Lemons and limes can also be frozen whole! The rind gets soft when they thaw but the amount of juice it yields is 👍. Don’t let them shrivel up in your produce drawer and then go in the garbage.

Freezing is a great way to avoid food spoilage when you are the only human in the house or just the only one who eats certain things. Lets you have plenty of variety. Can make up a batch of something and just freeze portions in bags or Pyrex bowls with tight lids. The 1-cup and 2-cup sizes are handy for freezing single portions and you can add more veg to it when reheating in a microwave. Casseroles, rice, millet, anything you have to cook. Slider bags of various sizes can be handy to keep portion bags together. Soup freezes fine, so I do that for the other half of the can. A friend used to make her own soup and boil it down to half volume, then pack it up in individual containers for freezing. She would take them to work and just add hot water at lunch time. I just sectioned four oranges and am freezing the segments flat in zip bags. Can eat them straight from the freezer or toss into blended concoctions. Do the same with melons, kiwi fruit, any citrus, sliced strawberries, anything that would fuse together if just tossed into a bag. Blueberries and grapes and cherries can just be frozen in bags. (If you don’t remove pits from the cherries, just be careful eating them and remember they have pits if you get the urge to use in a blended drink... ) Pineapple rings or chunks, even from a can, are great frozen. I’ll drink the pineapple juice myself (somebody has to make the sacrifice) and then pack them up in small containers like half-cup Rubbermaid ones with tight lids. They thaw quickly enough to eat like sherbet. I also will do this with nondairy ice cream (allergic to dairy) so I can’t tell myself I have to eat it all up before it “spoils”. Whole small baked potatoes freeze fine, bigger ones just get cut up into 3 or 4 pieces after baking. Likewise for sweet potatoes. I’ll buy extra bell peppers and freeze small strips in individual portion bags for cooked meals. Zucchini and summer squash etc. can be sliced or cut up into smaller pieces first. Even celery can be diced and frozen if you want to cook with it. I often use folded top or zip sandwich or snack bags to portion out commercial frozen veg or fruit before they fuse together and need an ice pick.... Then I can just grab one or two for my own meal. I’ve also frozen canned mixtures and beans and baked beans and chili. Snack zip bags are handy for dealing with these, just open the can and spoon it into bags in the amounts you for individual portions. Avocados can be frozen! You can freeze halves tightly wrapped but also can just mash with lemon juice and freeze in plastic bags which you can thaw as needed in the fridge. As the only eater, I like to freeze the mash flat in zip bags for easy storage and very quick thawing, no need to do it in the fridge. About half a Haas avocado fits nicely into a zip sandwich or snack bag. I’ve also bought frozen diced avocado in small cubes, which are nice because no surprises when you open an avocado. But before they fuse together, I bag portions of about 2 oz each and then can grab those and eat any time. They quickly thaw at room temperature if I want to spread them on anything. Even cream cheese or dips or spreads can be frozen in appropriate portions. If it is something like a sauce that doesn’t seem to actually freeze but stays liquidy, just use small freezer containers sold for homemade baby food. Cheese can also be frozen in 1oz cubes. This works for both dairy and nondairy. Shredded cheese can be portioned out first before freezing if you don’t use much at once. I’ve even frozen slices of cheese and vegan deli slices, I’m sure you can do it with the animal products as well. Just put something in between slices so you can easily separate them individually. Some cheese slices tend to crumble a bit on thawing, but that doesn’t matter to me. Also butter (dairy or vegan) can be frozen in blocks or as portions. I don’t have trouble slicing off a bit of a stick from the freezer do you don’t have to wait for the stick to thaw.

You offer good tips, Jillie, & I’ve gotten ideas from your website. A few years ago I read that potato chips could be frozen & thought was just couldn’t be right. I envisioned floppy, soft, icky chips. I had a big bag-unopened-left from a party & tossed them into the freezer. Totally forgot about them-until over a year later! So imagine my shock when they were really good!

I don't know if this is the best way, but when I have cilantro I just put it in a bag and roll it up and put it in the freezer. When I need some I just reach in and pinch off a couple tablespoons more or less. I also freeze Ginger the same way and take it out, grate off what I need and put it back. I roll both of them in plastic bags so they they have several layers protecting them.

I wash the cilantro, trim off the ends, put it in a small type jar filled with about 2-3 inches of water. You don’t want the water soaking the leaves. I leave the cilantro out until the leaves have dried. Take a plastic bag and place over the cilantro. Put the jar of cilantro with its little plastic greenhouse in the fridge. Mine stays fresh for up to three weeks. Sometimes only two. Just a thought.😍

🌶🧅🧅 I chopp fresh onions, and cut bell peppers into small pieces, or hot peppers too. I freeze them raw in a big sturdy freezer bag. If it clumps together, I let it thaw just a tiny bit and smash it on the kitchen counter. The frozen pieces separate and the bag goes back into the freezer. Any time I find these items in the reduced section, I do the same thing, adding to the same bag, or creating a second such bag. When empty, I rinse that freezer bag, and air dry it. Repeat. 🧄🧄 Garlic freezes beautifully too. None goes to waste. * Haven't tried mushrooms, but I heard they too can be frozen raw. I would slice them first though. * I will try to freeze sliced raw cabbage, for cooking with. Another time saver. 🍅🍅 I do as well freeze diced tomatos in small portions, as they surely clump together. Real handy in the winter. Nice thing to do when cleaning up the garden, or when finding price reduced bargains. I also use the green tomatos from my garden, either letting them get ripe indoors, or cooking with them. Or both. 🍌🍌Overripe bananas, in small ziploc bags, to make banana bread or pancakes with. Adding to my regular pancake recipe, plus cinnamon. 🍓🍓 Fresh strawberries for smoothies 🥭🥭 Fresh mango slices for smoothies 🍇🍇 Grapes, a nice cold snack.

I live alone, so I practically freeze a lot of stuff using silicone ice trays and freezer-safe plastic containers. Anything edible can be frozen, but then again, I'm not fussy about some loss of flavour or texture. So you might want to find out if that happens to certain food items if you're particular about it. My philosophy about cooking is why cook everyday when I can just cook today and eat for 5 to 7 days? Yes, you have to be quite easily satisfied to be able to eat the same thing for 5 to 7 days.

I put extra milk in a clean, sterile, plastic water bottle. It stays fresh in my fridge for about a month, or you can freeze it longer. The key is to us a clean, sterile bottle.I empty the water out of the bottle into a glass to drink. I don't put the milk into a bottle that I have put my lips on, otherwise the bacteria from my mouth makes the milk go bad in a few days.

Yes you can freeze milk but take it from a farmer...the ring is for expansion when it spoils . It's not a freezer friendly gimmick. 😕 It's so you notice it's bulging out and unsafe to eat due to increased bacteria creating gas.

I heard the plastic circle ⭕ on milk was to indicate when it has gone bad and puffs up the container.
@LauraLoele
@LauraLoele 3 жыл бұрын
Well, both explanations seem correct. When it turns bad, l assume gasses are formed and make the bottle puff up. In case of freezing the milk, the liquid expands when turning solid. So the bottle also puffs up .
@hazelvenom88
@hazelvenom88 3 жыл бұрын
I keep seeing that but I had a gallon that went sour just last month and that thing didn't pop up. I had to smell test. In fact I've had several gallons of sour milk in my life and I've never seen that thing popped. I assume it would have to be sour for a very long time. I think freezer expansion is the actual reason, but I'll have to try it and see.

Pastries usually freeze very well: donuts, cookies, pies, cakes, etc. I’ll even portion them out in bags first to make it a little harder to eat it all at once... Big cookies and donuts can be cut into more appropriate pieces before freezing. If they are already individually wrapped (as huge cookies often are), I just crack them into pieces before putting them in the freezer, no need to take them out of the original packaging. Chips obviously freeze well, but so does popcorn whether freshly popped or from a commercial prepopped bag. I will portion it out first in plastic bags and it lasts for ages. Junky cereal likewise. But just portioning out such things in individual zip bags also seems to keep them quite edible for ages as well, even out of the freezer.

Sure does. Always fresh and tasty. That where I keep it, makes it easy to grind and roll, don't even have to wait for it to thaw out.

You can freeze hard cheese but it looses quite a lot of its flavour and becomes crumbly, so harder to slice and grate.

Great stuff, but I thought the circle on the side of the milk gallon popped when it expired?

The circle is structural. Like beams hold up walls. The ring form keeps the sides upright and not droopy

I heard that when you thaw cheese to thaw it in the fridge to solve the crumble issue but...it doesn't work! so should I be thawing it at room temperature?

Room temperature and several hours. Cheese crumbles if not properly thawed.

Flatten the cookies, thaw in 5 min when they are thin. The same goes for mashed potatoes. Bake pancake with milk on short date. 1 QT=1.000 liters of water. Freeze the ready pancakes in pieces and use for your lunchbox.

Cream will not whip once its been frozen. Butter will not cream once frozen. You can use cream in cooking or to pour and butter to cook with but no creaming or whipping.

That’s interesting about the butter. I have been freezing butter for years and haven’t ever had a problem with it not creaming. I buy unsalted butter. Wonder why that is.
