TL; DR: Sam as Lestat is probably the most perfect Lestat we will ever see on any screen. YES, Show!Lestat and Book!Lestat are sympatico. Long Answer: I haven't read all the books in a looong time (except for Queen of the Damned which is a perpetual comfort re-read for me) but I can state that Book!Lestat and Show!Lestat are so damn perfect together. Like. It's uncanny how well Sam portrays Lestat, especially when you're deeper into the books and you see the little call-backs and mannerisms Sam puts in the first two seasons that don't make it into the Interview book but are very, very much a part of the book The Vampire Lestat. Example: Lestat straight up says in TVL that he has a loud laugh that he can't contain and you see that in the scene in season 1 where Louis and Lestat are dicussing Annette, the mistress. Lestat is so dumbfounded, uncomfortable, and yet happy that Louis is jealous all he can do is laugh. It's not cruelty, as we are meant to think. It's an emotionally immature and unavailable dude with no idea what to do next, so he laughs! Anyway. You have remember that the books were written starting in the 70's and popular writing styles have changed DRASTICALLY in that time frame. I, personally, love the lush descriptions Anne uses - but that's what I grew up with! Modern writing is much more lean and action-driven; the Vampire Chronicles are long and philosophical and kinda self-pitying? Still worth reading, imo, but not without caveats. If you pick one up and like it, great! Mazel tov! If not, there are 50 bazillion wiki articles that will get you caught up on the lore without 6 paragraphs about the pattern of the hall carpet on which someone in bleeding. ;D
