They’re all great 👍 The most trouble free are the 2003+ years with the updated engine and transmission (2003-2006). You can also go with the Supercharged model if you’re looking for something truly special 🙌

I have an X351 XJ and an X250 XF. These cars are reliable. I've had Lexus, BMW, Mercedes and the Jag is as reliable as those cars if not more in some cases. The feeling you get driving one makes those others feel like cheap Fords. If you want one, don't be put off by people, who have probably never even owned one, saying they'll break down. They won't.

I saw one years ago on the front page of a car magazine & loved that bonnet & E Type nose. Having to give up the motorbikes, I wanted something special on 4 wheels & remembered the XK8. I did my research & bought the 4.2 litre motor in a black 04' coupe - with low mileage & no rust. Have just replaced the front shocks & nice yellow top plates as well. Tis a pleasure to drive.

Cool to see a new XK8 video pop up. I had a 97 convertible almost 10 years ago and have always missed it so just picked up a 2006 coupe with 38k miles. One of the cleanest I've seen in awhile but it did need upper strut bushings like they all do lol already fixed it though.

@@HernanSpeed thanks for the response. Part of why I love them so much is when I was 14 years old, I went to a Jaguar dealer with my mom to buy a used chevy they had. When we were there she sat in a brand new XK8 and we were so impressed and kind of blown away but it was never realistic, felt like the dirty poor people sitting in a new car being impressed. lol Well, since then I've been very fortunate in my life and career to have purchased lots of dream cars of mine. Going back to this old Jag has just been a personal reminder of keep working hard and even bigger things can pay off.

I had a 6.0 V12 XJS for about 12 years before my XKR. I also suspect my XKR may be the fastest car in the country with hand controls (I use a wheelchair all of the time). There used to be a quadriplegic chap somewhere near Liverpool who had a 200mph car he drove just using his mouth, tongue and cheeks. I knew the guys who did the adaptations. His car was in their building when I borrowed a wheelchair from them after mine was stolen in Germany. But that must be about 20 years ago. Any idea how I might find that out@@HernanSpeed ? Ta

I love that people think these cars are still junk (especially after Tata Motors took them over in 2007), which makes them depreciate a ton which in turn has allowed me to own a couple of nearly $100k cars for penny's on the dollar. My first Jaguar was a 2010 XK and now I own a 2015 XKR, they're the most beautiful head turning reliable cars that I've had out of over 80 or so! I've had a plethora of high-end cars that are usually gone in a year or so because I get bored, had the first XK roughly 3yrs and going on 5yrs for the XKR. My 2015 has had both the upper and lower pulley changed along with a tune and it's pushing nearly 650BBHP (up from the already hefty stock 510hp undersized upper and lower pulley), which allows this old grey haired grandpa to whoop up on a few of these kids, lol PS; And it's a Daily Driver!

Jags are FAR more reliable than Bimmers and Mercedes. I currently own an XKR, XJ8 and an XJ12. I have owned a series 1 E-type, an XJ6 and an XJS 6.0. All were reliable and faults were simple fixes. I replaced the coils on my XJ8 myself $200, the XJ12 needed the main ground cable contacts cleaned to remove galvanic corrosion, the rack bushings on my XJS 6.0 were $200 and I used poly bushings. The XJ12 can sit for 2 months and it starts the instant the key is turned. I love Jaguars, but am disgusted with the styling of the sedans (saloons) after 2009. Recently on a BAT auction two, sub 25K mile 2009 Portfolio XJ8s sold for $156,000 and $175,000.

Thanks for the info. Truly appreciate it. A gentleman is selling a 2003 XK8 100k miles. Very clean interior and decent exterior. he purchased a few upgrades for the car but lost interest and no longer wants to deal with it because he wants to shift his attention to another car (Mercedes). I would have to finish installing a new top. Top hydraulics need to be refilled, and also needs the catalytic converters as they were stolen. Good news is he has all these parts and are included in the price ($2,500). I am not sure if I should even bother to go look at it in person… what do you guys think?

Had a 2001 XK8 coupé back in 2008/9/10. It was a beautiful moneypit. There was always something going wrong - ABS module failed, coolant reservoir leaked, tensioners needed replacing, relays always malfunctioning... I even had a differential issue which took repeated visits to the Jag garage to fix. Never had to replace any bushings though. Undoubtedly one of the automotive design greats, and better than its successor IMO, but caveat emptor!

Thanks for the great video! A few things to add....there are added costs owning the the XKR to XK8. One being the Brembo brakes are more expensive to replace. Also the CATS suspension is more prone to break and also are more expensive to fix. With having a Supercharger....it’s something additional that will need servicing like all the vacuum hoses. Also, anything underneath the supercharger that needs replacement is very time consuming to take it off. So in turn, the XK8 is cheaper to run.
@HernanSpeed

Yes, especially after 150k miles when parts should be refreshed. I’d say the biggest cost difference is tires, the XKR definitely goes through tires faster 💨💨

@HernanSpeed

That’s one of my favorites with the updated bodywork! 👊💯💯 Ford sold Jaguar to TaTa Motors in 2008, so most of the Jaguars XK150 engineering/investment was carried out under Ford’s wing. Things like the transmission were outsourced to ZF, they make transmissions for BMW, Porsche’s, Mercedes, and even Kia’s! Your car is the newer X150 platform with the 5.0L AJ-V8 Gen III. It’s essentially the same engine as the older 4.2L, but enlarged (parts are not interchangeable though). This 5.0L engine was also used on Supercharged Range Rovers. The transmission is the updated version of the one mentioned in this video, the ZF 6HP28. It’s an incredible transmission that takes a lot of power! 🚀🚀 If you take care of it, you’re XKR should last you forever! 🙌🙌 Mr Blake Simmons thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

But their prices can vary depending on location, for the exact same part. If you need a specific part, get quotes from different dealers around the country(most do next day shipping). I think you’ll find the prices to be comparable to American/Asian cars. Scott McCown thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

i also have an xk8 here in miami and your on point with everything you said! i have the restricted performance message and i cant find out what it is, everything is working normally and all i have are 2 faulty sensors, could that be the cause or should i replace the ignition coils?
@HernanSpeed
@HernanSpeed Жыл бұрын
Yeap, it very well could be! Just one bad ignition coil will send several faulty messages to the OBD2 scanner, because a misfire causes everything to run bad. With the XK8, the coils always go bad. Changing coils is easier than changing spark plugs. Just remove the cover, it’s 2 bolts per coil….they just slide out. If the car is a keeper, buy all 8. If you’re going to sell, then just buy 1 coil and test as you change them up. Thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

Congrats! Yes, that year has the ZF 5HP24 transmission. It’s shared with many other cars, the main issue that is as the valve body wears…it makes spikes in pressure, this can mess up the A-drum & D-drum. Some people have the valve body modified to have less pressure. If you do a search in the Jaguar X308 forums, you’ll find answers (X308 has same trans as the XK8). Not many have done the mod, is it worth it? I say enjoy the car! 🙌 Most people don’t have issues, just don’t abuse it. J Paz thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

Probably not so much of an issue where you live, but in the uk for example, the biggest issue with these, is rust! The lower rear quarter panels and sills rot for fun on many and its one reason for most being so ridiculously cheap to buy! £3000 or less can get a Coupe and interestingly, here, convertibles are worth quite a lot more than Coupes, generlly speaking! As for reliability, my first experience of a XK8 really wasn't good. Every single warning light was on on the dashboard as I drove it to a local Jaguar main dealer to be diagnosed! The poor thing hadn't had a good life! The last one i drove was better, but was suffering sith electrical gremlins where the central locking wouldn't always work and the immobiliser and alarm played up and it kept going off! Still, Id Love one! Id avoid the cheapest examples though as they are usually very rough around the edges! Spend a bit more to get a good one!

Hi from Miami! 👋🏻 Staying away from beaters is always good advice, and especially cars with rust. These XK8’s are galvanized, so if you see rust…something happened. Either it was in an accident, or it was jacked up by an improperly placed lift. Metal is metal. You mentioned your first XK8 wasn’t a good experience, it happens. But you also said it had lived a rough life and was full of warning lights… I wouldn’t blame the car, it was a car that wasn’t cared for. As I point out in this video, everyone needs to stay away from the ‘deals’. There are no deals. Find a nice one, and pay what it’s worth. You’ll have an incredible experience 🚀🚀💯💯 R1CH130 thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

Hi! Great video! Trying to decide between 2008 M6 convertible with 27k miles and a 2012 Jag xkr convertible with 51k miles. Both priced at $32k… both one owner cars with great maintenance.. what’s your opinion?
@HernanSpeed
@HernanSpeed 4 ай бұрын
Both are great driving cars, but that Jaguar takes the top spot for reliability alone…. also better driving. The BMW will be problematic, especially with the cooling system. The electric water pumps don’t last, and the plastic water pipes leak(common BMW issues). Expect random warning sign’s from the plastic sensors that break with age. The 2012 XKR uses the new X150 updated platform, it’s a very modern car except for the infotainment screen….it’s slow/laggy. There’s also no way to upgrade it because it’s integrated into everything. If you can live with it, it’s an AMAZING CAR! 🙌🙌 I would also try to get those prices closer to the mid 20’s. If it’s a dealership and they won’t lower on the price, have them through in a solid 6-month warranty. Colton Bowman thanks for watching!🔥🔥

Hi👋🏻 A hard reset is disconnecting the battery, then touching the positive/negative terminals together (no battery⚠️) for 30 seconds. To reset the window module in the door: 1) Close the door with the car turned on. 2) Toggle the window down(opening) and hold until you hear a click. 3) Then repeat closing the window all the way up and hold, until you hear a click. This resets the window modul. Only 2 things can be causing this: 1) A low battery. 2) The switch in the door handle that causes the window to drop an inch when opening. Both are relatively easy fixes. Ben Leone thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

The restricted performance kicks in when there’s a misfire, it’s so that you won’t keep driving it. I would guess it’s a coil, its very common. No way a daily driver! I owned a 2001 XKR convertible for 13 years, towards the end I could not keep it out of the shop. I babied it and it didn't matter, never ending fault codes and problems. This model has endless TSBs and my car ended up with all of them. The XKR has more TSBs than the XK8 including the mystery fried second fuel pump wire which is nearly impossible to diagnose (no error code, hard to diagnose), and the factory super charger gasket that gets sucked into the engine. The XKR has WAY too many engine hoses that all eventually fail, there's DOZENS that fail and spray coolent. My mechanic replaced them in groups and each groups was thousands$. A rear bearing going bad was confusing the computer and the transmission would dangerously drop to neutral on the highway WITH NO ERROR CODE, that took forever to diagnose. EVERY jag 8 cylinder engine before 2003 should have been recalled. I replaced the secondary timing retensioner with metal, it jumped the chain anyway (just starting the car, not driving). I could not find a Jag mechanic in S FL that could figure this car's problems, I should have brought it to this guy. I loved the car then learned to hate it. When he lifted that hood in the video i started getting anxiety flashbacks. After the engine failed from the timing chain i donated it to charity with only 70k miles. This guy is right about it easily gaining a shitty ride from the suspension in no time, the $7000 optional 20" Detroit wheels ( the absolute best looking for this model) makes the shitty ride even worse. Best looking car i ever had.

Sounds like you had a mechanic issue, not a car issue…. Some mechanics cause more problems than they fixed. @@HernanSpeed Same block, different displacement, heads, intake, exhaust, valvetrain, engine controls, etc. Lincoln engine was designed in Ohio. And you know dang well Lincoln NEVER used Nikasil cylinder liners. My mechanics were independent Jaguar mechanics, and yes, they got in over their heads. Cross referencing my problems with TSBs were how the mechanics finally would figuer out the ongoing problems. I'm just saying no way is this car a daily driver with the sensitive fault codes always triggering and so many expensive regular failures. EVERY JAG 8 CYLINDER BEFORE 2003 SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED. We had an excellent group on a forum 20 years ago sharing all the good and bad, and getting together as well. We were learning from each other about all the XK8 and XKR engines quietly any mysteriously being replaced by the dealers at no charge and with no explaination, which we concluded was to avoid a widespread engine recall. Unfortunately mine died after the warranty, regardless I took every precaution including replacing the tensioners. Prior I had a 1993 XJ6 VDP, wow, better than a modern Civic as a daily driver. After 8 years I sold that with 258k miles with virtually NO ISSUES ever, it still looked new. Jag 6 cylinder was bulletproof through it's entire life, from racing to luxury to sport driving. Sounds like you’ve got great taste in cars man! 🙌 Yes, the front bushing also acts as a foam spacer…so most of the ride height is restored if the front springs/shocks aren’t tired. Most clunks or clicks coming from the front suspension are the shock tower mounts. The shocks also affect ride height, but it’s more noticeable on 928’s actually. Lift an early 928 with Bilstein shocks, and it will take it at least 20 miles to settle back down to normal height (1”-2”+). It’s all the shocks. Most 928’s have adjustable shock collars to fix the ride height, but it’s tricky because the ride takes a while to settle down. Rey Rob thanks for watching! 🔥🙌

What are your thoughts on a 2000 Mercedes SL500 vs. a 2002 XK8?
@HernanSpeed

To be honest Mike, I like both. The SL500 is the last Mercedes that’s Built like a bank vault, not like the newer ones. The Jag feels more special though, especially the interior. Bottom line: Benz as a daily, and Jag to go on dates with the wifey. Mike thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

Your claim that “99.9% of the interior is vinyl” is patently untrue. It is 99.9% real leather, in fact it is a famous English brand, Connolly leather, and what appears to be wood paneling is, shocker - real wood.
@HernanSpeed
@HernanSpeed Жыл бұрын
Yesss, I used to think the same thing about the leather. Then I pulled the entire interior out to do some light restoration, and most of it is vinyl…not a bad thing btw. The newer Jaguar XK (150) had real leather dashboards, and most of those warp with time.. I love the wood, yesss it’s the REAL DEAL. I didn’t cover the wood paneling in this video, I might have to do another more in depth one for that…makes the interior truly special. QualicumBeachWalker thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

My seats in my XKR are leather. I realize that much of the door trim etc is vinyl. The vid creator admits the dash is real wood in his answer below. I'm not convinced at all about the interior being vinyl. Jaguars are renown for always having leather interiors and I don't believe a car such as this would have anything less. I've been to the factory in Scotland where they produce the leather for the seat for Jaguar, such as that in my XF. I've been looking at these for a while with a view to buying one and I've never seen one advertised anywhere that didn't have leather. A friend of mine used to have a 1999 XK8 and he's convinced it was all leather. Maybe the one in the video has been restored at some point using vinyl, or maybe they used vinyl for the US market because of the hotter climate, but not here in the UK, unless maybe on some basic models in the rear. The dash is definitely real wood panelling.

the car and driver review of the car in 2001 says it all I have a 2001 Jaguar xkr convertible. here it is Forget, for a moment, the 370-horsepower, 4.0-liter supercharged V-8 under its hood. Put aside thoughts of its Computer Active Technology Suspension or how quiet it is at cruise or whether the warranty stretches beyond the term of the second mortgage it'll take to buy it. Instead, just look at Jaguar's XKR. It's sex on wheels! A lot sexier than the naturally aspirated XK8 upon which it's based and not sexy in a vulgar, lecherous, strip-club-near-the-airport sort of way, either. But Elizabeth Hurley-wearing- Versace-at-the-Oscars sexy: provocative, confident, not at all trashy, with an upper-class British accent. Still, all that sex appeal is just luscious icing on a fast, well-mannered, well-built cake. The XKR is the most desirable Jag two-door sold here in at least 25 years. And $79,465 for the coupe (or $84,715 for the convertible), although hardly cheap, represents some real value in comparison with other high-end performance cars such as the eerily similar Aston Martin DB7.

I don't believe that claim. I changed to my own xk8 upper shock mount and when I compared the old parts with the new one, they were the same height and there was nothing wrong with them. The parts are original and have been driven 140,000 miles.
@HernanSpeed
@HernanSpeed Жыл бұрын
I’ve changed the front bushing mounts 9 times. They look worn after only 7k miles, you can even see them deteriorating from the top of the shock mounts…foam particles everywhere. You also can’t compare the struts that are uncompressed. I’d say the issue is even worse with the 20” wheels, like the Detroit’s. As there is no side wall to absorbing bumps. The early 17”s can get a few more miles, but not double. The good thing is that this mount has become cheaper, you couldn’t find it under $240 per side 10 years ago. The prices have definitely come down. Aki Vaaljoki thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

Jason, the AC is ice cold…it’s like any modern Ford. Most importantly, the AC’s cool down time is really fast 💨 Seconds in the Miami heat. As far as comparing it to the Porsche 928, there really isn’t. The 928 is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, but you really have to hunt to find a nice one. The XK8/XKR is similar in that they can fill the same roll, but it’s a more worry free car. You can leave it parked outside, drive through a car wash, and little maintenance…just gas. There’s also incredible deals out there!! Go drive a nice XKR and give it a nice stomp on the gas, you’ll LOVE IT! 🔥🔥💯💯

As a Canadian, I shouldn't defend American pronunciation... however... we generally pronounce it the American way. It is feasible. If you speak 'guar' as a single syllable then it comes out as 'gwar'... not to be confused with that weird costume rock band. I like the idea of pronouncing things the proper way. Unfortunately, saying 'jag-u-ar' in North America makes one sound pretentious. Same as putting the 'i' back into aluminium. What I don't get is the significant amount of Americans on videos etc who pronounce it 'jag- wire'. That one makes no sense to me.
