yes😭 just because a book has problematic characters doesn’t mean the book is problematic 😩 it’d be so boring to read books with perfect characters and little issues
@sakinaalia1067
@sakinaalia1067 3 жыл бұрын
But sometimes it’s annoying because it’s downplayed, like I read until Friday night by Allie glines because of someone’s rec and the amount of internalized misogyny in that one book was insane. Like the hero slept around but the heroine never judged him but she judged every girl who ever was with him even if she was really nice and felt superior because she didn’t wear a full face or wear short dresses. I love problematic characters but I don’t like when the book never challenges it or shows growth.

@Victoria Strauss yeah i don't know about that. I'm thinking about books like 'After' where toxic relationships and people with some serious issues are full on romanticized... Obviously characters don't have to be perfect, that would be boring, but (heavy) issues should be solved or at least brought up imo. However, to each their own ofc :)

@@jazz489 yeah it makes no sense. Like one of my favorite shows ever is it’s always sunny in Philadelphia and it’s funny because all the characters are terrible people. Some of the greatest characters ever are characters I hate. As long as you don’t glorify or romanticize it it’s totally fine to enjoy a book that displays a toxic relationship, however I just prefer when the characters in the book show growth or the characters are aware of the toxicity.

At the same time though, often those types of books do romanticize toxic behavior. It’s good as a reader to be able to distinguish the difference between fiction and reality as she said, but recommending books like that is really harmful and adds to that toxic culture

I absolutely hateeee the stereotypical “male romance book” character names. Ryle, Axel, Pike - these super “rugged” sounding names. I know there’s a whole psychological aspect to how an author names their characters but I honestly respect a book so much when it’s a name that feels authentic to the character and more like someone you may meet in real life.

Also not once have I read about high school MCs actually studying when they're in year 11/12???? and like I understand thats not a priority in many teenagers' lives but how do these book characters go through the entire school year surrounded in all this drama yet still somehow find themselves on their way to an Ivy League school after graduation like???? most people aren't geniuses like that and actually have to work for their grades and therefore dont have time for all this drama plsss lmao you could have had the whole school setup thing going on while making them have realistically busy and drama-filled lives by making them uni students !!!

I both agree and disagree with the "distinguishing reality from fiction" idea because on one hand even if a book touches on problematic ideas or behaviours it doesn't mean that the person reading condones those behaviors BUT I find it really hard to read books with problematic aspects where the those ideas aren't ever challenged or denounced because it just reads as romanticisation of those toxic behaviors which is super harmful. Like in After for example my main issue with that book is that it rarely points out or acknowledges just how toxic the relationship is and the fact that they end up together in the end after all that borderline abusive behavior with little to no character development is just very icky to me I much prefer when books like that end in the characters splitting up and learning from the bad aspects of the previous relationships to become better people.

As someone who wants to write a book, this was definitely helpful. I agree with everything you have said. If a relationship or character is portrayed poorly it will stop me from reading, no matter how good the plot is, and vise versa. I also really despise unnecessary information in books as that leads to plot holes. I have read a few books where the side plots are totally irrelevant to the main plot, which leaves you wondering if it was even needed in the story. Like you said, the endings should be rounded up properly as well. I also hate it when authors will drag out a story and rush the ending. As a reader you just end up feeling like you haven’t achieved that satisfaction with finishing the book, and it makes you wonder why you bothered to spend hours to even read the story.

I didn't expect this video to be nearly as relatable as it turned out to be! So many of these things r ones I hate as well; the shirtless men on covers, the belittling of other women, the instant attraction, the miscommunication trope, the "leaving u for your own good" trope, the "you like this book so you must advocate for this thing", and many more that you've already mentioned so I won't point out. I think a lot of these things stem from bad writing, like if a book isn't written well, you'll feel annoyed by the main lead or think of them as misogynists or feel that the relationship is unrealistic and stuff. I disagree with what you said about companion novels cause I'm one of those people who reads out of order, lol. I mean, if it's a series where the plot of all the books is the same or intertwined, then you kind of have to read them in order. Otherwise, I wouldn't force myself to read a book I'm not interested in just because it's part of a companion novel series. If I want to read all the books, then I read by order or like if I wanted to read books 4,5,6 then I'll read them in order but if I don't want to read book 5, I'll go to book 6 after book 4 and maybe if I feel like reading book 5 some other time, I will. Adding to the list of things I hate, there's the "best friend who turns out to be evil" like no, I want to see good and strong friendships, y r u destroying my expectations from book friendships, I also hate it when one of the main characters dates or hooks up with another person just to make the other main character jealous, like y can't u just NOT do that. I especially hate it when the only personality trait of a character is their tragic past. Like u wanna know who this main girl is, she's someone who saw her mother killed as child or something, like ok, I get it, she has a bad past but I also wanna know if she likes baking or hiking or if she hates apples or coffee, u know? I also have many many more but this comment is wayyyyyy too long so I'll hold it for the time being. You can probably tell how much I loved this video but in case you can't, I LOVED THIS VIDEO!! And if you made a video about things you loved in books, I'd be really excited to watch it!

Especially when it comes to dark romances (I enjoy captor captive sometimes, I’m sorry lol) and I’ll read reviews or hear people talk about a book I’ve read and I’m like “yall know it’s….. FICTION.. right?” People take things too seriously when we’re literally reading stories! Come on peopleeeeee 😂 Anywaysssssss I adore you’re channel, you’re my comfort booktuber ✌🏻

Completely agree about the "problematic" books part, as an avid dark romance reader. I think what people confuse is that when u know when u start a book that it's gonna be about a mafia or a forced marriage or whatever, u can't complain about it being EXACTLY WHAT IT SAID IT WOULD. But like, if a book says it's about a shy girl falling in love with a popular guy and the guy turns out to be like, a misogynist who expects her to do his chores and shit and she's just hopelessly in love with him through out and idealizes him treating her like shit, then it becomes problematic.

me personally, i love miscommunication/willfull avoidance of communication... if its done right. i dislike it most of the time, but sometimes i just find that sweet spot where it's something that is heartwrenching but still makes sense within the plot and characterization of the characters! its exciting and anxiety inducing but also feels very realistic to me when done right

the child thing is so true, I once read a book where they had a baby that was 8 months old and he could say words and chew whole meals and just all unrealistic stuff and it irked me. also agree with the age-gap thing, you have to write it well or it becomes creepy and uncomfortable.

unpopular opinion but I don’t like when the characters fall so deeply in love to where it seems so wattpad-y and cringey, ex. twilight, i despise how obsessed edward and bella were with each other when they barely even knew each other

Yes to the descriptions of characters 🙄 it takes me out of the book immediately if there's a whole long paragraph about what they look like and what they wear because I'm sitting there trying so hard to imagine it
