In 1999, I went to Horseshoe Bend. Somewhere between 1pm-3pm in the month of July. There was only one other person during that time. No fee either. The best experience I had in Paige was taking a guided tour on the Colorado River from the base of Glen Canyon dam to Lee's Ferry. Spectacular adventure. Also, take a guided tour to Rainbow bridge on Lake Powell. Do it!!!

Thanks for the tips, excellent video. We are going to Page next week. We have reservations for the lower canyon. Tours are limited to 50% capacity due to Covid so we're hoping it won't be quite so crowded. Also, I noticed you had some drone shots of Horseshoe Bend. Did you have any problem flying it there? Technically drones are off limits in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and the Navaho Nation.

Hopefully it won't be crowded! Antelope canyon is so great. The drone footage was from a long time ago before the drone ban was put in place. Now it's completely off limits to fly there.

Denver is a great place! Red rocks park, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Black Canyon, and the Garden of the Gods are all places to consider aside from the typical museums(which are also great) and cityscape of Denver. If you're feeling really adventurous Arches National Park is within driving distance, though I would advise staying overnight near there.

A couple of tips (I've been to the Wave etc. multiple times), very familiar with area. The Wave hike is much more than the Wave. Be sure to plan a whole day, 10+ miles. Climb above the Wave and also climb one up some of the large rocks you pass on the way in to the wave. I found a small pond on top of one and some Wave like patterning of erosion. Houseboats are the big thing on Lake Powell. Alton Point overlook is a great one. on Lake Powell area. You missed all the really beautiful spots...just as well. no need for beginners in most of them. Coyote Buttes is large. There of many hikes besides the Wave Escalante/Grand Staircase is chock full of amazing hikes. One of my favorite days was a solo hike all day long on Yellow Rock. Not nearly as ornate at White pocket or Cottonwood cove, but somehow just a really superb location. Remote. A close and easy access hike are the Toadstools. Just barely off the road so very quick and easy access between Page and Kanab. If you explore Escalante or Vermillion along House Rock Rd, believe the signs that they get impassible when wet. Stay out of Wire Pass and other slots on days with rain in the general area. Remember flash floods can start well upstream. Carry food, water (lots) and a shovel in a 4WD high clearance vehicle to access places that are remote, or if you don't know much about the desert, hire an experienced guide to take you I've photographed various sections of Antelope. That is one that I would put low on the tourist list. I got to wander around for hours by myself in that slot, but those days are long gone. If Antelope is definitely your deal, then remember the light beams are only in summer at midday. Make reservations for a photo tour accordingly. Enjoy!

@@hoangpham it looks permanent. They have a video on their page that shows the whole walk. On the far side they built stairs and catwalks to get you back over the hill to the entrance. I've never been there, so looking forward to it.

People go to Horseshoe Bend before they open in the morning and fly their drones. Very many people. When I was there, there were 3 drones doing that before the place opened. This was about 3 years ago with the no drone sign there.

Antelope Canyon - theres also Canyon X which has both the V shaped and the A shaped parts, it's cheaper and less crowded and you can get some really good photos

That's awesome! Antelope Canyon is open currently and you do need a tour to go into Antelope Canyon. It is best to book online in advance to make sure you have a spot and time as they do run out of spots frequently. Tours for the lower antelope canyon are separate than the upper antelope canyon.

I was just there last week. We rented a JetSki ride Lake Powell marina and we headed out to lower antelope Canyon. It was not crowded and it was simply amazing. I hope this sheds some light on some people.

We paid approximately 245 bucks for four hours. It was worth every penny. My only recommendation would be to make sure you keep an eye on the time when you return them. Because there are two time zones over there because you were close to Utah. There is an hour difference. So I returned my WaveRunner one hour earlier. Lesson learned put a timer on it and don’t rely on the time that it actually is.

I've been reading about the severe drought in the Southwest. Did you find that the lower water levels in Lake Powell affected boating and other activities much? I will be visiting the area in September, so I'm curious if they will still be offering cruises, etc. on the lake.

@@newenglandlight8724 I did not experience that. The water is pretty deep. You will have an amazing time. Bring sunscreen and lots of Chapstick. And be aware of the two time zones in northern Arizona. Because you’re close to Utah. And they have their own time zone. In case you are renting a WaveRunner. And you don’t return it an hour earlier like I did. Because I didn’t pay attention to the different time changes

Thanks! I stayed at the Home2 Suites by Hilton. The town is fairly small so you can stay pretty much anywhere and get around quickly.

The Wave is a major want for photographers. The first time I was in the Page area in the early 1980s, there was practically no restriction on location access, apart from the hike being a bit of a challenge. For reasons I later regretted, we skipped The Wave for other locations. In later trips, the major restrictions on the number of daily visitors and the uncertain ways available to lock up a hiking reservation make that trip nearly impossible to plan, as he notes. The Antelope Canyons no longer permit photo tours or any practical photography, apart from being packed with tourists to clog your photos. If you want to just walk through, it's like waiting in line at Disneyland. If you want to take photos, forget it. I am thankful that I "been there, done that" at these locations before they were turned into commercial tourist attractions. Having destroyed Upper and Lower Antelope for photographers, they "developed" Canyon X in the same area. It presents a decent option for tourists and photographers alike, without the crowds.

Are you talking about the wave and getting a permit? It's quite tough indeed and requires getting pretty lucky on their online lottery system or going early for the chance at an in person permit. The rest of the vermillion cliffs national monument does not require a permit and can be accessed via highway 89A.

I think it depends on what kind of experience you want. If you want to see the more popular canyon with a chance at seeing huge light beams then the upper canyon is the way to go. However it is very crowded. Canyon X is a more personal experience where you can more easily get photos without people, atleast compared to the upper antelope canyon. I think the upper canyon looks cooler and for photographers this is a must see and I think canyon X is less stressful and a more enjoyable experience. Hope that helps!

great work you put together. do you have suggestion on camera setting for upper antelope canyon with tour group that means without tripod? i noticed you have a Sony in your video, i tried the Sony but its auto ISO keeps at 3200 while using manual setting on shutter( b/w 1/60- 1/250 s , because no tripod.)and aperture( F/4-5), will this work inside the canyon?

Those settings should be fine. If you want a lower ISO make sure to shoot in RAW and you can get a lot of detail out of the shadows in post. The canyon is very dynamic with changing light conditions quickly and with every turn so it can be challenging but you should have time at each spot to stand still and take several shots so you can try different shutter speeds to make sure you have a good shot. In the lower antelope canyon I was able to get away with F4, 1/100 shutter, and ISO 500 handheld. I also did bracketing where the camera takes several photos some over and some underexposed to merge in post into an HDR image to maximize the detail. Hope that helps!

I did plenty of handheld bracketing in the lower antelope canyon. Handheld each shot might not be perfect but as long as the change is minimal between shots, then your software in post should be able to merge it just fine. I mainly use lightroom to edit. The canyon itself is very dark so the camera with auto ISO is probably trying to bring up the shadows. If you want to use auto ISO you can reduce the ISO max limit. Which camera are you using?

We have limited time and only 1 night in Page (late September)…do you recommend taking both tours same day? Both tours are 1 hour each?

The tours are closer to 2 hours logistically. You can do both in the same day. The Upper Antelope Canyon tour is more on time, the Lower one can be delayed due to congestion in the canyon. You could also do one of the tours in the morning before you leave. Personally I would do the Upper and Horseshoe Bend on one day, then the Lower canyon the next morning.

Yes you can! You can either rent one or take a tour boat down the Colorado river. You'll have to start elsewhere and make your way to horseshoe bend as there is no location to get in a boat at the bend itself.

They are near each other. Lake Powell is the reservoir area behind the Glen Canyon Dam. Horseshoe Bend is a bit further down the Colorado River past the Glen Canyon Dam.

@@marychieng2553 Upper Antelope Canyon is a kid friendly hike and is about a half mile. You have to go with a Navajo tour group and the pace is slow to allow everyone to take pictures. It is very flat and easy.

It depends on how you like to travel. A group tour will make it easier and less stressful. If you go by yourself it requires more planning but you have more flexibility. There's nothing wrong with going on a tour group!

i just get back from lower canyon today. I don;t suggest bring expensive equipment, there are sands falling onto you all over. tiny sands will get into your gear and you will regret it.

It's a shame these things become so focused on money that it detracts from the experience of everyone, especially photographers. I've been waiting for over a decade to come out here, only to learn there's no way I'm going to get the shots i've been dreaming of. Nobody wants to see crowds here, they want to see nature.

It is true, popularity is a blessing and a curse. If you want the iconic photos I would suggest going during off season and during the week to maximize your chance at getting that dream photo.

You don't need a permit to go to the wave. Easy to look up directions online.

this is not true. a quick search of visiting the wave without a permit and you will see there are fines along with posts of rangers patrolling the area and checking for permits.

You pay a fee because they protect it. If not, the people who went before you would have destroyed it! Many humans do not respect nature and would hurt very beautiful natural things that if someone does not protect, others would never get the chance to enjoy it.
