Whether it's people touching your hair, assuming you like to twerk, or treating you like an "exotic animal" on dating apps, black women regularly face a variety of racist and dehumanising presumptions. Here, eight women relate their experiences of the stereotypes they've faced - but also the strong sense of sisterhood they feel as a result.

@@meftnm "exotic" is offensive, as it others black people. In addition, people deemed "exotic" have had a history of being hypersexualized and fetishised (hence entire porn categories for Black or Asian people, geered towards the white male gaze). Asking people "where they're (really) from" is offensive for similar reasons, as it implies that the person can't possibly be from the predominantly white area they're being asked that question in.

Because society knows that if women, especially black women ever rise up and act on all their rights-- to vote, to assemble, to learn, to be happy that NOTHING could stop them! Its suppression of a population that the dominant class fears.... Be aggressive, be classy, be powerful, and rule the world-- Hell Be Michelle Obama! That's why she dealt with so much hate-- but she was classy and powerful when she let that shit bounce right off of her and kept doing good things! Someday people will realize that the amount of melanin in their skin and the genitals between their legs doesn't determine the amount of respect a person should be alotted.

Mentioning race in a "compliment" immediately takes the value out of it. Instead of saying things like: "you are so pretty for a black girl!" Or for a white person: "you have a big butt for a white girl!" Say things like: "you are so pretty!" Or for a white person:... don't say things about peoples butts.. thats weird. Friends have told me that the strong black woman trope is especially damaging because it makes them feel as if they aren't allowed to show a complex rage of emotions that all humans experience. It's really sad.
@tabitha8232
@tabitha8232 5 жыл бұрын
madamebutterfli00 It completely is. And more than that it makes everyone see us as masculine. Even Kevin Hart said that dark skinned black women can take a punch better than “soft” light skinned women. We aren’t considered feminine, aren’t considered worth protecting, and certainly not considered beautiful.

"Makes them feel as if they aren't allowed...". So they are allowed, but just feel like they can't? Nobody controls our emotions but ourselves. Time to take responsibilty. Time to give less fucks about what other people think. Most of the time people assume someone else thinks something they aren't thinking, also. Lots of mind-reading I noticed. Big waste of time.

I was also dating a woman once who was black and she said "its so nice to find someone who finds black women attractive". I thought that was quite depressing cos every race has their own beautiful qualities. People need to stop stereotyping and defining people based on their ethnic origin. No one was trying to imply anything negative about US BW. It's just weird that British people's only point of reference for how to interact with UK BW is from observing Black folk in America. They don't even notice or realise that we aren't identical, even though we live in the same place. Tell me, wouldn't you find it weird if some random person said: "Where your ends at, fam?" or "Catch dat peng ting?", and expected you to know what that meant because Black Brits use those phrases, and your DNA should magically give you the answer or make you identify with it. Even on a micro level, there's a slight difference in culture between black folk e.g. in NY vs GA.

No one is always strong. Black woman are people. Everybody is human and no one deserves to be dehumanised or have jokes made about them. Yes you are strong everyone is strong as a human but not all the time. If you don’t feel strong that is perfectly ok. We don’t need to g9 back to the stereotype of you’re not strong if you need help or if you show your tears or if you’re struggling. People struggle and black woman arent any different to any other human being. So why are they being treated differently? Stereotypes and people who believe it’s ok to base someone on what they look like or sound like make me so annoyed because a person isn’t just the exterior that everyone sees, they are also a person inside as well and humans have a personality each to their own. It’s 2019 come on people get over your self prejudiced and arrogant self and move on to the more important matters like equality or people being allowed their own opinions or global warming.

To be a Black woman is for everyone to assume that you are being aggressive when you are going out of your way to speak as calmly and softly as possible, like you're trying to sooth a defensive animal.

It irks me when non-Black people, specifically white people, call us "ghetto" or "ratchet" for using Ebonics/AAVE, but then they turn around and use it themselves like they didn't just insult us for it. Also, can we talk about how all of the women are gorgeous? ❤️

I personally think black women are beautiful, and appreciate their friendliness and openness. Conversation s I have had with black ladies are special, in fact when I go to an event I will look deliberately to sit down next to a black lady to have a conversation, I find black people in general more approachable and more open to talk to, years ago went to a church in Edinburgh , and there were a lot of black people there and I thoroughly enjoyed their fellowship, and conversation , the prayer time was fantastic less formalistic and open to Christ, just always had far more positive communication with black people. So for all the black people out there, I appreciate you.

I've never had a child, but I'm appalled at how many people think it's okay to touch a stranger's baby bump! We need to none of us be touching others anywhere on their person without express permission. I mean, why do people do this? Are we all just starved for human touch? Maybe if we went back to shaking hands with everyone we meet, we'd stop taking unfair advantage of people with less social power.
