In this episode I am trying to make it to the border of Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire. The jungle ride is fantastic, until I encounter a stretch of road which becomes worse and worse. This is the day that my ride through West-Africa changes drastically.

I am from Liberia. This is what corruption looks like folks. When money is allocated to fix roads and they are diverted, this what happens. I am sorry for my poor country. Admire your strength Noraly. All the very best on your journey. Come back and see us again. Hopefully that road would be fixed by then 🤷🏽‍♂️

@@peleqetelo8734 sadly it’s the only way to the Ivory Coast from that part of liberia. She should have chosen a different route but she chose to pick the most treacherous route. Nice little mention in “The Atlantic” magazine Noraly. Did you see? “An online creator who I’m a fan of: “Itchy Boots,” also known as Noraly, rides her motorcycle around the world, traveling solo and skillfully making videos documenting almost everything, including mundane border crossings and soaring panoramic drone shots. She gives a ground-level view of life and landscapes in so many places, offers interesting background information, seeks out local stories and experiences, and has an overall good and cheerful attitude that helps her navigate sometimes-difficult circumstances.”

Yes that amazed me. Her handle bar mounted camera captures the guy riding the bike. Her hlemt cam captures some of the rest but one clip looked she was operating another camera hand held. And she keeps up with the bikes walking through that mud and pushes bikes. Awesome coverage and editing of that sequence. If Noraly wants to stop riding ever she will easily find work as an editor or even a producer. Da best.

This story has nothing to do with Itchy Boots but more with Liberia and is funny. A friend of mine, Ron, graduated from a "very high" school for engineers / car technicians in the Netherlands. The H.A.T.S. Apeldoorn. It was about 1960. He got a job at the Firestone Rubber Plantation in Harbel, Liberia. He was shopmanager of the shop where all machines that were needed at the plantation were repaired and serviced. To make some more money Ron wanted to go to the Port of Monrovia, to assemble trucks that arrived by ship. But how do you come to Monrovia? By Honda CR 300? Well, the priest in Harbel had an idea .....he sold Ron his Piper Cub Airplane. And he gave Ron flying lessons. So from then, Ron flew, every weekend, from Harbel to Monrovia in his Cub, over the tree tops. I think with one or two of his mechanics. Freedom the Liberian way. But after a few years of flying and assembling, Ron fell in love with Joke. He married her and she came with him to Liberia, But.... under ONE condition......Ron had to sell the Piper Cub. Too dangerous flying over the tree tops of the rainforest , Joke said. And as all men know: the man is the head of the family but the woman is the neck......and when the neck turns, the head goes with it. Funny right?

19:13 "Easy on the engine" while her both feet got literally stuck in the mud and can move her lower body. That must be a very stressful situation. Your bike has someone else on it, you are in front of the mud stuck and you're waaaaaay out in the middle of basically nowhere. Engine might fail, ankles might be sprained and if she faceplants down into mud with all that gear and both feet stuck, she might become a permanent landscape down there unless someone pulls her up. Very high endurance and strength mentally to be honest. Cool. She really is strong like that gentleman on the bike said.

I worry Alaska won't either! My guess was the noise was a stuck valve but, realistically, the odds say it was an automatic cam chain tensioner. If the cam chain is loose, it can be nursed along with a steady hand on the throttle and keeping the revs low. Get too much slop going and it can slip a few teeth making it out of valve timing. It didn't sound quite right to me when it was cranking at the very end of the video. Hopefully she's not stuck in the middle of a sea of mud with an Alaska that can't run.

Can't imagine the difficulty just walking through the mud weighted down with riding gear. Heavy breathing. Noraly could barely walk through yet still goes ahead to help push another bike. Noraly stretches out her arm for a pull to get her own body unstuck. The man obliges and stretches his arm....more than once. @@jamesvandemark2086 Exactly. While initially she didn't want him to ride that far, I suspect she would have fallen so many times, she would have been completely exhausted. Don't mean this as being disrespectful of her abilities. Long legs/light narrow bike & momentum are only solution to that type of mud. Once you slow down, chances of a tip over greatly increase. Every tip over fouls the grips, gloves, etc. It snowballs form there. Mud like that isn't exactly fun although ANY time on your dirt bike is better than being in the office.

Noraly, you are amazing, and you show good people are everywhere. These guys were so helpful. I remember once in the States, my car stopped with a flat battery. There was a gas station 50 meters ahead. Three black guys were sitting on a step watching me. I asked them for a push. I can't write here how colorful and insulting their response was.

That's too bad. Yes, there are good people everywhere. My friend's car stalled on a rural highway in Missouri or Arkansas, amongst fields of sugar cane in the humid summer heat. A black farmer in a rusty pickup pulled over and asked if we were all right. He gave us a ride to a good mechanical shop. That was in 1987. Now with modern technology, people drive right by and figure "it's on you if you don't carry a smartphone" :-(
