Apart from rust, I think now is a good time to buy one. Relatively cheap, classic car insurance, you would also expect any of the normal major common faults/repairs/issues would have been sorted given their age. Check the service history and buy one and have some fun! :-)

I paid 15k for an 03 XK8 and 8 years later sold it for 11k. It never gave a moment’s trouble and its beauty was a thing to behold. I asked a car valeter about claying it. He said it didn’t need it. The paintwork was impeccable. I now have an F Type

I own the same XKR for 23 years now and it never gets old to drive it or to look at. I still find it gorgeous. It is not a super-sporter, but a wonderful grand tourer. Especially now in Switzerland, were there were never many and now you don't see them anymore on the roads, it still turns heads.

Hi John! Sorry, I couldn't make it to the premiere... 🙁 I totally agree with all your points! Don't buy an XK8 if you want a hardcore sportscar, if you want to impress your neighbours, if you expect perfection - but if you want a wonderful grand tourer for two, if you love the reactions of "those who know" and if you rate character over perfection, the XK8 could be your car! To me it's the carlove of my life and I simply cannot express the emotions, this car gives me! As an >50 I experience the excitement of a child everytime I see it, enter it, drive it, clean it, talk about it... 🤩

It's been educational owning my 1997 XK8. One of the main things I had to learn on my own was keeping that throttle body clean as well as replacing or washing out the airfilter more often than usual. And even though it feels like nickel and diming at times, I wouldn't trade it for anything less.

Absolutely brilliant review and advice, thank you. Back in 2004 I had rented a very pretty gold-coloured 6-cyl convertible at LAX airport for a few fun days, for only $65 (!) per day, but I was slightly disappointed that it wasn’t at all fast, it wallowed and leaned heavily around corners like a boat, and the convertible boot was not flush down with the back of the car, though it sure did turn heads driving along Sunset Blvd!

Just discovered your channel...what a beautiful car! I have a XK 150 convert...the 5.0L n.a. and I just love it. These Jag 100s and 150s are just so beautiful. Rear seats are problematic for humans....but... are great as accessible boot space! I find them incredibly useful. Funnily, my more practical car is a turbo Civic...a fantastic car in it's class. The Civic is supposed to be my daily....but...well...you know. Thank for the video, your enthusiasm is infectious.

I clicked this video because the title riled me, having watched the video iam calmed , the maker is obviously a'jagman' and all the reasons he gives are sensible , as a man who has been fortunate to have owned two in my past and had the most wonderful 'road trip ' with just me an my youngest son around Ireland in a beautiful racing green example , iam pleased to announce my son is also a Jag fan . Perfectly explained John! I'm one year into ownership of my 98 XK8 Convertible and I'm loving it! I learnt most of my fettling on old British sports cars and this is a bit of a step up, but a scanner and channels like yours have helped me immensely. I was a little apprehensive about doing my own repairs on a relatively complex car but with this sort of help, they really aren't that scary.

I've owned an XKR 4.2 for 11 years. I agree with all your comments, especially regarding finding an independent who can work on the car for the more complicated jobs. Thanks to your video I fitted a wind deflector last summer. What a difference! I love the XKR. Its looks, its power and it's sound, especially with the cat back exhaust system I have with quad pipes. 👍

Hi John, I think you're spot on with your assessment. I've had my XKR for 18 months now. I've already spent a load of necessary and un-necessary money on it but I absolutely love it. Luckily I'm an ex-mechanic (a long time ago) so I know my way round a tool kit. There's a lot that still frightens me on this car; In particular the electrics, but I'm happy to have a go at anything. Tidying up the bodywork is my next project. Wish me luck 🙂

I sold mine because of those electrics. The ones in the engine bay had gone brittle & if you moved them too much they would crack. I decided it was too old & time to let it go. Funny thing was the guy that bought it threw all the running gear out & put a 2000hp twin turbo LS motor in it. So it did not worry him.

I then traded it at a very good local independent jag dealer for an XKR supercharged model some years ago and as you so rightly say it is a beautiful car that l absolutely love and people stop to watch go by with a big smile on their faces.

Agree 100% had my Xkr convertible 10 years now, kept it off the road in winter which I think has helped. Had it fully resprayed during lockdown. Had the Aston itch too but wouldn’t even look at a db7. The jag is better in every single way. Got a DB9 last July, love them both. Get the same level of comments for both cars!

I agree the DB9 is sufficiently destinct from the Jag products to warrant the extra price. And its much better than the DB7 (particularly the interior). Interestingly i think i have just now decided X100 v DB7. Both beautiful but an easy win for the X100 in every other regard X150 v DB9. Both great choices but DB9 wins the beauty contest, and its tight in every other regard. Controversial?🤔

@@ToTheGarage nope not controversial, my mum has an x150 4.2 and it’s a great car. I test drove a couple 5.0 Xkr cars and whilst they were very quick I didn’t think they were as composed as the DB9.

@@lukeshardlow768 honestly sometimes I see the X150 and question if I've made a mistake; I just thought it was a slightly more advanced X100 but the more I learn the more I realise the X150 has less in common with the X100 than the X100 had with the XJS. The X150 is a much superior car in many ways, construction methods, engine/power, transmission, aerodynamics, brakes etc. All the sensible reasons. Still I got the X100 specifically because it is so pretty, and the interior design is so timeless. The X150 just feels like any other modern car inside. The X100 is kinda timeless. I get compliments everywhere I go with the X100 and it just gives everyone a warm and fuzzy feeling. "Pretty car... paid for?"

Absolutely agree with you, I own 2001 Vanden Plas, I use it ONLY for pleasure driving, I keep it in a top condition always, it does cost me probably $300-$1300 a year for minor repairs and upkeep but I’m driving 100-300 miles on a weekend with confidence, and so far, (knock-knock-knock on a wood) never let me down, constantly getting admiration looks, constantly been asked if I would sell it , I think this is the best PLEASURE car in the world.

I've v driven xj8's for about 10 years. love those cars. Now I am doing engine work on a 97 xk8. Parts for the timing chain were easy to get and relatively inexpensive. Bugger to get the bottom pully off. I can't wait to get it on the road. I am expecting better performance than the xj8 just because of the weight. Engines are the same. Can't beat the style, however an older Chrysler Sebring convertible looks like the xk8's baby brother.

John, great video as always, and you are right these cars are around 25 years old and need some tinkering, but I absolutely love my XK8 convertible, 26 years old now. I don’t have to drive it, just peek in the garage and it’s there waiting to growl ! but when you drive it’s smooth and quick, I have been lucky to have owned or worked on most cars, from Minis to Rolls Royce, this is a car I spent years looking for and definitely not disappointed, a pleasure to be in, and the attention it now attracts like, it’s a beautiful car, don’t make cars like that anymore, what is it, is it nice to drive, bet it’s expensive ? so John you’re 6 reasons why not to, but, 100 great reasons why to buy one ! Regarding the brakes, there should be a big improvement starting from model year 2000 as Jaguar doubled the pressure per mm of the brake pedal.

Hi John. Think you've covered everything about the XK8 ownership pit falls . Complex car it is so you do need to keep on top of it . Mine is an Oct 96 car adaptive susp same colour as yours .but if you get a good one and keep on top it .the rewards from the jaaag xk8 are in my opinion outstanding . Just love the car . Rick

Thanks, I had a 1 year old XK8, that was literally given to me because the owner did not like it, yes he was rich. I rarely used it, I also had a Range Rover which I preferred to drive. I kept it for a year but the costs were very high even on a very new model, so I sold it. Regarding tinkering and mech skills, I was very good, but eventually maintaining my V8 MGB roadster, which I built from a shell, became too much. Thanks, all good advice

I've owned a '99 XK8 coupe for two years now, and spent around 4K euro's on it to get it back into shape. I've bought the car for 8,5K. Totally worth it, I make sure to always have a bit of a nest egg for the car, and do some small tinkering myself.

Bravo John! The title threw me off at first but I think this may be your best XK8 video. Agree with all your points. My kids and I do though consider it a 3 seater, albeit like you said cross wise. These cars are a commitment, knew that going in but happy to say my 1998 Convertible, "Wanda", has been good to my pocketbook. That said owning an X100 is a commitment. A commitment of love and acceptance, for better or worse. These are beautiful, amazing cars, but they will test you. If you aren't ready for a commitment to your car that rivals a marriage, don't buy one! Great job John! Thanks for another great XK8 video!

I agree with 5 out of 6 points. I' in my second year owning a 4.2 XKR and I love it. Unfortunately, I'm severely mechanically challenged. I'm willing to get my hands dirty but lack John's skills. I don't have any Jag dealers closer than 90 mins away... and I don't even know if they are willing/capable of fixing a 2003 XKR. I am in a Brit car club and they have provided advice on possible mechanics etc. Thus far I have swapped out an old battery (all by myself, thank you very much) and replaced the tires (I figured 15 yrs was old enough. Didn't do that myself, though). So, no 'expert' help needed ... yet... Despite this complete lack of talent, I wouldn't advise against buying an X 100 Jag. They gorgeous, fun and unique. I hope to will it to my son when I die.

I have an 04 XKR with the Cat suspension and I have already done the bushings and mounts for the strut in the front and will be going through the rear end shortly. I have the 6 piston Brembos and they do a more than adequate job of applying the whoa. My driver's side is your passenger side so keep us colonials across the pond in mind when you mention locations of things on occasion. I have the supercharged 4.2 and it does pull it around nicely and I do know what you mean about the ride fooling you as the car tracks very smoothly and well to the point where you don't feel the twitchiness and sensation of speed. I have kept my exhaust fairly stock so it is silent rather than throaty but I am looking for a mechanic in the area that knows how to get more juice out of this peach and possibly remove the electronic top speed limiter because I want to give the tires a work out on the track. The dealer I bought it from said the battery was new but when I put it away for the New England winter weather when I went to start it after a couple of weeks there wasn't enough charge to start the car so I put a trickle charge on it and it started. A couple of weeks later the same thing so the battery is an issue and probably isn't new as he said it was and this could also explain phantom codes that have popped up that I never considered the battery as a possible cause because he had said it was new. I will be looking on Amazon for that dual USB and LED gauge you mentioned in your battery replacement video

Great Intel Gary. I dont know if its true because i have not, and wont be, testing it. But I have been told that if you move Shifter from D to 5 (assuming you have a 6 speed?) and then back to D with sport button turned on and while exceeding 100 Mph, then the speed limiter will be disabled until the car dips back below 100. I have not seen this written down anywhere, so its pure hear say. I also believe that the unlimited speed of an XKR coupe in good condition is 173mph.I can not remember where I heard that from either. Interesting things to think about though👍👍

Own mine over 20 years just did my coil packs and plugs at 93,000 miles because of check engine light came on ... Now on to finding a reliable mechanic in my area to do the timing chain maintenance... Love my car 🚗

I keep a spreadsheet of all my spend on my 2004 XKR which I’ve owned for going on seven years. I record everything connected with the maintenance of the car, from a full respray to a light bulb. The total is eye watering. I am lucky to be able to afford to do it and wouldn’t part with it. But buy wisely if you want one.

I completely agree with your points. So much so, I have two. I just love them. Here in Spain you will pay around €12000 to €14,000 for a car in reasonable condition. I am lucky as there is a great independent dealer near me, and I am quite handy. However, the costs can quickly escalate. No matter, I still love them! My wife says that I am a glutton for punishment. She may be right.

I'm trying to find why my intercooler pump doesn't have power running to it at the moment. The fuse is fine after replacing it and it did work breifly but then it decided to stop again. No power to connector. I have had mine for 3 years now, I will need to get some rust work done on it at some point. It's pretty good otherwise though but recently I have been thinking about upgrading to the X150 shape cars, I don't like them as much but I think they will be more reliable and they won't rust anywhere near as much as my car has, is or will. Road tax is a lot more expensive though but double the road tax with hopefully less trouble in ownership may be worth trading. I do want one with wood paneling inside though and preferably a green exterior. We will see though, I still like my X100.

I have had the pleasure or owning and more importantly driving my 06 XKR for the past 4 years. It was one of a few built for the years introduction of the model with a few extra goodies. Truly a remarkable 10:49 driving experience having travelled from New Mexico to Alaska and across to Toronto. Sure there are costs to run beyond an economy car. Such is life. I cost more now as well. I m worth I it, in my biased opinion. Happy motoring.

As you say a very rewarding car to drive. I do or have done before I managed to join the ranks of cancer victims, managed all my own repairs. 1960 s 3.4 mks one and two, including overdrive, gearbox and engine overhauls. Am learning, now a bit about electrical management systems on my xkr 4.2 s. Victory 2005. Mechanically very good but a shame that rust has needed treatment. Hopefully ant rust treatment will put a stop to more of that. I have a question John. I have a friend who has just bought a very nice xk 150. He wants to get himself a whole car jack so he can put the whole car up in the air a bit. I have seen your scissor type system and would be interested to know the make and any comments you would send my way please. Hi Geoff. I have a 'strongman' Clifton mobile scissor lift Its major PROs over a lot of other options are It will work on standard domestic 240V supply with the addition of a 16 amp breaker suitable for the job. It required no air supply for the safety devices It requires no special floor prep beyond hard and flat concrete It can be moved around on integral deployable castors if you want to move its position later. I would not be without it, even if its just for the luxury of cleaning wheels sills and arches at a convenient height. I did a series of videos about it. Here is a link to one of them. Recently I had the unique pleasure of replacing the mechanism for one of the rear windows. When I put everything back together, I decided to remove the rear seatbelts. I don't know if you can do that in the UK with MOT and all, but it sure does make the back seat look "cleaner". Buy the way, what have you done to the exhaust to make it sound so nice?

Great video as always. Quick question as new owner of a 2005 xk8 convertible. Is it OK to drive on freeway with roof down and no tonneau cover? It looks like it flaps a lot so want to make sure I don't damage the roof! Question two. How long is it supposed to take for roof to go up and down. Yes you can drive with no tonneau. The lining flaps but it’s fine. The Tonneau keeps it neater looking, and was intended to either stop the headlining getting dirty. Or stop the sun from bleaching half of it ( dependent on where in the world you live) The roof is quite slow. Not timed it but 20 seconds plus for sure. If yours is closer to a minute then check the little brass tap on the side of the pump is properly closed. Or consider replacing the fluid as it can thicken, particularly in hot climates.

My XK8 that has graced my driveway for the last 5 years is the most beautiful sheet metal that has ever graced the universe. However, it graces the driveway not the roads because just after buying it, the heater core blew a pipe, and to replace it means pulling the dashboard or the engine….. and it’s just not in my budget or abilities. Ohh, and to put it as a Jaguar mechanic put it, it’s like an old British motorbike or a Harley, “take it more than a hundred miles from home and your bringing it back on a trailer.”, so now it’s the prettiest “yard ornament in Florida”.. one of these days it well get a Tesla running gear, between now and then it makes the view from mMy front door amazing.

I've owned my xkr 100 for about 3 years now, buying it at 55k miles from an owner that had really taken care of it I thought I was in for an easy ride, boy was I wrong! After a steering pump replacement, engine mountings, full rust treatment and repairs, repairing of the interior vents (that I did myself) courtesy of "tothegarge's" insanely instructional and educational videos, a new set of tyres and a body respray (amongst many other little things) I think I'm just about there. But the Aston bug has got me fidgeting in my seat, and I think I'm gonna take the plunge, but it won't be the DB7 or the DB9 (though I think it's one of the most beautiful cars on planet earth) I'm thinking about a vantage. Test drove a 4.7 the other day and my oh my. To Sum up I've had a handful of jags now, and quite a number of different cars over the years but the xkr 100 has a special place in my heart, if I could keep it and get my next buzz I would, but alas I can't. Truly stunning vehicle inside and out. I think its gonna be a lot earlier that 15 years before they start to skyrocket, anyways enough of my ranting, cheers all :)

Funny, I really do like these Jags, but I do in fact own a 2008 Honda Civic and it's never missed a beat, well ironically, the CD player has broken so no beats coming from there but apart from that it's solid as a rock for now. Your reasons are good, they're all the reason I haven't bought one, I'm not a wealthy chap and I worry that buying one would bankrupt me very quickly. The annual tax costs alone make my eye's water.

I own my XK8 from 2001 for nearly two years and I love her every time. Her name is Eloise, she‘s the perfect car for me. She is not an easy car and her electronics are the weakest point, but mostly it‘s just a battery problem. So all you guys with electronic problems,firstly check your voltage, she shows no mercy to a low performing battery!

😁 Its the extreme pearl effect in the paint 'Aquamarine Mica' and the reason that it was only offered for a couple of years. Whenever two pannels meet at different angles, are capable of appearing in different colours let alone shades. (Various Blues, Various Greens, and all of the peacocks shades inbetween) In different light or an hour later the car looks different. In fairness, the top of the nosecone can look different to the bonnet on a lot X100's in many colours as the paint on plastic often ages differently to the paint on Steel.

Any car like this needs a healthy maintenance budget to be set aside for the inevitable bills, minimum £1000 per year and thats just repair type work, PLUS money for servicing, tyres etc.... I am very interested in getting one for occasional euro road trips and weekend use😮

I'm 6'1" and I fit in the back just fine. As long as the passenger or driver in front of me doesn't mind me having my ankles over their shoulders. As long as we are all good friends. My friend's wife fits in the back, but she's Japanese. I also fit in the boot and that is significantly more comfortable. I would say, that if there was a significantly less chunky seat in the front, with space under it, it would be a somewhat different story, but still. Anyway, my pomeranians fit in the back seat just fine, and we don't have kids and aren't planning to have any. More money for car parts.

I've done lots of Europe tours in mine over the last 11 years. Always get a service before you go on a long tour, like a week, otherwise just be sensible before you go. Check oil, coolant, tyre pressure and tyre condition and if it's been a while since you used it, go for a decent drive before you head off on tour. Mine has never let me down. Enjoy!

Hello Jason, l have been abroad with my XK8 like Colin Spark (who as far as I know is no relation) and find them excellent tourers. With the XKCC Club we have been to Spain, France and Italy and only on one occasion had to have my car transported back to UK. The local Jaguar dealer could have easily repaired the leaking gearbox oil leak but didn’t !!! Like Colin says, service them beforehand and enjoy the trip.

Handling superb Ride soft compared to most 'Sporty motors' Remember its a GT rather than a bare bones sports car. Steering very light but variable rate. If you pull the right fuse out it becomes permanently lower assistance which some people prefer. Jags are pretty unique in terms of sporting ability. They hide their speed from the driver. Which may not be what you want. On the other hand their grip and Go is epic. I genuinely think you have to drive an XK8/R or XJ8/R because the stats will convince you they have BMW or Merc equivalences, but they are not like either to experience from the drivers seat. In comparison i think a BMW feels sharper but Harsher and is a great tool. A merc is USUALLY more insular/refined? but less engaging The Jag is all Soul, passion, and Fist in a velvet glove.

Hello Sir, I am planning to buy an X100 (XKR) since this car Is to me probably one of the, if not the sexiest coup' ever build. But although your advices are very useful to buy one with a clear conscience, what are the specific détails and things to review before buying one. Every car has its chronic defaults and known illnesses that you need to know about to check whether they have occurred or have been cured. What are they for this model?

Ive covered them in many of my videos, but a quick summary summary list is It should start first time with no more than 1 second of cranking If the top of the engine rattles like slack chains particularly when you first start it from cold, then walk away. if its a 4.0 litre car ask for proof that the timing chain tensioners have been upgraded to the 3rd generation (metal bodied) or negotiate the cost of upgrading them yourself (£1000-£1500) Check for rust at the rear end of the sills. and above the rear bumper all the way around Holes in floor by drivers heels (wet carpets) Rust behind the vertical part of the front subframe. Headlamps that are full of condensation or have lost their silvering. Check the gearbox works well and is smooth in all positions and that sport mode makes a difference. The front suspension should not be lower than the rear (strut mounts collapsed) If it has active dampers (wires going to the top of the struts) They are expensive and when they fail the ride gets very harsh. Its a Jag so if the ride is not wonderfu,l then suspect dampers and or bushes are shot. Put a code reader on it before you buy it. and make sure that if its electrical it all works. 4.2 cars have no issues with timing chains If its a late car with plastic sill covers, check for rot behind them. They are fundamentally reliable cars but they are also getting old. And some have not been looked after the way they deserve.

Hi I would remove the air intake duct (The snorkel) and carefully check it for holes around the bellows area. The underside particularly can rub through or even melt in exceptional circumstances. Then check the smaller breather hose that goes from the snorkel to the cam cover. These are often broken, leaking or blocked Finally where this pipe goes into the cam cover, can be blocked. Any of these situations is capable of reducing power and changing the emissions. I hope that helps👍

I have been lucky enough to drive a 2005 XKR for 87,000 miles of absolute pleasure. Last year I spent 18,000 dollars on it, 7,000 of it a show paint joball new CATS and coils,refinished the wheels, all new hose and the hoses for the power top, new Brembo pads and discs, new Continental GT's, new seat upholtery for the Recaros, serviced the ZF6, timed the windows, did plugs and coils, new xenon light conversions and most comforting of all, a new flip up drink holder that closes. Why would I do that? Driving that car is the most fun I have ever had with my clothes on.

My father passed and left me his '07 XK conv with 38k miles. Unfortunately, even though it has only 38k miles. It has so many issues that I'm afraid to drive it. Took it to the Jaguar dealership and the cost to repair was enormous for even basic stuff. $800 just to tell me why the AC/Heat won't turn on. I think I know what the AC issue is with the fan. But it gets finicky when it wants to start and not start. The key won't get out of the center console. The electric brake doesn't work. Tires are dry rotted, but the tires aren't that expensive...not as much as I would have expected.. When driving it hiccups, rpm gauge needle/engine jumps 500rpm, especially up hills. The list is long. Disappointing because it's a beautiful car. Heated seats don't work. Main thing is that hiccup while driving, if I knew what that was then I might consider keeping it, but I've seen enough Jaguar dealership repair bills and they are liking buying an inexpensive used car each time. And nobody wants to touch a Jaguar at local shops, finding someone who wants to work on one in the USA is very rare. Love the car, but everything in me is saying money pit. Other issues with it but the main one is the weird engine surges. If anybody has a clue what the surges could be, that'd be appreciated.

Sorry to hear of your fathers passing. Ref the surges. I would first clean the MAF sensor and then suspect the coil packs. If you have a friend with an OBDII Scanner, it may tell you the fault immediately and for free. But at the end of the day I’m sure you dad would not want you to be financially burdened. So unless it’s a car that you personally would have bought and got excited about, then I would sell it on to another enthusiast, and spend the cash on something you really want and can then say ‘thanks dad’ every time you enjoy it.❤

I’d like to keep it, but I also don’t want to spend more than half of what it is worth seems like if it were mechanically sound it’d be worth around $10k or so. Jaguar dealership said in 2020 to let it go for $3k after they looked at it. Seemed low at the time, values obvious went up during 2022. I have a Scanguage, next door neighbor has a xk8. I love the car, it just scares me after dealing with the Knoxville, TN dealerships. Plus I’ve seen some of his repairs there, some upwards of $6k. Ouch. He had something to do with I think coils done about 6 months before he passed. I’ll have to find that repair bill. I think that was $1500 or so by a non-dealership, I went there and they said the new owner won’t take jaguars. When I vacationed in Great Barrington, MA area there was a lot of Jaguars in that area, one really high end restoration. It’s been 3 years since he’s passed. 2023 is time for me to figure out what I’m doing with this car.

Mine hiccupped like that and it turned out to be a hole in the underside of the plastic duct going into the thrittle body on the 4.2 V8. The Mass Airflow Sensor, or MAF, is screwed with by a hole on its suction side duct. Its mounting clamp got loose and the hole was worn by rubbing against a metal part. Jaguar paid for new valves and the rest of the repair- 9,000 dollars, at 66,000 miles.
