Turns out I got something wrong. The manual says to turn the fork adjustments all the way CLOCKWISE to zero them out, then turn them ANTI-CLOCKWISE by the specified number of clicks to get each suspension setting. Shock adjustment is as I said in the video. Turn clockwise to the last perceptible click, then anti-clockwise by the amount of clicks specified.

The little screw on the rear shock im guessing is for damping? Is the preload also adjustable?
@SuperFrodo95 Жыл бұрын
@@ConstantThrottle1 Yes. Though I found I wasn't able to turn the preload further than a couple clicks up, as the tool just wasn't gripping the teeth on the adjustment collar and I couldn't get the tool to a different position. The collar and tool are both cheap, stamped metal.

Hi from the UK, Brill informative vid! 👍 I gave up on owning 1000cc+ bikes two years ago (after 32years) due to getting bored with them, sold my 2018 R1200GS and bought a new 2021 RE Himalayan, never looked back, i have commuted to work through two UK winters now, loaded it up with camping gear for week long trips, done motorway/freeway miles at 60/65mph and just love it so much that at now being 56yrs old it will be my lifelong keeper 🥰 BUT! and there is always a but, due to really loving the rider to bike engagement that smaller cc bikes give you, i am going to order/buy a new 390 adv this week, which will be my 'lil bad boy' days off work ,fun bike in the garage and will also be my full time touring bike, leaving the trusty Himmy as my all weather commuter bike 😁 loved the vid mate, you have another sub! cant wait to see your adventures on the 390 💪

Can't say I've experienced much else offroad other than a WR250R I rented for an Adventure riding course. But so far it's done what I've asked of it and I haven't dropped it during the few cheeky times I've taken it offroad, so I'd say I'm pretty happy. It's a fantastic road bike too, really easy to ride slow or fast. I've felt much safer on it than my CBR250RR. You definitely have more fun on a motorcycle when it's easy to ride. I took it through some twisty mountain roads in the Grampians with the suspension dialed to "Sport" and it was great.

The head lamp adjustment is a real hidden feature. Just came to know about it while installing the electronic cruise control switch. Australians are lucky to have McCruise. Getting the unit shipped to India Costs an arm and a leg.

Say what now? There's an electronic cruise control mod?
@virajvrooms11 ай бұрын
@@SuperFrodo95 Oh yes. McCruise (Australia) if you are fine having a seperate switch and a more polished system. I am working with Veridian cruise (Canada) to get their module run on the Indian version of the bike. Good thing is you can use the KTM 790 combination switch so it looks and feels like an OEM fit. Not so good, it is still in its initial days.
@SuperFrodo9511 ай бұрын
@@virajvrooms I had a look at MCCruise and it's pretty cool. The engine in the 390 uses a fly by wire throttle, so in theory all you need for cruise control is a wire going to the ABS/Speedo and a wire going to the throttle servo with a controller in the middle. Obviously KTM won't do it on anything smaller than the 790 etc. because then no one would buy them :P

I use KZbin everyday and I actually have read every single comment on this video. Everyone has been incredibly kind and I was kind of shocked how well-liked this video is that it's unfortunate KZbin content creation isn't anything I'm interested in. I just felt like making a resource that I thought would help someone make a more informed decision on a motorcycle I had been researching for weeks before buying one for myself. I've not been able to do much adventuring, but a friend of mine who actually helped me check out the 390 I bought has got one of his mates into adventure riding as well, so we're hoping to do more riding including moto camping sometime. Doing it solo is a bit risky. Even the relatively small 390 feels big when you're exhausted and sweaty and the track is rutted out. Having a couple friends with me made me realise just how important it can be to do harder off-road riding as a group. So I haven't had many opportunities to do much adventuring. We are planning to do more sometime. And perhaps then I will have some more things to share. But it won't ever be anything motovloggy. I prefer to just enjoy riding rather than juggling recording equipment. That said my channel isn't focused on any one thing in particular. If I upload something it might not even be motorcycle-related.

Hi, I think the ride modes are like my 790 ADV. The ride mode adjusts the sensitivity of the throttle grip. In street is 50% throttle grip equals 100% throttle position and in offroad 50% equals 50%. For better control in dirt and more agility on the street. Greetings from Germany.
@SuperFrodo95 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it does affect throttle mapping. If it does it's very minor because I haven't noticed a difference in power. With such a small capacity engine, they might not have bothered with it. Whatever it is, KTM doesn't seem to really tell us what it does...

Hi mate, awesome vid and cheers for the observations, definitely some stuff in there that other reviewers haven't spoken about. Especially thanks for the heads up on the turn-by-turn app and motourenn! A couple of comments to help clarify/correct things: - According to the dealer here in NZ, we get the European model for these bikes, so I would assume Oz is the same? - I've got the KTM engine bars on mine and they do a surprisingly good job, to be honest. I dropped the bike from stationary once on each side (one gravel and one asphalt), and got away mostly unscathed other than some scratches on the factory hand guards. I did have a big roll bag on the pillion seat that probably helped with these drops though... - The 'zero' point for the fork adjustment is all the way clockwise (not anti-clockwise as you stated), with the indicated clicks for various setups being anti-clockwise turns (pg 59 of the manual) - DCBA already mentioned the wheels but I'll also do so to for completeness - the 2022 onwards model get the 5 'spoke' (or 10, in 5 pairs) cast wheels which are claimed by KTM to be stronger vs. the older 6 (or 12 in 6 pairs) wheels. The properly spoked wheel version is a chunk more expensive, so I opted for the new cast wheels, on the basis that I've got no intention to jump it/take any properly hard hits. Thanks again, great stuff!
@SuperFrodo95 Жыл бұрын
Wow. You're right about the fork adjustments. I've had it wrong the whole time. No wonder the + and - seemed like they meant the opposite things. I'll see if I can change it in the video so that it's correct. Oddly enough when I've had the bike on the stiffer sport setting it's felt fine, but on comfort it felt too bouncy. Maybe it will be better with the correct adjustment.

Thanks for sharing everything you learned. FYI, it does look like the older models can update their software, both ECU and display. I am debating an older model or its Huskie cousin that pretends to be a scrambler.
@SuperFrodo9510 ай бұрын
That ADV Japan guy had his KTM dealership update the software on his early model (white and orange scheme) and it works just like mine now. It's easily doable by the service guys but I don't think they do it often so they might be confused or outright say they don't do it, but they definitely can. My friend has the 401 Svartpilen and it's very different but also the same. The 390 ADV is more upright and comfortable, and with the footpegs and bar riser I put on it's very comfortable to stand on. The Svartpilen is more like a dirt bike but it has pegs that are thin and far back, so it's very hard to stand on stock.

I've been thinking of doing another video later on down the line focusing more on the changes I've made to my bike, and the things I've learned. Maybe something going over other aspects of riding like the specifics of getting licensed where I live, things to think about when choosing a motorcycle, stuff like that. My idea is to try to dispel some of the fog surrounding less discussed specifics of motorcycling rather than repeat what all the big names say. I'm not very wealthy, I have to make each dollar count. So when doing a hobby like this if I have a problem I can't solve it just by throwing money at it. E.g. just one pannier bag costs more than all my camping gear. But a 20L dry bag from the camping store is $30... But I likely won't do motovlog-style videos. I don't think talking points while riding is even that safe, and it's a whole set of rather expensive gear that I'd have to buy.

Speaking about external differences... You didn't mention the new cast wheels for the '22 model? They are redesigned and much stiffer in comparison to the older models. @SuperFrodo95 Жыл бұрын
You're somewhat correct. The 390 Duke doesn't have compression adjustment on the suspension, but the caps on the forks are different compared to the Indian 390 Adventure, so I don't think it's the same part. Maybe the Indian 390 Duke also has different suspension to the ones here. I'd be more inclined to believe that KTM is just trying to make the 390 Adventure a little cheaper in India. I imagine it's main competitor is the Royal Enfield Himalayan, which doesn't get adjustable suspension anywhere in the world. Personally I'd think it would be better to stand out with adjustable suspension, even if that comes with a higher price, but I'm not KTM India.
