There is an excellent video on this subject on the KZbin channel premier lawns. Some things that I have learnt: Conifer hedges always take longer than you think, especially tall ones. Always charge appropriately for taking away. If you end up with say £10 to £15 an hour after tax and national insurance and all your business deductions, just remember you have no pension, no sick pay, no emergency leave, parental leave, annual leave, public holidays and no guaranteed wage every month. Good luck and enjoy your journey, I am now two and a half years in and still learning everyday.

I was wondering, when I watched your recent hedge trimming job, how you priced for jobs. My brother in law is a handyman and his wife always complains that he undercharges lol. Must be tricky though. As you say, you want to be reasonably affordable without undercharging for your skills and time.

It's hard especially when you're just starting out. I still don't really know if what I'm charging is correct but it's working. I just ask myself what I'd be happy doing the work for. A standard daily rate may be somewhere in the region of £120-150 (other people may charge more or less!) And then work out how long it will take and try to roughly work it out - but that's a fairly basic calculation and obviously some other factors have an impact on price. It's maybe best to price a few jobs a bit higher and if they get accepted then maybe stick to slightly higher prices. It seems to be a bit of trial and error

@@TheGreyGardener1990 I would happily pay £15-20 an hour, depending on the kind of job being done. Your rate seems spot on to me. Unfortunately, as I like to garden, I end up doing all of the jobs myself (with my hubby) and so it's us that have the sore backs in the morning haha. Good luck to you with growing your business. You certainly have the right attitude...It's so important to turn up on time, be polite and do a good job.

@@Tess-FrugalLiving thanks so much. Yeah, I think it's best not to undersell yourself. As I say on the video people seem prepared to pay a little extra so they don't have the hassle of doing it themselves. Good luck with it all but I'd definately test the waters on the next few jobs and price a little extra to experiment 👍

Hi mate. Just want to say, your an inspiration the beginner gardeners who.want to go out there and start their own business. A tonne of information and if I've watched your video twice I've watched them 15 time. So here I am starting out , went and quoted a few jobs . Fortunately I've picked them on the nose except one. Which is basically a landscaping job on a medium garden. Lift transfer and lay stones and on bare area over seed level etc. I quoted £375 which I hope I can do in or around 15 hours. She is buying the materials. This will all be done by hand. She said she thought that it would be around £1500. I know for a fact after rethinking what needs done , I've totally done myself. So the question is. Do I leave it as is in the hope she sees I do a grand job and maybe double it. Or be cheeky and say I've totally quoted you well under the price for all the work involved Hopefully I'll be also making videos ( as I don't see anything like your videos for scotland )at all as you say prices vary from place to place. Can I give you a mention and link your pages dude. Looking forward to future videos. Keep up the awesome.e work mate Jim Angel garden services 😎 Ps found this page, that may help. www.yourtradebase.com/blog/estimates-vs-quotes/

Hi there, kind words! By all means give me a mention 👍 In terms of the job, I've done this a few times where I know I've undercharged and have just stuck to my price. But it's probably not on the scale of the job you're talking about. She probably won't pay you double so you'll have to make a call I suppose based on how hard the jobs going to be. Maybe you could ask for a little bit more. Say you've messed up, I'll have to add a bit on but I won't charge you the "full whack" and see if she goes with it? It's always a tricky one!

@The Grey Gardener cheers for the reply , yeah I was checking between quotes and estimates and quotes can legally stand whereas estimates is just a guess and subject to change. The woman seems cool enough. So pretty sure she'll be alright and throw an extra few pounds my way, I've already saved her on skip money so all good. Going to see her next week. So will keep you updated and thanks again mate and wish you well.

@@jamesflannigan1039 as long as she's aware it's an estimate is probably what I'd say, just pre-empt it a bit that the price might go up.

It's probably not a good time to come here. Have you explored employment prospects in your own country vikram? Studies have found that living in a homogeneous environment can be a huge benefactor in mental well-being...not that I'd know, indian gardeners coming out my lugg holes here 🤣 good luck expanding your business in india

Hi Adam, hope you and the business are doing well! Sorry to be a pain but I do have some questions for you. What research did you do before going it alone, and how did you finance your start up?

Hi there, this video might be of use kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYaopKWlmN11e5o In terms of research, I'd done friends and family's gardens a little bit before I started so I knew what I was doing gardening wise (on most jobs!) I watched gardening channels on here and picked bits up too. Finance wise I used some of my savings to start up. Worked out the back of my car at first, bought some new, some second hand gear. Then invested more as I grew and got more customers. Its been a gradual process really

@The Grey Gardener that's great thanks very much, I really appreciate your response! I worked in lawn care for 18 years so I'm fine there. Also done some hedge trimming, not an expert by any means but I can make a hedge look nice and neat. So I thought I could start there and hopefully gather more skills and knowledge as I go.
