As someone who lives in the San Diego area, the Surfliner and Coaster services are two really neat unique train sets to see going up and down the area, the aforementioned busses on these routes also help a lot when the Surfliner's rail gets inevitably washed out like it did just recently thanks to all the rain. Really cool video though, I know you like covering lots of Amtrak services but maybe one day you could cover the Coaster service as it uses an interesting set of rolling stock
@pacificostudios9 ай бұрын
Although Pacific Surfliner may have been adopted as a name in 2000, the service dates from Amtrak Day in 1971, and is descended from the Santa Fe's "San Diegan" service between LA and SD that originate in 1938. The extension of the San Diegan service to Santa Barbara began in 1988, and San Luis Obispo was first reached in 1995. Goleta, which is now the northern endpoint for many Surfliners, opened in 1998.

Note on State-owned trains, such as West Coast trains like Cascades, Capitol Corridor, San Joaquins, and Surfliner-the states own the equipment, and manage the service. Amtrak is a contractor, hired by the state or the rail agencies to operate and maintain the trains. The branding and marketing comes from those agencies, not Amtrak.

A note about the Night Owl: Amtrak currently doesn't have sleeper service on 65, 66, & 67. There was sleeper service added back with a mid-2021 experiment that saw a lot of positive reception, but issues with bad track and crew unfamiliarity with Viewliners, among other factors led to Amtrak cutting the service in early 2022. It would be nice if Amtrak would return sleeper service on the Night Owls again but we just have to sit and wait.

Another well done and informative video. I honestly wish we had something like this in Canada to expand regional passenger services given that VIA doesn't seem to offer much of that on their own (especially for areas outside the main corridor that could benefit from provincially backed services but use VIA as an operator like the case with these Amtrak brands). There's one small error though as you said Empire Service dates back to Penn Central in 1967 while Penn Central didn't exist until 1968
@TheRandCrews9 ай бұрын
It’s tough if possible, maybe that Calgary - Banff train could be a start as a “Via” sponsored train but I’m not sure if that’s a private or public run system. Though I doubt any consvervative governments in places like the Maritimes and the Prarie’s would be interested starting a provincial transit system, seeing that my province of Saskatchewan axed our bus system thinking Greyhound would replace them and or others
