Antelope Canyon is a place of magic and wonderment located in Page, Arizona. The narrow walls and winding paths mesmerize visitors as sunlight flickers through the cracks above and dances on the curvy walls. The smooth sandstone provides a canvas for the light to illuminates the vibrant palette of earth tone colors.
This is a treasure of the desert! Unfortunately, to see this unique place requires a steep admission fee and a Navajo guide leading dozens through the cramp space.
In this video I am going to share a secret and alternative way to see Antelope Canyon for free (well, almost free). If you are looking for some amazing things to do in Page Arizona on Lake Powell, this kayaking adventure to Antelope Canyon will definitely fit the bill. This is my experience accessing this incredible natural wonder, I hope you enjoy. Please leave a comment below if you have any questions.

These slot canyons were literally cut by periodic flash floods. When you access them, bypassing the tribal supervision, there is a risk in Spring and Fall/Winter that you can find yourself down in a slot when the accumulated flood waters from rainfall a dozen miles away comes through. In that case, just kiss your ass goodbye, as did a dozen German tourists who got caught like that about 25 years ago, even though they were with a supervised tour group and just "upstream" from where this video was shot. The guide and one or two tourists survived. They were picking up "floaters" in Lake Powell for weeks. Always check the area weather first.

One of my favorite things of the trip, right after moonscape overlook at sunrise. i have a picture at pretty much the same point as 1:25 of your video. the far away wall has roughly three colors (dark, brighter and then dark again from top to bottom). the water level now is slightly below the line where it changes from brighter to darker red.

I am thinking about planning a trip to see Antelope Canyon very soon. If you take the Kayak can you get to the upper and lower Antelope canyons? I heard if you take a kayak through you can only get to see canyon X. I would very much like to visit all parts while I'm there because it's a far drive, but I don't want to pay for a tour. Thanks in advance and thank you for sharing this video!
@RoadTripTravel
@RoadTripTravel Жыл бұрын
Because the lake was so low when I did this video, it was a bit of a hike to get to the slots, so I don't know how far it is until you get to the end of the lower canyon where one of the tours takes place. You cannot reach the upper for sure. If you don't wait to pay, this kayak trip is a fantastic experience, you'll see a wide open canyon, then as you hike further in it turns into a slot. It's not quite as dramatic as the tours, but you have far fewer people to contend with as well. I would recommend going as early as you can as in the summer months it will get crowded. Anyhow, I hope that helps. Have a great time and thanks for watching. Cheers, Mike

How far up the canyon can you go? Do you eventually run in to the tours coming the other way?
@RoadTripTravel
@RoadTripTravel Жыл бұрын
Great question! I went quite a ways, but have no idea how far (when you're in a slot, you have no perception). I don't see why you would not eventually meet up with a tour group, but there may be obstacles you can't overcome. For example, if you saw the part where I was climbing the ladder, if that had not been there, I don't think I could have gone any farther. Would be fun to see how far you can in fact go. Thanks so much for watching, and, for your great question. Hope you'll check out some of my other videos. Cheers, Mike

Looking for more information. After leaving your kayak how long was the hike to the slot canyon?
@RoadTripTravel
@RoadTripTravel 23 күн бұрын
Hi Kathleen! Well, it all depends on how high the lake level is. It is higher now then when I went and is going to continue to get higher for another month or so. I would say the canyon starts to narrow into a slot in about 15-20 minutes of hiking. Then you can go as far as you want, enjoying the waves of the slot along the way. Thanks for watching, hope you'll check out some of my other videos. Cheers, Mike

@RoadTripTravel
@RoadTripTravel Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don't think the legislature has passed any laws against it, but it is possible that the Navajo Nation has a no trespassing sign as you get close to their tour area. I did not hike that far. That said, many people do hike this and you'll see some amazing slots, perhaps not quite as remarkable as what you would see on the tour, but it's also free. The tours are over $100/pp. This part of the canyon is in the National Park system, so yes, you can enter without a Navajo guide.

You are not getting to the point where it costs to go. Simply because it’s separated due to the highway
@randallstewart1224
@randallstewart1224 3 ай бұрын
@@greatdane145 The Lower Antelope empties into Lake Powell. If you start at the Lake, you have a flood plain to transit to the lower end of that slot canyon, distance depending on the lake lever. I've never done it, so I have no info on the travel distance up that slot to where the tours enter at the top end, by that is basically at the highway. From there, you cross the highway and face a three mile distance to the lower opening of Upper Antelope. This is basically deep, loose, sandy river bottom, so it's a brute of a hike, assuming the tribe will let you do it. The tour groups use large, off-road trucks with all terrain tires to plow through that part.

Can you hike up to where the land tours take you into Upper Antelope Canyon?
@RoadTripTravel
@RoadTripTravel 5 ай бұрын
It is the same canyon for sure, but there may be some vertical areas that are impassible. I came across one, but someone had put a ladder there. Since you're in a narrow slot, you could come across a vertical area that would be too difficult to navigate. Sorry I don't have a definitive answer. While I hiked quite a ways in, I did not go all the way to the tour area. Thanks for watching, hope you'll check out some of my other videos. Cheers, Mike

Hi, Mike! Thank you for the video. Do you know if we're allowed to bring our own kayak?
@RoadTripTravel
@RoadTripTravel 2 ай бұрын
Hi Gisele! My pleasure, thanks for watching. Absolutely! What you want to do is go to the Antelope Point boat ramp. There is plenty of parking, but you'll want to go to the end of the boat ramp, drop off your kayak, then move your car to the parking lot. Currently, the water level is about 20-25' below the boat ramp, but you should be able to lug your kayak to the water if you have two people. Then, it's just a short paddle to the opening of Antelope Canyon. Once you reach it, it's a very calm and peaceful paddle. It will take at least 30-45min to reach the end (depending on the lake levels), from there you can leave your kayak behind and go for a scenic hike. Be sure to wear shoes, it can be very hot on the sand. By June (after the snow melt up north) the lake should be high enough to open the boat ramp, so it will be even easier to get your kayak in the water. Hope you have a fantastic time. Please check back and let me know how it went. Cheers, Mike

How far is the hike to the canyon from where u left ur kayak?
@RoadTripTravel
@RoadTripTravel Жыл бұрын
Oh, it depends on the lake level (which is currently increasing) and how far you want to hike. Once I left the kayak it was an wide open canyon for about 15 min, then it started to narrow into a slot. I did not go as far as where the tours start, so I don't know how much farther it was. Hey Barbara, this is where I rented my kayak at Antelope Maria. There are often people who rent at Antelope Point boat ramp, which is closer to the opening of the canyon, but with water levels so low the past year, it has been difficult for renters. However, the water is rising fast, so depending on when you visit, there may be options at Antelope Point. antelopepointlakepowell.com/kayak-and-sea-doo/ Thanks for watching, hope you'll check out some of my other videos. So I just finished the same route. First of all it’s not free. How can it be free when you have to rent a kayak? Second you have to pay 30 bucks to enter the park to get to the marina … and this is not the „normal“ antelope canyon where everybody makes the pictures. It’s still very beautiful but you didn’t even show the beautiful spots.
