Remember South Africa is more of a formal retail market whilst most of Africa is more of an informal market. Being South Africa having worked in Nigeria I realized that the average Nigerian would go to the market for groceries and clothing whilst in South Africa one would go to the mall for clothing and to a supermarket for groceries. The food industry in South Africa is strictly regulated in terms of health and pricing thus the government doesn't favour much of the open market.

@@netbuzz600 i am sorry that happened to ur friend, to be honest our country is beautiful and fertile with oportunities but there are also those who do bad things. My advise would be not to travel alone wherever you are, never be in dark spaces or place where there is no movement of people, try to keep flashy things to a minimum until you get acquinted to where you are staying and you will be fine. The most importantis to never travel alone, in some countries you van find terrorists and cartels blocking roads wanting to rob you of your belongings. In SA, one should be aware of cars that follow you for no reason or suspicious behaviors. You cannot be too careless here.

When it comes to crime, it depends on who is telling the story, there are lots of expats from the USA complaining about Tanzania and the abuse from Tanzanians. I'll search for videos and post them the link here later. Crime is every where in the world and a lot of people don't bother to be heros any more so South Africa is not different from any country in the world. There are lots of people from everywhere in Africa and a lot of our African friend have no jobs to support the families so committing crime is not a big problem for them. The same goes for South Africans. Don't point a finger to South Africans because there are more pointing a you. There are fresh foods if you know where to find it at the very cheap price. Its not like south Africa doesn't have markets as you know it from home Tanzania or Nigeria but its difficult to reach those if you don't know where to find them.
@amacheng5952
@amacheng5952 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Norman, thanks for watching my video. For starters my aim is not to point any fingers as mentioned in my video, the aim was to share my experience which I know might come handy to someone out there. With regards to crime, unfortunately statistics and numbers don’t lie so you can’t argue that crime rate is not high while statistics say otherwise but also I shared my story because I experienced it firsthand as well. Again, the aim is not to bash the country, but rather share my journey and I will keep on sharing the more I stay. With regards to markets, yes the more I stay the more I will discover more places which will be shared.

From stats it seems like a couple of cities outrank the JHB-PTA area, namely Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth (I don’t know how to spell its new name). At least regarding violent crime. I will compare Dar es salaam with SA villages, not in a bad way though ill explain... You won't find fresh foods in the City, even if they sell vegetables down the road it will definetely not be fresh, that only happens in the Villages and Village towns. No one will help you in Johannesburg, absolutely no one, they would mug you in broad day light there, people will just pass by and continue as if nothing happened, in Villages that is where they don't tolerate such, if they see anyone stealing anything, the person will just be lucky if he/she come out alive.... With phone snatching, nah, they were not tracking her, that is just how they commit crime, they snatch the phone while the car waits for them then they left

As a South African I never really understood the concept of a market until I went to one in Accra, Ghana. Markets here are typically for middle class people to socialise over food and drinks and some few items to sell or buy. There is "Joburg Market" where most of the fruit and vegetables that are consumed in the city are sold. The produce from the market is brought in by large and small scale farmers. There you can get fresh fruit and vegetables in low prices.

Fresh produce is food that has not been preserved, and was recently harvested or slaughtered. You can find this at Checkers, woolies and food lovers market. Tipping in Canada is 15% and yes it is common practice to always tip, being on time is just plain good decent manners. Sadly crime throughout the world is growing, criminals are much bolder, and yes as a society worldwide we only care about ourselves and our immediate family. We work hard to stay on top of things, while criminals do as they please, and they get a slap on the wrist. I am sorry that your sister got robbed and I hope that your experience of South Africa gets better soon. 2 hours away 😳😂😂, not keeping time is a bad habit globally surely ? As for making friends , give it time but you have to be proactive about it. Don’t be shy. Many people made clicks from work and varsity but socialise more often . There are book clubs on Instagram , attend book launches etc and chat people up . It’s a mixture of cultures so there’s no particular approach but don’t stick to people from 🇹🇿 only , you won’t experience SA fully . 😊

Lawd knows I HATE these videos of comparing SA with other countries. It makes me sound like a lunatic when I usually respond negatively. You dont see South Africans making similar videos when they travel to other Afrcan countries. When we go to their countries we respect their laws, traditions, and cultures. What I dont understand is if SA is so bad and unfriendly, then why the hell come here.

Lord knows you also hate to rationalize and reason instead of just having the perception that they are hate videos. Incase you aren’t aware these are very typical expat/new to the country videos, they are plenty of such for other countries Canada, America, Australia, European countries etc just to name a few and surprise also made by SAfricans. Also Lord knows this page hates pessimists so get a stepping and move on to other videos.

As far as time, I find Black ppl in most places have a problem with arriving on time. We call it CP time over here, but like you said don't do that in professional environments. Love your channel. I've been to Tanzania before and I loved it. Would definitely love to go back and visit. In terms of lack of markets, there are too many malls and grocery shops in SA which have unfortunately taken a lot of business from vendors, especiallyin the townships. Life in Gauteng tends to be fast paced and the grocery shops become convenient as you can find everything in one place. Another issue that we have in SA is our town/city planning is just horrible. I stay in pretoria and over the weekend I used drive to the taxi rank to buy vegetables from the vendors but it became such a hassle that I just gave up. Hope you are enjoying SA so far When it comes to making friends i also struggled when I first moved to Gauteng..and I'm South African. One hundred percent ♥️ , the tipping problem in Johannesburg is very rude , we pay mad high prices for a cappuccino or tea , then also to tip on top of the high prices in a coffee shop where there is not even a view of anything outside and the airpollution in Greenstone Hill is already bad enough too , to sit outside. People here are from one Exteme to the other regarding meeting time. Food is mad expensive in Johannesburg , and you have to shop around , but Foodlovers is decent. . . In South Africa everyone is looking after themselves , expect to struggle for emotional support or being safe , I have been struggling to get my freedom from oppressive Sanlam Trust for 20years , the finance departments in South Africa don't have ethics regarding your freedom or consideration if you are kept hostage by a Curator , don't come here thinking your money is safe unless you have done Plenty of Research and have an attorney who can advise you properly. You posted this a while ago but I saw this now, so here is something I found interesting ... I am a Saffa born and bred, and I worked and lived in mainland China for a few years. While I was there I definitely felt special and there was some "fuss" made - or so I thought. Hehehe! When I was already back in Johannesburg for a while I worked with Chinese people online and I found out much more about the nuances that I was clueless about before. I was told by a Chinese person (and others loudly agreed) that it is customary and polite for them to invite you to their house for a meal. As Westerners we very often accept these invitations and actually this makes the Chinese person cringe inside. They will never ever show this though and so the mistake is made, and no chance exists for us to learn or for them to teach us - there were a number of similar polite gestures which would be better left to quietly die away or even outright thanked but not accepted. From my point of view I can imagine that you are very correct in saying integrating here is very difficult. All the best to you! Oh, and even if it is late - welcome to SA!!!
