I am in my 70's. I was riding a Specialized Stump Jumper 29er. Was getting to a point where I could not ride it anymore. Just too difficult on the up hills and rocks. Then someone did me a favor and stole it. My insurance paid me replacement value. So I went out and bought a Motobecane 29er e bike. I love riding it. It has given me the confidence that I had been losing. Once again I can attack the rocks and grades with the extra power from the bike. I keep up with my sons. Riding is fun again.

@@michael_177 Hey Mike. E bikes are real game changers. Especially for seniors (like me) or the "casual" rider (not a jock or hardcore). When you get to the top of a grade you aren't totally wiped out. If I get tired I get weaker and can't deal with obstacles as well. Fear of a crash increases. At that point I am tired and worried. The fun is gone. The e bike does the really hard work so I have energy to meet the next feature or obstacle. My Motobecane has a 450 watt motor--not big but sufficient. You will love your e bike.

Overweight 62 yo rider and was riding less. Picked up a used 2017 turbo levo and riding more than ever. Even riding trails that were too difficult. Ride mostly in eco mode and ride 30 miles before I charge again.

I ride enduro normally and hired an ebike at Coed y brenin to see what it was all about. I had fun on the uphills and flats but hated the weight on the downhills. I also couldn’t look back on the day with the ‘pride’ I usually feel. Definitely not for me, until I get too old for the climbs that is.

@@timmayers4965 I came up on bmx...and have one hot rodded with a bbshd mid drive. I felt the same as you,and took one out and was hooked. Mine has a ton of power and really is a light mc. That said, off road I turn pedal assist down and the workout is the same,just wayyy faster. Found I had to ride new trails. Adding a suspension fork keeps me up damn near with 125cc. (Hard fork is a no no for ebike lol)

I got an e bike recently and is honestly the best thing I've bought. Getting out twice as much with twice the distance and twice the fun! Once you learn the bike and braking points it's bloody awesome!

For me, I have both. I have a Pivot Switchblade “regular bike” and a Yeti 160E electric bike. I’ll ride the “regular bike, but now that I’m in my 50s I need two or three recovery days. Now, with the e-bike I can ride on my recovery days. That means MORE DAYS OF RIDING!! I don’t allow myself more than 3 e-bike rides in a row so I still have to put in the work on many rides, and get that sense of accomplishment of tackling a mountain. Then go out and enjoy active recovery rides. You are right that it’s a completely different sport, but in a very complimentary way to riding “Acoustic.”

I took to mountain biking in 1990 after a motorcycle accident left me with a permanent disability and lack of power in my legs, I could have bought a road bike, but the gearing was too high for me and I cannot get out of the saddle to pedal. Following a few more accidents and age catching up with me, I decided to try an e-MTB, it was a game changer. This was 3 years ago and I was just getting into my stride, when I had a nasty fall outside my home, so less than a month of owning my new bike, I was given another devastating medical diagnosis, that has kept me off the bike until recently. I couldn't bend my right leg, due to nerve damage and ligaments that weren't in the correct place and my doctors could/would not help. A few days ago and by some strange twist of fate, I turned over in bed and heard a "click", a split second later the pain that went through my leg was excrutiating to say the least, but it was very short lived and my leg felt odd and somehow "freer" than it had been for a long time. I got out of bed and got dressed, then walked through the house, noticing that my leg was now how it used to be and no longer "tight". After breakfast I got to wondering if I could try and pedal the e-bike, I nervously wheeled the bike to the front of the hour and did my first tentative pedal strokes in 3 years, I was stoked to find I had no issues, my leg wasn't tight and even without the "assist" on, I could pedal freely and without any pain or restriction. The euphoria and joy I felt was enough to put tears in my eyes. Today, I will be going out on my bike for my first proper ride in a very long time and although it won't be very long or technical ride, I'm going to enjoy every second and at the age of 62, I feel like a young kid again. If you rode a bike years ago and want to do so again, try and an e-bike, you won't regret it and it will give you a new lease of life.

You can also convert pretty much any Bike to an E-bike with a Drop in Mid Drive, easy enough and much better than a Hub Drive if you Live in the UK and have to keep to a 250W motor, as you can use your low range gears for the hills without bogging down the motor Here's a good look at what the conversion process looks like (paste this into the correct place in the youtube address) watch?v=Embjdj5ezfc

Im 65 years old but honestly I still feel sharp as ever on the trails...............BUT I dont ride the most blood thirsty gnarly trails we have here in the park. I came off analog MTB’s, and tried my first e during the pandemic. First ride, I said nope. I rode again, and figured out the power settings. Ended up buying one last year. I run 98% eco with 25%-35% power. At 51 lbs, I dare anyone to try my bike and say it’s not a workout. But it is easier than an analog for sure. As for weight, I got used to it fairly quickly, as I also ride dirt bikes. I feel better on a solid footing, vs a wirey feel. Bottom line I’m liking it now, and I see a lot of older people riding now. I’m no longer a hater.

I love my emtb. I put some upgraded suspension on it this year and it just eats anything I can throw at it. Great for the nasty terrain without putting you in the red on the first hill like on a regular bike.

I have a 2020 Specialized Turbo Levo SL Comp Alloy and absolutely love it. It's amazing how light the bike compared for a full powered ebike and it feels similar to riding a stump jumper.

I love my e-bike, and have rediscovered mountain biking. I wish I had realized that excessive power & wattage are unnecessary all you need is a good quality 250-watt or so motor and your set!

For me an e-bike takes the sting out of hills and makes climbing fun into the bargain. I still get a lot of exercise despite the myth that you don’t do any work. Being less tired on downhills my skill levels have improved although, as you say, the e-bike feels more planted. I did Bike Park Wales recently on my Capra which was a very big change but in a good way being more nimble than my Trek Rail 9. Horses for courses so not selling the “acoustic”. Another bonus is that my partner will come out or rides that would have beaten her. She laughed the first time she used “Turbo” on her Cube Stereo having initially felt she was betraying her Lapierre Zesty. No such qualms now.

Just bought a trek rail 7 2021 and took her for a local ride on steep natural trails, I was initially concerned about it. First trail I tried riding the Same as my radon swoop, and soon found out this was not possible, as soon a I adjusted my riding style everything just clicked. I'd say by the end of the day the ebike inspired more confidence. I'm converted.

Best decision I ever made getting an emtb. So much fun and up hills no longer matter. Just have to keep your eye on battery levels when on longer rides. One thing I have noticed since riding e bikes though is Breaks. I have found you need your breaks working spot on all the time. Also going tubeless (in my opian) are a must. Have saved me a few times they have. Not sure if you mentioned in your video where was you riding....?

I bought a Cube 160 Action team back in October 2020. What to consider when riding in my experience. You do get drawn into Turbo mode to get up those hills, however consider using all your gears in Eco, tour, or MTB mode. Reason being I recently took my bike back to Tredz for a service to be told some bad news. Basically because of my over use of gears 6-12 in Turbo mode, my chain is worn, along with gears 6-12 and main sprocket. . With some additional bearing wear the estimate is £400. This is only after 1800 miles. The tech guy basically indicated that I would probably get another winters use out of the bike before the drivetrain will be shot. That will be roughly 18 months old with around 3000 miles use. It's a little like the advice I gave my son when he bought a fast car, I said speed costs money, tyres, petrol, insurance, clutch , brakes. Just though I'd give you guys the heads up, ride safe all.

1800 miles depending on conditions on a MTB isn't bad at all, I got less than 1k out of my chain/cassette on a normal MTB, but 400 quid seems very steep! tredz are part of Halfords though, take it to a 'proper' bike shop and get a quote if you can't do it yourself.

Just got my first E bike...Teslas with pedals basically. Not mountain bike, but trail able and all. One...you 2 really can handle your bikes, and two...adjusting to the weight is a bit intimidating I am finding, especially in a city setting...Vancouver , Canada, and here you 2 were in my home country..excellent....My road bike weighed 20 lbs, so I must be patient... You both boosted the reality that slogging up hills is all well and good..... if you are into it...but getting assisted on hills keeps the leg strength, and riding longer is what my goal is....I'm 69, so, not ever going to do what both of you showed us, truly super control and really proved how the E is going to be a serious contender in time.

I ride my roadbike between 100 and 150 miles a week, but in between those rides I ride my Canyon Spectral ON CF8 with a huge battery, 900 watt hour. As a long time dirtbike rider its a natural thing to get on an E Mt bike. I ride with people who dont ride a manual bike to stay in shape, and they will never keep up with a stronger rider even though both are on E bikes. Legs still matter, a lot. If you wanna go a good pace uphills. (You still have to know how to ride a mt bike, skill has to be there) In general the E bike is totally addicting, every ride more so.

Wow! You guys ride turbo a lot! And you should definitely turn down to off when descending, not only is it saving the battery but it can put power to you back wheel when you don't want it, like on lose corners etc.

Reward through effort is the only way for me. Love my e st 900 Rockrider. Try and keep the power settings on low. Greatest spec under £2,000.

Ebikes also help the older people that want to mountain bike ride when there body's are not up to riding a standard mountain bike. At 55 years old and a rotator cuff surgery and a major knee surgery under my belt I could never ride the terrain I like to ride unless I had an Ebike.

I got my ebike (NCM Moscow, awesome bike) June 16 2021, I literally just came back from a cols windy ride 10 minutes ago, Nov 22 2021. I am 3km shy of 2500km. That is easy 2000km more than I would have ridden. Many times, just like tonight, I will head out and ride under conditions I would not even think about on a regular bike. Windy, cold, basically miserable to go riding, and I will head out and plow 30-40km into the wind, cross wind, doesn't matter. I ride hard, just go faster. I rarely ride where my heart rate isn't up, especially hills, they seem more 'fun' in a sense, but I am huffing and puffing at the top, but climbing at 30km is a blast. I have geared up and plan to ride all winter when ever practical. For sure I will break 3000km. Should do over 5000 2022. Looking into a road trip, maybe to the coast, it is only 1100km. - Cheers

Ive come off my ebike twice unfortunaly it was when my bike insurance ran out and bike insurance for ebikes is quite expensive. what made me come of both times was because the peddles and hub were so close to the ground due to were the electric motor is that it hit these speed bumps amking me go head over heels over the handle bar. ive now got a permently damaged knee and am waiting for a replacement knee op. my cube reaction bike wasnt so reactive after all

I love my ebike and yes it's a different way to ride takes a whole new mindset. I love seeing the smiles on folks faces when they properly try an ebike for the first time. I think in five years time most folk will be on ebikes , it's already headed that way down south and in Europe. Oh! The last time I rode with you I did 40 km at GT and ended the day on 3% battery , I about fell off the bike in the carpark as my legs had turned to jelly. So you can get a good workout on an ebike.

I ride both bikes (regular and E-bike) depending on the trail etc. I have found I need to ride the same trail about 2X to get the same calorie burn on the E-Bike but it’s so much more fun doing it.

I bought a used E Mountain bike and have yet to take it off road it's a peddle assist .. January I am getting the battery rebuilt and upgraded to 52 volt it's a peddle assist so it should be great I just wanted to make sure I have the power and range to do what ever comes my way but other than that i really enjoy riding it .. Never saw myself as a person to ride a bike alot but fell in love with it the person I got it from did a lot of upgrades like brakes handle bars run flat tires I just need to buy a new seat that fits me better need it to be wider and have more cushion..

After you get used to an e-bike though, it doesn’t feel as “different” as a regular mountain bike. I rode regular mountain bikes for many years and e-bikes felt REALLY alien at first, but now it’s the regular mountain bike that feels alien. I have found that I prefer the way e bikes feel. Your riding style adapts to the weight and you eventually don’t notice it really at all. Now I notice the lack of grip in a regular mountain bike than I do the weight of an e bike.

Facts ! Exactly the same for me. I'm a regular gym goer as well, so any 'extra muscle' perceived to be required is no issue. In fact, I like the extra aggression required. Ebikes aren't so twitchy. Ebikes handle like DH bikes on steroids with an all day uplift thrown in as well. What's not to like !

There are two sure ways to make you decide to choose an e bike over a regular bike - Age and or injury . I stopped riding at around 69 ( 75} now because of spinal and shoulder injuries . Then i got on an e bike and it was like i was thirty again .

A very helpful comment for a fellow sufferer (me). My left shoulder has been replaced twice, and my lower spine fused twice. My legs still work but I have been reticent to get on my bikes due to fear of escalating my pain (can you believe I have spent hours upgrading my bikes and those of my family just for the pleasure of handling them…). Two extra points which might be useful - 1 - get a bike with at least 75 Nm of torque as this will decrease the amount of straining while pedaling . the important thing is to have some gentle movement without causing more damage. 2- try installing riser bars that fit on the ends of your handlebars. This will give you multiple riding positions . i ride for five minutes or so bent over and then switch to sitting up with my hands on the raised part of the bars . alternating positions will greatly increase your riding pleasure .

Old guy novice here...had a few of these now and cons are- although your heart rate is comparable you don't sweat (lose weight) as much and not nearly as flick-able. Climbs are something to look forward to tho.

From a personal point of view, I don't ride my ebike any different to my regular bikes, I just jump on them and go, I don't give it a second thought, and the only difference i notice is, it makes climbing a lot easier. But I suppose the extra weight should make handling better, making the bike more planted. But again it's not something I think about, the only time my attention switches to my bike is if I hear a strange noise or something doesn't feel right with the bike, otherwise I am just concentrating on riding.

I’ve been heavily considering an electric mountain bike or a Kuberg Ranger to replace my stolen Sur Ron as a commuter and of course trail bike. Benefits of the EBikes: legal almost anywhere, batteries are more affordable, the bikes are more affordable, virtually unlimited range but Bosch advertises 60 mile range at 15mph. Annnnnd no insurance. That’s huge for me. The Kuberg and Sur Ron were badass. They can go 50mph and are a blast to ride. But you can’t ride a lot of trails and the range is pretty bad if you go full speed. To get a 60 mile range, you gotta go about 20/30mph. With some good pedaling and a hard workout, you could easily cruise at 25mph and get about 35 mile range I’d imagine? As easy and fun as a dirt bike is, I am leaning towards an ebike.

you gotta try the SL versions.. they are almost the weight of a trail bike. More like a 15 year old trail bikes weight. but you lose half the assist and battery but I can't see that being that much of an issue really.

Hey guy's can you give me some advice please? I am actually interested in one these Vitus EMTBs I haven't been on a bike for a good 10 Yr but did DH back then. I want to try one these EMBTs but one thing I'm looking for about them I can't find and that is how exactly do they work? Does the crank need to be in motion all the time for the motor to work or can you let it ride like these other EBikes? I'm just not completely sure how they work if it's only peddle assist what ever that is as say no one really makes it clear exactly how they work! ✌ I have an Amego Elevate (E-bike) I been riding daily for about a year . . . (I don't own a car) The bike itself is super strong and the 500 W motor-battery setup are more than enough . . . But I really hate the controls . . everything seem counter intuitive My personal opinion ! ! ! The controls need to be quicker . . simplified . . And additional durability / reliability would make these bikes the weapon of choice for any rider ! ! !

Yes, my car broke down recently,gas is so high and maintenance on vehicles is just way to much,honestly I'm tired of my car breaking down and so sick of the bus😫, I bought a scooter 7 yrs ago, then I bought an electric bicycle 3 yrs and now I just ordered an upgraded electric bicycle which will be here on Tuesday ☺️, honestly I'm not interested in even buying another car if I can't afford to buy a brand new one. my electric bicycles work for me just fine for me.

E mountain bikes are great for those who no longer have the legs for hills. I am the wrong side of 70 and use mine for basically enjoying the country side I seldom go off road. The plus of the Mountain bike formulae is that you dont get punctures the brakes are stronger and the bike can cope with the awful pothole roads we now have just about everywhere. They would make an excellent commuter bike.

Less weight is definitely an advantage for normal mountain bikes as it's easier to really throw the bike around and take up hills. But, yeah, I guess when you've got grip and an electric motor assisting you, the weight doesn't really matter. Pretty interesting.

1:59 that guitar rhythm reminds me of La Grange by ZZ Top, which I don't mind. So your e bike is 4 kg heavier than my enduro bike. it's 18.14 kg. so quite heavy. It felt quite heavy to move around in the air, but I got used to it, but I think an e bike would make it even harder. But my bike feels fine to me now, as I got the balance points, took some days or weeks to get it, maybe it's harder with an e bike. Great ebikes now have a walk mode, that's a must. But hike a bike will be brutal. I don't have anything against E bikes, but won't get one yet at least.

Ebikes can be modified upto the fastest thing on the road, look up killa cycle. Bicycles are not safe over 30 km/hrs. Ebikes are a lot of fun, the drawback is the extra wieght, which increases your momentum, which is a bit dangerous if you need to stop.

I love running, bike, hiking, skiing… hell i do a lot of different sports, modes of transportation: car, motorcycle, snowmobile, bicycle, boat, scooter… this is just another form of transportation and pleasure. I’m taking it to the extreme by using it as a long rang transportation but it’s doable and it’s practically free to travel with. It’s definitely not for everyone.

Most of my MTB life was on a normal bike. The idea that you don’t or can’t get as hard a workout on an EBIKE is made by people that have not ridden one. First, you can dial in the power for whatever workout level you want and fir real shits and giggles turn it off all together. Two, you can peddle as hard fir as long as you want in any power mode and quickly be at maxed out heart rate, if that’s what yer looking for. You are just going to be going faster. Which is the real shift- going thru the woods so much faster, it’s a different sport . Lastly, working power modes can keep your target heart rate much more stable, at whatever rate you choose, which any sports physiologist will tell you, is the best for fitness. I will never go back to regular MTB.
