A tip for shifts- you have the right idea for baby #2! We have found it works really well for me to get up with the babies to breastfeed and let my husband sleep.. because him being well rested makes him so helpful during the day. I got to nap while baby napped, he would make me food, do things around the house, and then help with our older boy when we had baby #2. Then he would do some skin to skin for bonding. I know many people feel like the night time shifts should be shared, but this worked out really well for us!

Completely agree! And if there are couples who share night time duty and it works, that's great, but at most I'll ask my husband to do a middle of the night diaper change. He's still getting plenty of uninterrupted hours, especially since we go to bed earlier now.

Same for us! The first few weeks he would get up to help me since I was still figuring stuff out and was healing from a tear and all that, but once I got the hang of it he would sleep through the night. Then in the morning he would take her after I fed her for a few hours so I could sleep, come back for me to feed her then take her again. So we both got a good amount of rest!

26 year old mom of 3 here 👋 my biggest tip for doing feeding shifts is to either have hubby take baby for first shift of the night, immediately following a feed (usually around 8-9pm) and go to bed early for a couple/few hours, he can stay up with baby until 10/11 and then bring baby to you. Alternately, if you prefer to sleep in he can take baby immediately after a feed early in the morning, around 5/6 and you can sleep in a couple more hours! This makes it so you get a few good quality hours of sleep every night but you don’t have to pump! And he gets to sleep through the night while you handle feeds. That’s what has worked for us! Best of luck 🫶❤

No baby here but I am curious to understand better, in the late night shift or early morning baby is not sleeping at all after the feed? Or is it helpful that the dad does it because the baby care like changing/ rocking can be long and make you feel you have no rest between feeds?

I definitely recommend the owlet.. when pregnant I didn’t really think about it and thought it was unnecessary but our little girl ended up being born premature so I asked around and the NICU nurses told us they are quite accurate.. once we did finally get to bring baby girl home it gave me such peace of mind, and honestly the ability to sleep well between feeds knowing that if something sinister were to occur, we would be notified immediately.. used for 10months and only alarmed once when she had RSV which we ended up needing hospital for anyway..

So exciting!! I remember when I was planning everything for my daughter, who's just 2 months younger than yours, and seeing you go though this again is reminding me of that time! :) I can 100% recommend a carrier: Boba bliss. Suuuuuper easy to use, and COMFORTABLE!! it's like a hybrid carrier, easy to put on and off like the more sturdy ones, but super comfy like the elastic cloth ones. Everyone I know that's used it has loved it and recommends it!

Yes, yes yes to baby wearing! I didn’t start wearing my baby till she was about a month old and I wish I had done it sooner. Like you said, I also struggled in the beginning with trying to get things done around the house and Caring For baby when her naps were so short, it wasn’t until I started wearing her, that I started to get more peace of mind and want so overwhelmed with trying to get chores done. It can be intimidating at first. I just watched a lot of videos and tried it around the house. I started out with the wrap which is great but can be a little annoying having to tie it and making sure it’s not too tight or too loose I tried the ring sling and I found those were so much easier to use in public. You can Quickly put them on and adjust while baby is in. Now that I’m pregnant with baby number two, I got a another carrier that allows me to carry my baby on the back now that the bumps in the way . My first will only be 13 months when I have my baby in August, so I’m sure I’ll be baby wearing a lot.

The owlet raised my anxiety even more because of false alarms when the sock would shift in their sleep. But we also had a nicu baby so the false alarms were extra triggering for me. Totally support people who enjoyed it and want to use it, just personally didn’t have a good experience with it.

I use the mobi wrap with my little one. She is 6 weeks old and I have been baby wearing since the first week. Putting her in the wrap infront of a mirror is what really helped me because I could see where to put her legs etc. Also, get Gabe to help you the first few times if you are nervous about manouvering the baby into the wrap. My husband helped me the first 4 times until I was confident enough to do it myself. I have just ordered the ergobaby omni 360, so excited to try that. Don't be intimidated by baby wearing! It'll take a few times to get used to the the long fabric and ties, but I really love how cozy and comfortable it was for baby and I. We loved the baby bjorn carrier for when we are out and about. In my opinion, shifts don’t work unless your husband does not stay in the room. Mine took first shift and gave baby breastmilk bottles of milk that I had pumped during the day and usually one bottle of formula. I would go to sleep around 8-9 and pump right before going to sleep and then he would stay in the living room with the baby. Then he would roll her in around 1-2am and I would get up with her the rest of the night. He is a light sleeper so he went and slept in the other room so he could get uninterrupted sleep as well. It worked seamlessly for us. My baby did not have a good latch so I would pump after feeding her a bottle when she woke up the first time. I knew I did not want to have to pump through the night so I wouldn’t pump unless I woke up and needed to before she came in but I don’t think it even happened. I also pumped first thing in the morning. But if you breastfeed then you wouldn’t have to worry about the pumping and it would be even easier!

Absolutely love the owlet! It gives me such a peace of mind when my baby makes a weird noise. You get live HR and O2 levels. It is super easy to use and the baby doesn't mind it. You don't have to worry about waking the baby to check on breathing. I have also found it useful now that the baby is in the nursery, because an alarm will go off if the baby is moving too much. I honestly don't know how I would sleep without it.

It’s a little course and there is SO much information in there that just isn’t taught by the medical system but it makes SO much sense!! Thousands of mums have SWORN by this, and say it diminishes nipple trauma so much and makes breastfeeding that much easier! My breastfeeding journey didn’t last super long with my first unfortunately so I’m soo looking forward to trying this method and praying that breastfeeding will work this time! Baby wearing is a game changer!! We used the Boba wrap a lot when our babe was 0-5 months (we still sometimes use it). We splurged and got the Wildbird Aerial carrier-absolutely amazing! We had an Ergobaby one and it was super confusing. The Wildbird is comfortable and so easy to use. I can put it on by myself front and back wearing, it’s amazing. I’ve heard good things about the Artipoppe too!

The ergo baby embrace is the best baby carrier! It is so easy to put on and is a soft structured carrier.

Artipoppe baby carrier is THE best carrier. My baby melts into it and it’s the easiest and quickest baby carrier to put on! The fabric is amazing quality hence the price, but it’s machine washable and they have the cutest styles!

I loveddd the boppy comfy fit for the first few months bc it’s similar to a wrap carrier but so much easier to use and not intimidating at all haha. And then I love the Tula for a more structured carrier when they’re older and it sooo comfortable and supportive of your back! And once again, so easy to use!

I loveeeeee wraps with newborn floppy babies! They make doing things and holding them soooo easy! Then once they are bigger and can hold their head up I LOVE the Ergo baby carrier. It’s soooo easy and once you have it all set up to fit you.

I didn't really like anything other than wrap carriers! Loved them. Recently got a hippie joey carrier. I wish I had this during newborn stage with my first. Sooo fast/ easy!! I will be using this for sure with baby #2 in August!!

I also watched Bridget Teyler during my pregnacy and gave birth to my first unmedicated in June 2023. Like you, i also had a quick and smooth labor so I'd definitely go unmedicated again for my next. Highly recommend Bridget to anyone. Wishing you a healthy and smooth delivery 💕

I had my first a month after you had Makaiah and I feel the exact same with everything you pointed out for the second baby. You realise that buying all of the things recommended by everyone can actually be overwhelming - having to figure out how to use everything and store it and clean it! I’d like to go as minimal and simple as possible for my second because it’s less work! Regarding carriers, I personally like the wrap carrier for a tiny baby. Once my girl got to around 8 months, it wasn’t as comfortable any more and I felt the same way as you with the big bulky carriers, they’re pretty uncomfortable especially for at home. I didn’t end up continuing with baby wearing so don’t have any recommendations unfortunately.

Artipoppe is hands down the best carrier. It’s expensive but worth it. I also loved the solly wrap for when my daughter was first born.

Jess, idk if you’ve looked into Silverettes for nipple pain while breastfeeding, but after breastfeeding/pumping for a year, I can say these were 1,000% worth it and made a world of difference! I started using them day 2 in the hospital, and they healed my nipples so much faster than nipple cream. It was also nice to have a barrier to protect my nipples, since it was painful when anything rubbed against them. I wore them for an entire year, and I would recommend them to anyone!

I struggled with finding a baby carrier as well! Mostly in finding one my baby liked. The one I ended up liking the most was the Ergobaby Embrace carrier. It was comfy for both of us and not too difficult to figure out!

I had my son a week after your first & I’m pregnant now as well! 💗 The Baby Bjorn Mini is the easiest to use until they grow out of it, afterwards I would look for a soft structured carrier (currently on the hunt for one as well) because the structured Ergo Baby that I had was not as comfy or easy to use on your own!

The Ariel buckle baby carrier from wild bird is a godsend! You can wear them in it from newborn until they’re nearly 1! It’s adjustable and super easy. I will say, I used the moby wrap for the first few weeks just because they’re SO little. I loved that one too! Just took practice

Tik tok was the best for showing how to baby wear! I had a baby bjorn carrier I loved, the boba and moby wrap were both great and so comfy, and then an ergobaby one which wasn’t as comfy or supportive as the baby bjorn! I really want the artipoppe carrier for my next baby because we baby wore ALL THE TIME!
