Things I No Longer Buy. I own very few possessions and have been a minimalist for a few years now. One of the most important part about owning less is BUYING LESS. So today I share the things I no longer buy or own.
I never buy these things and I would not let these things clutter my home!

I started my minimalist journey about four years ago. I used to buy books but now I use the library. I don't pay for magazines, online subscriptions or streaming services. I sold all but about six DVD's because I realized that I only watched the same few movies over and over again. I don't buy pets. I took in my partners dog when he passed away and I took very good care of her for years until she passed. Technically, she was adopted. I don't intend on having any more animals. Instead, I donate to animal shelters and sanctuaries. I don't buy anything that isn't vegan, eco-centric or fair trade. I have never been a fan of jewelry. I have a few bracelets made out of beads which I rarely wear. The last candles I purchased were soy almost four years ago but I have not purchased any since they were used up and that was over a year ago. I do not buy any kind of holiday decor regardless of the holiday. I also do not allow people to give me gifts and I do not give gifts. Most people that I know have too much stuff so why give them something that they do not need, deserve or will appreciate when they don't already use or take care of what they already have? A lot of them have packed garages and storage units so I won't contribute to their chaos.

I moved from a 2 bedroom house into a 1 bedroom house last year. It was unbelievable how much stuff I got rid of. Now I’m pairing down again for a move to the Midwest. The cost is too overwhelming to take my stuff, so the bare essentials are going with me. Time for a fresh start 🎉

Hello johanna. It's jenny, the mom from the philippines. I really love your videos. They are inspiring and informative. My special daughter is already a teen and as she grows older the time spent in taking care of her increases. Minimalism really help me a lot. To reduce time for self-care, i threw away my 'vanity kit' & stick to the barest essentials. I no longer wear&buy cosmetics, no longer use skincare products and i shaved my head so no more shampoo&conditioner, hair care products, hair accessories & salon trips. To keep myself clean, all i need are the ff: bar of soap (for entire body), toothpaste, toothbrush, dental floss, deodorant, hair clipper, razor, nailcutter, ear curette. I removed all decors & most furnitures to reduce time cleaning. I no longer buy seasonal decors. We make simple/easy meals (less preparation time-ingredients-materials-clutter/mess= meal ready in minutes). We stop celebrating special occasions so i sold my chinawares. My husband opted to walk every morning & sold his gym equipment (thank God!).

I grew up in a very traditional British setting, where there were very clear social expectations as to how you should dress (from not wearing brown shoes in the town to not wearing black shoes in the countryside to having black tie in the wardrobe). One thing I don't do any more - reflected in my decluttering and purchases as a minimalist - is adhere to this. So I wear black loafers day-to-day and have walking shoes for hiking and running shoes for exercise. And while I do still need a suit for certain work things, I have one (reduced from what was still a fairly modest wardrobe by some standards of eight). And I will not go to a black tie event again!

How interesting to hear, that sounds very traditional, and also very limiting! I will have to ask my grandfather if he grew up with similar "rules" growing up as a farmer on the countryside but studying at university in the city.

Your remarks about Amazon amused me! I live in the UK and a short while ago Amazon announced that they would not longer take Visa credit cards as from 19 January. I was surprised at the rush of relief I felt - yes, my one and only credit card is Visa. So I can unhook myself from Amazon and am surprised at the sense of freedom this gives me. My only problem is going to be book downloads. I read a lot and have a Kindle. But I am looking for ways round this. I have already downloaded an app which will allow me to borrow books online from my library and will visit more in person as well. Also, second hand books is an option as I can return them to the charity shop as soon as I have finished reading them. So thank you Amazon for refusing to take my credit card, have a feeling you will be doing me a huge favour! As I want to do a nobuy/lowbuy year next year this will be getting me off to a good start....

I love your concept of avoiding new tech. So often the "latest and greatest" is barely better now than last years model. I bought my Kindle Paperwhite used and it seems to work just as good as the new ones that just came out. Plus it feels good knowing you're re-homing something and preventing it from going to a landfill. Great video Saga, keep it up! 😃

Something I will never buy again is new furniture. I haven’t bought a piece of furniture in 15 years, old or new. How sad to think of the abundance of furniture cluttering the earth . My husband and I will never buy another new car. I feel about vehicles the same way I feel about furniture. The last car we owned we had for 15 years. We drove it until it died and couldn’t be resurrected. It head 360,000 miles on it. It was a Toyota. 😊 Loved this video, it gave me pause for thought.

I love this video so much. I agree with everything you said. Especially the pet part. Animals should not be treated as objects or property. If you want to take care of an animal you should choose to adopt one. Right now I'm still taking care of two bunnies I adopted from an animal shelter. And I absolutely love them! But once they pass away I probably won't get pets anymore. Except for my tamagotchi 😅 haha that's the only reason why I wouldn't call myself an "extreme" minimalist. Because I still got one Tamagotchi... Idk I just love taking care of it and it doesn't "produce" any clutter. 🙈 It's an opportunity for me to "take care of something" without constantly having to buy stuff for it.

I agree with much of this video but I think my season of life is different from yours. I rely on Amazon heavily. I do not go out and shop physically. Since my insurance includes money each month for healthy food but only from a couples sources I use Walmart grocery home delivery and everything else is from Amazon- which is also delivered to my home. Amazon allows me to set up subscriptions for items like the filter for the central air- I set it on 3 months and when it arrives I now it is time to replace it. There is a WHole Foods store about 2 miles away but I can order all of the items on Amazon and they are often cheaper and arrive at my home in 2 hours (or less).

Yes, especially in America I think it’s hard to avoid Amazon unless you have abundant money. Which most of us don’t. Amazon doesn’t really work that well in Europe (yet, hope it stays that way). So I totally see how you rely on it. Also, how cool your insurance covers healthy food?!

We have luckily never been sick in our bed, but when my husband had surgery we did have to borrow some sheets from his parents since we did not want to ruin our sheets. I practice many of your suggestions, let's call it mini-minimalist working towards full minimalist. I care for my 88 year old mother and some of the practices I lack are more for her comfort. We do practice 'death cleaning', asking her before I sell or donate if she is comfortable to get rid of an item. A very simple rule I adopted about twenty years ago is not to replace any electronic device such as a laptop or cell phone until it has been used for at least seven years. Why seven years? Because most operating systems can continue to be functional for that period. I use this rule even at work. On my cell phone I don't install apps like insta or yt or any social media because they may slow down the responsiveness or compromise battery efficiency or security. When I have to buy a new device, I generally buy one that is new, but last year's model, and perhaps upgrade the memory after a few years of use. Using this method, I have been using my home computer for over a decade. I stick to the professional line of laptops (e.g., thinkpad) by major brands, because the repair parts can be found on eBay. I am typing this on a 10 year old cellphone!

I've been minimalism for around 5 years now but I was always kinda skeptical to dive into extreme minimalism. You show that it's normal, it doesn't have to take away joy from life and that you always could have less and be happy with it. Just one question, do you also make underwear by yourself? I very rarely buy new clothes and when I do usually it's underwear or shoes.

I've always been pretty 'minimalist' since my early adulthood. But I did it because I used to move a lot in my 20s to experience different cities and states. With that said, I was married to a nice, bright woman such as yourself, and she 'adopted' a lot of my lifestyle of living; 'Spartan'. However, that was MY style, and while she loved me for those few years we were together, I look back and cringe at a lot of things. When it comes down to anything 'trendy', or simply what your husband desires, just be careful that these are also desires of yourself, and not just pleasing a guy. Again, I feel there's a fine line in a relationship between mutual desires, and just doing what a guy says just to keep him happy. In the end, a rich girl can cosplay minimalist for a while, but her family and roots will shine through in the end.

Where to purchase items from if not Amazon ( or Wal Mart)? Sometimes people just need items…like a toothbrush or a toilet brush , bath towels or hangers etc. Giving alternative places to shop would be much more helpful if included. I’m not going to buy a toilet or a tooth brush second hand! Where to purchase ‘second hand tech’ and not get just ‘outdated’ tech and to not get scammed. Especially when a person doesn’t know a lot about tech. And many people cannot afford to replace an item again if it’s not under a warranty and they get ripped off. Lots of that out there for sure. You say you buy a mechanical pencil so you don’t need a pencil sharpener, however, a mechanical pencil needs refills which are kept in a little tiny plastic tube so kinda the equivalent of a pencil sharpener. Not trying to be mean or critical but just pointing out things that seem a little ‘ better then thou’. If not Amazon then where? Where to buy when a person needs a new toilet brush, or hangers or a dust pan or mop etc. Please consider or mention financial limitations and accessibility and physical limitations. For example someone might say ‘you don’t need a mop just use a rag’. That is assuming that ‘everyone’ can work on their hands and knees and using rags just takes much more ‘energy’ not everyone is young or healthy and has that kind of energy/ ability. To say 4-7 items of footwear is enough for almost everyone, is really showing how you do live in your own bubble. I would think that you realize that people on KZbin watch from many other countries other then just your own. Many people live in climates with 4 seasons and within those seasons there are extreme temperatures and elements for many various situations. Just going for a walk one day to the next could require very different footwear let alone those who like to be more active outdoors. Sorry, just a real pet peeve of mine when ‘minimalists’ live in a year round mild climate. I don’t ‘want’ to own as many footwear items as I do but it is a necessity not an option. Let alone coats etc. as well. Just acknowledging these situations would be more helpful and encouraging people to make progress. And give the REASONABLY PRICED AND ACCESSIBLE alternatives! Thank you.

I'm not an extreme minimalist and I also live with a non-minimalist. Socks that just won't be a pair... yup. That's annoying. We have subscriptions though. I don't buy jewellery either. I have my favourite pieces and I love them. I don't need more. I like giving gifts, but I don't wanna give something that's just clutter. So I ask the person what he or she wants. Kind of a list. And some people you just know like "Oh, he loves red wine! Great! I'll buy a nice bottle of that!". I use Storytel a lot. Since getting burned out my focus completely went out the window plus my eyesight is a bit bad. So, I love audtiobooks! So easy to have just your phone and a pair of headphones. Right now me and my family are moving from two places to one (selling two apartments... long story... moving permanently to our countryside home), so our home looks like someone has dropped a bomb of clutter. :S :/ :( But, we're slowly getting our home in order. Decluttering a lot. Thanks for a nice video!

Thanks for sharing!!! Oh moving to your country home sounds lovely 🥰 and I too love giving useful gifts. Food baskets and drinks are normally so good because you can give a person what they like specifically and it will be used up!

@@SagaJohanna Usually, I buy flowers because I know most of our family and friends loves flowers. I love them too. When we’re getting ready to fix our garden, I won’t need to buy flowers. I plan to plant roses etc. Many flowers that are easy to manage since I don’t have any skills in gardening. Many plants just pretty much dies. Except for cacti. Hahaha!

I never buy off Amazon because Amazon & UK town traffic wardens/double yellow lines are the main reasons why our UK highstreet shops are dying.

Yes, and increased traffic for “urgent shipping”, not to mention the awful working conditions for Amazon employees!!

Although I like the message of minimalism, I find it very hard to believe that someone will be happier by getting rid of things that make them happy. I like jewelry, for instance, and books; if I want to buy those things, I will. But it's possible to reduce and prevent purchases of things that don't make sense.
