And distance is out of whack between these two great nations. . When I lived in Lancashire for a bit, I had to drive to London for business. The entire street waved me off like Lindbergh taking off from Roosevelt Field. They were all speechless when I told them that I'd be back early that same evening. I grew up in Brisbane where Sydney is a 12 hour drive away and Townsville a 16 hour drive. And Townsville is still in Queensland! We get visitors from the UK who really don't comprehend how big the place is and that when an Aussie says "let's nip down to the beach for a swim" that could be a two hour drive away. The key difference being that in Australia, driving from Brisbane to Townsville, at least 12 hours of that will be sugar cane fields. Driving to Sydney you're in for 10 hours of wheat fields. While in the UK, even a modest drive to the shops for some wine gums and you'll likely pass 57 Blue Plaques, a Roman road, two Norman churches, the roadie for the Who's grave site, the Aston Martin factory, a WWII airfield, the lot where they filmed Auf Wiedersehen Pet, a Hovercraft Museum, the site of the Battle of Cheriton and 32 pubs. So if you're a tourist, it actually take four times longer to go anywhere in the Uk, stopping every 500m to look at every point of interest, than going 900Km in Australia at 110kmp on an open, featureless highway.

Yes, in England they think 200 kilometres is a long drive. My auntie once visited us here in Australia and wanted to go for a weekend trip to Ayer’s rock from Adelaide. She had no comprehension of the distances involved in such a journey. So naive on travel times.

@@arnolddavies6734 I found that you have to geographically break it down. Driving from Adelaide to Ayer's Rock is the same distance from driving from London, England to Warsaw, Poland. The drive will feel much longer, as it is so hot and desolate, you might not see another town for five straight hours to stop and rest, and you'll be driving for two straight 13 hour days to get there.

Not a lot of people would remember this, but the FREE ambulances in Queensland started in a little place called Gympie. The Superiindant of the Gympie Ambulance came up with a scheme where they payed something like 5-10c a week from their wages, deducted by their employer and paid into the "Ambulance Scheme" the wages wern't all that great back then, but the saying is "you never miss what you don't receive" and it worked a treat, Back then (Lotto as we call it now and it was the Golden Casket) paid for all the hospitals and finally the ambulances if I remember correctly. So, the Super of the Gympie Ambulance was the bloke that started all this off.. I'm 82 going on 83 but i still remember this so clearly. When I was an apprentice, I paid 6pence (5c) into the fund and when I became a tradesman the cost went up to a ridiculous 10c (1 shillling) a week. There ya go, a little old-time trivia. 🤣😁🤣😂😇😇

Well they are not really free,us residents pay a levy that is snuck into our power or water bill I think,but I would rather that than the other way.

My biggest pet peeve is when people don't walk to the left and walk 3-4 abreast and these days with more people being obese it's the walking equivalent of passing a road train.ggrrand I live in Qld where in the 7Os old Joe made it illegal to walk more than 2abreast,the lines are still on the footpath in a couple of places in the city.For anyone who doesn't know this law was enacted to stop people protesting .😅

In Canada, u have to park in the direction of traffic. Some diagonal parking exists as well. If you park against traffic direction, u will get ticketed.

Qld'er here , point 1 , you can get a digital drivers ( note the S ) license which can be on your phone so you don't need to carry a card necessarily , point 2 , re. ambulance cover , if you reside in Qld but need an emergency ambulance while out of state , you will still pay nothing , all Queensland residents are automatically covered for the cost of emergency services Australia wide. .

Another Queenslander here. There are still places that will not accept a digital copy of your driver's licence. One of those being the Treasury Casino in Brisbane. Eventually it will become normal to have a digital copy of your driver's licence, but we aren't there yet. I look a lot younger than my actual age and still occasionally get asked for my ID when buying alcohol or going to the pub. Anywhere that sells alcohol is required to ask for ID if you look young (25 or younger). Most people think I'm around about 26 which is hilarious to me because I'm 38.

Parking in the direction of traffic ensures you can be seen at night, especially in places with no street lights. You don't also get confused if a street is one way.

No it doesn't 😂. It has to do with idiots who can't operate a car at the best of times trying to exit a parking spot through 2 different directions of traffic. Most people can't even navigate a roundabout or merge correctly Or people who are idiots and cut over 3 lanes of traffic to take a turn off instead of just taking the next exit (which would be the safe option) could you imagine a busy main Rd and someone trying to get out of a parking spot parked the direction of oncoming traffic🤦‍♀️ whilst a car turning headlights on at night on opposite side of the rd on a small suburban St is somewhat temporarily confusing that's definitely far from the reason

In Australia, they say "No, you're alright", meaning don't worry if you feel like you've done done something wrong. I lived in Sydney for about 15 years and the people are a lot more 'closed' than Melbourne. I never got to Brisbane, because I'm not a fan of humidity. Sydney was humid enough. Sydney people avoid eye-contact, or talking to anyone if they don't know them. Melbourne people are a lot more open and friendly to tourists.

Yep. Australian who moved to London here. "Are you alright?" or 'y'arrite?" consistently threw me. Because my initial spoken response would be "Yes. Why??" meanwhile my brain would be racing "Why are they asking? Do I not look alright? Is there something wrong that I don't know about?!!" That's because "are you alright?" is an expression of concern, not a greeting to an Australian. You only ask someone if they are alright if you suspect they might actually NOT be alright and you wish to enquire about their wellbeing. For example, you've just witnessed that they have fallen over, or look ill, or something ambiguous but possibly bad or negative has happened. You ask to confirm if they are okay. It's not blanket, automatic greeting. Also, taxi drivers and Uber drivers literally just pulling up to parking spaces or dropping me off on the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the road, in front of oncoming traffic in the UK - WHAT THE HELL! I was like "I don't want to die, pull up on the left, I'll cross the road!" or "Do a u-turn FFS" Nope, despite being relatively normal drivers and also driving on the left, in the UK, they have no qualms about drifting onto the right to just drop passengers off willy nilly!

Every household had a charge added onto their electricity bill to cover ambulance. Political pressure was put on govt when electricity costs started rising so they scrapped the surcharge but never started charging for ambulances again.

IBIS (bin chickens) come in three (3) varieties white with black head, black wings and head and all black. I have the first two in the open green areas near me and never seen them in a bin locally but in Sydney where I work they seem to have moved in there about a decade ago after the bad drought and adapted as scavenger. There's a very funny KZbin video made in a David Attenborough style about bin chickens. They were actually nearly extinct and a breeding colony had been established at Taronga Zoo in Sydney. One night, a big storm hit and destroyed the nets keeping them in, and they got out and started breeding like mad. Now they're everywhere. Also, rounding down and up prices is so much better than ending up with pockets full of tiny coins. I just came back from a few weeks in England, and being handed coins was such a pain. I'm old enough to remember when they phased out the one and two cent coins and the rounding really confused people for a while.

I find it quite amusing the east coast call them bin chickens. I live near the Canning River in Perth and the Iris are just one of the many water birds, never seen them go through rubbish bins. A flock will land in a tree at sunset so when the sunset lights everything up as orange the Iris look like Xmas decorations. One thing they will do is perch on your roof overnight. My neighbour built a new home with a grey roof tile. The roof now looks like a snow capped mountain. On parking I was amazed in France people park anywhere they can including on round a bouts. That's not to mention how many cars had crumbled licience plates. It's just different culture but that makes it interesting.

Come to S Africa where you also need to pay for private security and use a private postal service and pay that same private postal service to buy government forms to renew licences. Also private hospitals.

The driver licence thing you mentioned in the UK at about 11:45 isn't actually that different in QLD. The UKs Road Traffic Act Section 164(6) makes it an offence to not produce your driver licence when requested. -164(8) gives you a defence against the offence if "within seven days after the production of his licence was required he produced in person at a police station that was specified by him at the time production was required" Queensland's Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000 Section 58(2) requires you to produce a licence on request. Failing to do so is an offence against section 791. -Section 58(3)gives you a defence against the offence "by producing the licence to the officer in charge of a nominated police establishment or police station within 48 hours after the requirement is made" Almost identical. Still a good idea to carry it on you. :)

Re Licenses: I thought most of the country if you are on a full unconditional license you don't need to carry it while driving, but have to present with it at a copshop within 48 hours if requested by police. But Kudos for using Coopers as the beer example (if you're getting it for $54.85 you're doing pretty well - I think it's about that in SA where it's brewed, but the normal price elsewhere seems to be about $60.....).

You completely misunderstood how the 5¢ rule works. 9, 8, 4 & 3¢ round up so you lose out, while 7, 6, 2 & 1¢ round down so you win. A small number of shops(I can only name 1) always round down but they are not required to.

You forgot to mention RBT. The biggest driving complaint I’ve heard from English immigrant is that the Police had the audacity to breath test me twice in the last year. I’m NOT a professional driver, I just drove a lot to/from work average 50,000 km/years for well over a decade. When they first rolled it (RBT) out for the first decade they targeted many main roads in volume, these days not so much. I stopped counting how many times I’ve been tested, but it’s well in excess of 200 times as I stopped counting well over a decade ago. As I could tell you all the regular spots I got pulled over at regularly I.e. being tested going to work and on the way home again from work. I’ve also never attended a Christmas party without leaving my car at Home and have had to present my licence over a two dozen times so know that law. P.S. you can load you licence on you Services NSW apps here, which can at least get you out of trouble. NSW in Oz

"Just buy a slab" Good advice on the 6 pack thing but it does get my goat the upsell or "special price" like buying two for the price of 1.4368 of a single. It's like dude I just want 1 don't make me do math and run an extra fridge/freezer for the stuff I can't get round to this month. Used to see 2x6 pack deals where it went like 1 sixpack = $20, 2 x sixpacks = $32, Slab (4x sixpack) = $58 so the math wasn't so hard. I used to also have a local bottleshop where I could buy a case upfront and just grab a six pack or two as I wanted them at the case price, he had a little note behind the counter to keep track of me and other regulars like that was worth the extra few bucks over Dan Murphy for that level of service.

With ambulances in Western Australia, you don't pay if it's considered an emergency. Say you get chest pains and call an ambulance. They take you to hospital, do some tests, you didn't have a heart attack but it was still considered Urgent, so no charge. If however it was something less urgent (I don't want to give incorrect examples but say maybe a broken collarbone?) then if you don't have insurance, it's about $900. But if you also had a punctured lung, that'd be urgent, so no charge. I guess it's designed to stop people calling ambulances for every little thing and making them unavailable for actual life-threatening emergencies.

You got both of your examples for the 5c rounding wrong 😀 Amounts ending in 1, 2, 6, & 7 get rounded down to nearest 5c. Amounts ending 3, 4, 8, & 9 get rounded up. And who uses cash now anyway? I've used cash a total of about 4 times since the start of the pandemic - mostly for private sale transactions where they didn't want to do a bank transfer.

I feel like a clarifying pinned post on this is warranted. EFTPOS/Card takes the exact amount from your account but cash you can get that 2 cents in your favour. I use cash/card 50/50 and if I'm paying for fuel in cash I'll always pump that extra "free" 2 cents worth lol. Also Aussies generally find 5 cent coins annoying and leave it with the shop or their little charity bin near the till. A lot of Aussie local shops will have one of those little donation coin things just not in your face pressuring you to donate.

They are definitely not that cheap most of the time. Normally sit around 4.99 for that punnet. Also don't forget nz just like Australia have to import a lot of things from around the world. It's the shipping costs that are passed on that kill us. Also NZ has I think from memory 12.5% GST where as Australia only has 10%

Your wrong about the change thing, partially anyway. Its rounded to the closest 5c. If a grocery bill costs $16.04 then you pay $16.05, but if it costs $16.07 then you also pay $16.05 and if you give $16.10 then you should get 5c change. But if it costs 16.08 then your expected to pay $16.10. All this predicated on you paying cash. If you pay by card then you pay the listed price, no rounding, although there might be a surcharge.

Some subcategories ARE covered (pensioners, others) but for the majority it’s a (small) added cost to pay for ‘Ambulance Membership’ (in some states) that really shouldn’t be a thing at all.

If you want to live in the suburbs of a modern city, living in Australian cities is much like living in UK, US etc. Climate will affect your comfort however. The presenter accurately reports that just about everywhere in Australia can be hot in summer. The main difference is humidity (tropicality). Perth, Adelaide and even Melbourne get hot but it is a dry heat. Sydney, and even more so Brisbane, can be uncomfortably humid. Darwin is hot and humid year round and most Europeans from temperate zones find it hard to tolerate. Humidity is mostly a north-south thing, but it is also highest on the coastal strip, lessens if you go inland.

I dont think I have come across yet a video of yours about the public education system in australia. It's very ambiguous, how much it would cost to put your kids thru school there. It may make all the difference in one's decision to move. We live in Malta and state education here is totally free, I am a stay at home mum by choice and we have 3 kids. So moving to Aus for us would be to offer a better future for our kids but I dont want to have to work full time and get a smaller property to be able to afford to put 3 kids in state school. When you think about it, the parking thing makes sense as you'd have to have driven the wrong way on that side of the road to get to the spot. When I moved to the UK and was looking for a rental in London, everything was based on 'pcm' which I'd never heard of before. I figured it must mean 'per cubic metre' and, since they never said in the ad how big the place was in cubic metres, I was buggered. Eventually someone told me it meant 'per calendar month', which seemed very odd to someone used to seeing weekly rates

Wheni look at overseas things that price stuff at per month i have to get a calculator out to make it p.w costing.... so i know wtf it costs😂. I don't know why anything other then a gym membership ect would be per month. As for electricity thats quaterly, then water is 4monthly (wtf to that one from an aussie). Most car and home insurance used to be only payable yearly back in roughly 2006 ish. Car rego here in NSW you can now pay 6mthly (about time) house /land rates are quarterly. In NSW you can have your licence on your phone in the Service NSW app. However, I always carry the physical licence because I don't like the idea of possibly having to hand my phone to a police officer.

My mum and dad emigrated in January 1966 from London to Canberra and dad went and bought a brand new car, a Holden of course. Anyway January is bloody hot here in Canberra regularly seeing 40+ deg and the car salesman asked him if he wanted a heater fitted. Dad said no and wondered why would he want a heater, until winter arrived. Canberra is renowned for have freezing winters, regularly getting sub zero temps -6 -8 so dad went back to the dealership and had that optional heater fitted. Yes, those little “fine fuckers” are hiding everywhere ready to pounce so watch out for them. I have been let off for not having my licence with me, and like you said, I just had to drop into the station and show it later, it just depends on what mood mr plod is in.

Ambo service is free in QLD. There used to be a surcharge some years ago but then they scrapped it. Just checked my bill to confirm. Also, supermarkets are not allowed to sell alcohol in QLD (and SA), including Aldi regardless of their size.
