In today's video, we're talking about Things i wish i knew when i started model trains. I'm also continuing to work on a HO scale Hopper using Pencil Crayons. Yes, you heard right. Model Train Graffiti with Pencil Crayons! Everyone starts the model train hobby without knowing anything. I don't know the first thing about model trains! Where to I begin with model trains? How do I get into model trains? These are all very common questions. I'm going to share with you a few things I learned along the way that I wish I knew when I started with model trains. I'm also going to be working on some hand painted model train graffiti using pencil crayons. Use these techniques to make your HO scale trains look realistic, or to make your N scale trains look realistic. Great points and work on that car! Love the grafitti look. :-) My tip: Find a mentor and/or a local NMRA affiliated group, someone to ask questions and get advice! I have a couple of friends who took me into their group and I attended my first shows with them. They helped me avoid the "vintage" trap and find good solid equipment to start with that looks good, was DCC equipped and ready to roll. They also got me into metal wheels, good couplers, and good and CONSISTENT track. All key elements to smooth operations. And WATCH ALL THE KZbin VIDEOS YOU CAN FIND! 🙂

To your first point, my mistake was buying so many random things. I'd buy most Norfolk southern stuff but I also got an FEC GP40, and I really liked the CN GMD1, I also like Switchers so I got about 7 of those in the URR scheme cause I wanted to do my own steel mill. That ended up not happening and with N MP15's being ultra hard to come by I grabbed whatever I could when I could, getting all of them with dcc already installed. I've since divested myself of a lot of the random stuff. Trades and selling stuff online. I will say that I'm known in my club for having just the worst luck with new engines. I've had 5 Engines brand new in the box have serious issues. Two scaletrains, two Atlas and the Rapido GMD1. I've had zero issues with Kato and I don't want to even give Broadway limited a try cause I've seen what poor quality they have, and to be frank I don't need any more issues.

Have you tried using calligraphy pens (the fountain pen types) and inks instead of Sharpies? You can clean the tips and also use any ink, acrylic or otherwise. Might save you money and aggravation.

Great video and tutorial of your Graffiti work. I did the same thing months ago with buying cheap pieces of rolling stock to practice weathering and graffiti. It certainly helps bcuz you learn from your mistakes on your own rolling stock instead of someone else's! I also do airbrushing for Grime underneath as well as the sides and ends. I had 15years of experience with an airbrush b4 deciding to do weathering. I like your styles and techniques for Graffiti. Thanks for sharing this video with us along with your time and effort Tim! Cheers from Delmar, Delaware US.

I had a bunch from the 90s, and bought more from ebay when I got back into it last year. I've upgraded a bunch with new trucks/couplers/wheels, but a bunch will just stay as is, and I'll use them to learn weathering and such.

Having experiemented on a few autoracks now, I have to point out that coloring pencils don't work very well on auto-rack cars. They don't have the same kind of smooth surfaces that a covered hopper or a boxcar would have. I've been doing Concor and Micro-trains ones and the pencils just don't work very well on the surface panels, either the metal or the plastic sides. I tried the oil paint pens and they look ok but are very splotchy and downright impossible to maintain straight lines, I'm switching now to thin brushes to see if I can make it look any better. You were 100 on those sharpie pens and even the micron pen lasted a bit longer than the sharpie but now stopped working. That's frustrating. Does anyone make a thin tipped marker that can work on any surface?
@TheyMakeItLikeThat
@TheyMakeItLikeThat 11 ай бұрын
They do last longer if you let the paint cure for a long time. But I haven’t found anything that doesn’t die. It’s just a bad surface 😝

another thing on "minimum radius", don't trust Walthers on their long cars, those 89ft flats will say "Kinematic couplers work with 18in radius", the cars do not. if you run those 89ft cars on an 18in radius you'll end up with a 89 scale ft long shorting device, the wheels will wear the paint away from the metal frame and bridge the rails, boom, short circuit. Ask me how I know.

Absolutely ... I almost fell for "vintage" early on. Used for most dcc is still pricey 😤. I just dropped 400 on the complete Kato BN smooth side passenger set with leds 🤣 ... ... 😥 All for a layout to be established 15 years from now 🤣🤣🤣

I had more experience in model trains when I started ( 8yrs. Old) then I do with this phone I have in my hand. Who came up with the idea ,( that's now spreading into model railroading), that you have to spend an hour on the internet to find how to work this expensive thing I have in my hand, or better yet how to open an HO engine?
