For me, I have no intention to ever sell my lego stuff, so I don't purchase sets as an investment. It's all just for fun! What I wished I knew earlier was just how much fun it is to bond with my daughter over building lego.

One piece of advice I have (and something I'm trying to do this year) is when buying sets that have just come out, only buy the ones you really REALLY want. Most stuff you can find on sale eventually and having been a pretty consistent fan for 13 years, you run out of space!!!

I love and collect Lego but believe me, if you buy classical items, many designer belts and handbags hold their value and because of constant price increases they gain value. I could sell any of my bags and wouldn’t lose much and on some items I’d even make a profit . I don’t buy expensive designer clothes though, they often lose value, that’s right.

Great video. I definitely relate to feeling awkward about buying Lego at first, especially as an 'adult' but now people always ask me about what sets I'm building or which one(s) I want next. I caved and bought the Disney Castle after wanting it for agesss during lockdown as a project and honestly I think it helped me get through it as I felt productive enough. Interesting what you had to say about boxes (I'm guilty of keeping mine!). Any advice when it comes to displaying and storage? There's so many other sets I'd like to add to my already growing collection but I am literally running out of space (and money probably) that I'm having to be choosey. They took me long enough to build that I don't wanna break them back down!

Been on a kick lately. I love the idea of Lego going all digital but I will say, some sort of keepsake for the instruction link is necessary. I could see giving 2 business cards/trading cards if they want. One for immediate use, that you'd use immediately and one you put in a "collector album" so you know what sets you have after years and years. You could look through a trading card, like, album and see if you wanna build something next

Spotted so many Lego in the background of zoom calls during COVID, so many people love it but just don’t mention it. Alongside buying from sites with a reward scheme, using link throughs from cash back sites is good and paying with cash back credit cards - everyone likes more money for Lego right!

I recently got back into LEGO as an adult, in no small part thanks to the wholesome LEGO community on KZbin, like you, Holly! At first, I just bought random sets I wanted. And I think that's fine - spending a little extra at first so your display shelf doesn't look that empty. And while buying random sets can be fun, budgetting and planning are really important, and can itself be rewarding, and adds a layer of fun and community. How much money do I want to spend a month, on average? What series or themes do I want? Which sets do I want to have by the end of the year? Do I want to collect specific themes, or am I fine with having a "mishmash" of stuff on my shelf? And so on. Also, different aspects of LEGO appeal to different types of people: do you enjoy the building process itself, with large complex sets? Do you enjoy the themes and the collecting aspect? Do you want a nice static display piece, or do you enjoy playsets with minifigures you can pose? (These categories are not mutually exclusive). With time, preferences might change, and that's normal, but always having some sort of "battle plan", with acheivable goals along the way, really does make the hobby easier and more meaningful. This might sound obvious to any veteran collector (be it stamps, hot wheels, books, or LEGO), but it still needs to be said.

Good video but in our experience, the instructions were a valuable asset. My adult son left 2 large bins of Lego which we dug out and cleaned when his young son showed interest. We were able to find one file box of instructions regarding the Black Knights Castle from 1988 and related sets, as well as Forestmen, Pirates, Space, Aquazone and race cars sets from the 1990s. Another file box of instructions has gone missing and while it is nice to have a pile of bricks and pieces, without the instructions we can not put them back together in what likewise could prove interesting sets despite our best efforts. True the instructions in those days were simpler and the books slim but my advice would be to keep the instructions. We also enjoy having some offline activities as does my son for his son.

I agree with everything she is saying in this vid...minus the instructions booklet part (hold onto those, you're internet isn't guaranteed) ESPECIALLY the part about NOT being afraid of admitting you like Lego. I was afraid to talk about it in 5th grade (when it made sense) and I am proud as heck now for getting into Lego. Why? Because during and after college I went through a phase of hosting large get together/ parties (100-200+ people) and at least over 1000 different people in total. No matter who it was, friends, family, acquaintances, or people I was first meeting, NO ONE as of yet has EVER given me nothing but complements on my Lego's. Furthermore, no matter how crazy the events got, 3 different punk rock bands (2 who were on tour), EDM dance parties with my different DJ friends lined up, no matter how chaotic things got....NO ONE ever messed with the Lego's...If anything its peoples admiration for Lego well into adulthood that probably best explains my weird social experiment that I sorta stumbled upon. People admire creativity, and unlike other collectables like dolls or action figures...the thing with Lego is, you have to actually build it. Anyway, I hope this helps!

I must be in real danger: I keep even the parts bags inside the boxes and the sticker sheet templates. Then again, I have devised a storage system for them all and am getting away from paper records by building myself an SQL database for each component indexed by set number, so it is not too onerous. I also don’t flatten boxes, opting to put them inside each other to save on volumes. In a half jesting tone, I fully endorse everyone else throwing away the boxes, instructions et al, so they become scarce and a retirement fund for those of us who keep them. Try finding a classic space or pirate ship box these days! Still looking for an airport shuttle manual for under C$100. All in all, an honest and open op-ed piece. - MeisterDad.

Just out of curiosity why do you regret getting rid of them? Because I have lots of boxes now and not much space. I was going to chuck them.

Since the sets retain their value, does that mean you keep them separated from other parts? Or do you keep them built.

For dusting have you considered canned air? The kind used on computers?

Tell me about it, I have an entire closet full of instructions! Its much easier to google what i want to build rather then wasting 5 hours looking in the piles

I get that but if you know you're gonna put them back together of course that would make it so much harder.

@@toddjalane4192 Yep! When I take apart a set that I've built, I literally just put on all the pieces back in a couple of zip-lock bags - and then put all of the bags, plus the instructions, back in the LEGO box - and then put *that* into the bigger cardboard box that I received the set itself in, when I bought it online (usually among a dozen or so other sets that I bought at the same time; packed nicely and comfortably together into one neat little batch of sets) - and then put it right back in the big closet that I use to store all these sets; inside their original packaging, in their respective cardboard boxes where they came from. Lol if that makes sense. It makes it just soooo much easier for me to sort of "track down" the different things that I'm looking for anyway; because then everything I need from that specific set that I want to build - ALL the bags of pieces, and the instructions, safely inside the nicely kept original box - I then know instantly where is, when looking in at the closet of boxes (even despite having a lot of sets!), because, in a way, they're still *mostly* sorted by the cardboard boxes where they came from (by that I mean, if I bought them in one specific cardboard box, then they'll most likely still be there in that one later, *not* moved to somewhere else), which means I´ll then ALWAYS know where the sets are at all times; because I *always* remember the different sets that I bought, within the individual bigger cardboard boxes, so it's then very easy to check and just know where they all are for me at any time. Again, hopefully that made a lick of sense lmao, my bad if it's poorly explained.
