My own experience - don't be an arrogant American - put your passport in your back pocket and obey their rules, don't get into deep political discussions, be polite, learn the greetings of the day in their language, do some specific research of each place you visit so you will know ahead of time (like tipping waiters or not). This will help you go far anywhere you go.
