insanely true. “There they go to derail another train” this, “they derail those trains on purpose” that. It was because of a hot axle. Most derailments are something else, like hitting a semi or a wrong set switch.

CN Conductor here, not sure why this popped up in my recommended but here we are. I operate out of Mac Yard, primarily running across the York sub and up Bala to the northern terminals (Capreol, North Bay) as far as locomotive paint goes, they don't care about the yard engines paint that much, but they are good about keeping the Main line locomotives in good condition, both mechanically and aesthetically speaking. Only thing they seem to forget is keeping on top of the engines radio capability. The locomotives radio tends to shit itself in high transmission traffic areas i.e. Halton and York subs but otherwise are fine. Edit: By the nine I've never had a comment liked by a creator so fast 2nd Edit: CP sucks.

Before 1980 the Southern Pacific had impressive (40- 50mph)combinations going by a residential back yard between north 4th and sixth Avenue in Tucson. That guy probably didn't realize how fortunate he was. Learning to sleep next to massive noise takes time, like Amtrak stopped at a siding, all is quiet till 4, 6 or eight Loud Roarring beasts go by without any advance notice followed by a 400 or more wheels banging 4 at a time with 2 seconds between which are sure to wake up someone

I’m a teenager who’s grown up around the railroad. I was wanting to work for BNSF, but now that I hear about some of the conditions the workers are put in, I’ll pay some more attention to the specifics of these companies. I would work for UP, especially since UP runs through basically all of north Texas (where I’ve lived my whole life). But their pay is CRAP. A few months ago, I saw a job listing for conductors and *the pay? Oh, a casual **_$15/hr._* But I’d say that if neither are good, I’d work for CPKC since they also run through generally close territory and think their future is bright, plus, they merged, they’re going to need more resources. But, if you have any advice or anything for some odd reason, feel free to let me know; I’m all in.

I’ve worked for UP and now currently at BNSF as a machinist and all I can say is BNSF was once a great railroad until Katie Farmer took over. Same with UP, once Lance Fritz took over it all went to shit. At CPKC, I’ve only heard terrible things from the machinist about working in their shops. Most of them don’t even show up to their investigations anymore because they know they’ll be fired. In my opinion, it’s all the same. It’s literally a love-hate relationship. You love the work and the people you work with, but the leadership (or lack thereof)is absolutely garbage.

This... has so much ask around this. Accept Criticism? We have it. First of all, I don't even care about BNSF having too many GEVOs, but I agree that the PBAS is also really bad. Secondly, UP should Donate their SD70Ms to many museums, it would preserve modern-ish times for future ones. Oh, and the 1979 was intended more for promotion than actual RR use. Next, CSX not fully painting their HU's is actually something that departs sharply from what UP and NS have been doing. It perfectly resembles present to past. Maybe the safety lines would've followed the same pattern. I do have to agree that the Chessie and NYC HU's are pretty bad. 1973 has the Chessie Logo WAY TOO SMALL and 1853 has a Serif Font instead of what the NYC really used. If I were to fix EVERY unit whilst recreating them in Trainz 22, these 2 would come up first. We don't have anything for NS, so we skipped to CPKC. I agree with the fact that it's still a very stupid name... that "Canadian Pacific Kansas City". It's like they took the BNSF path naming the merger in the first place! What we could come up with for a better name was "TriCountry Rail". This represents the 3 Countries CPKC runs in (Mexico, USA, Canada). "That paint scheme belongs in the dumpster". I agree with that, they simply took the SPSF path of making a merger livery. CP Red, KCS Yellow/Black. That's it. Maybe they should make one Blue, White & Green like the GEVO Demo unit! Your random "CN, what is this?" spooked me a little. Anniversary Units don't have to be fancy indeed, but we can make one fancy for our TRS22 Fictional Merger. If one of us gets to buy Jointedrail.com's CSX ES44AH, we could use it as a basis for REMASTERED Heritage Units. Well, that was it for said Criticism. This wasn't for a grade (Duh), but I had fun typing all of this.

The gevo was made with North American safety cabs because originally many engineers and crews die in train derailments because the cab didn’t have any saftey features The North American safety cab makes it safer for them and instead of it being a deadly job it’s more of a safer job and sure it’s rare to see the sd40-2 because they rarely use them as they aren’t good for freight service anymor

This may be controversial (somehow), but I kind of like the CSX heritages, fade and all The most annoying thing about BNSF to me is they keep getting 6-axle units with only 4 traction motors. I’ve spoken with a former engineer who says they absolutely don’t haul as well; and it’s a waste of the extra axle. I doubt it really saves much money at all omitting that axle either.

For example, you mentioned, the Conrail unit, well that's a fallen flag that could also be flown by not just CSX but also Amtrak, MARK, the MBTA, Metro-North, NJ Transit, Norfolk Southern, SEPTA and of course Conrail. (if they still had their own locomotives.) Also we need to get NS #8098 and CSX #1976 and put them on a train together.

I live in NS territory, so I pretty often see Dash 9s or AC44C6M's (God forbid I ever see a GEVO or ACE again) but I hate BNSF and CN with a burning passion. I'm already biased towards NS and CP, so that will forever dictate that I have beef with them, but I honestly hate the combination of orange and green for BNSF. The paint scheme itself is cool, just not a big fan of the colors. As for CN, they are the Penn Central of Canada. I get why people hate NS, but even NS isn't as bad as CN when it comes to derailments. I'm obviously biased towards NS as is, but the one thing I love about them and their predecessors is how they have a tradition of running long-hood forward. I've never seen one myself, but it ain't Norfolk Southern if they don't run long-hood forward.
